Community Event / Creation August Exodus - The New World

Hello Commanders!

I'm writing on behalf of a group called the Twin Candles. Their leader has just been released from Imperial prison, and wishes to avoid speaking out in case the Shield of Justice are watching him.

galnet1.jpg

He wishes to make a plea to those explorers and pioneers joining the August Exodus.

The establishment of a colony around Jaques Station is being driven by players, and it’s up to us what sort of colony it will be. Why not create a society based on noble ideals?

The Twin Candles would like to see the new colony be a new political entity with its own principles, and a beacon of freedom and equality. As such they call on all pilots joining the August Exodus to take at least one ton (one family) of slaves with them for release at Jaques Station.

Their aim is that those who do so (and would like to) would join the Twin Candles, who hope to become one of the first (anti-slavery) player groups in the new colony.

Here is a word from the leader of the Twin Candles:

--------------------------------

Greetings Commanders

Some of you may not know me. My name is Etiene Denain.

I used to be a slave. I know only too well the humiliation of being robbed of your dignity, of your agency, of your personhood. I know only too keenly what it is like to be the property of others.

I am now an Imperial Citizen, although I hold the term in contempt - because what is Citizenship if it exists only to mark those apart who are not owned?

I now speak for an organisation called the Twin Candles. We have committed our lives to fighting the plague on mankind that is slavery. It is fundamentally inhumane for one human to ‘own’ another – and what is worse, the entire Empire culture is built on this inhumanity.

Our struggle has taught us that discourse will not achieve our goals. While those at the top of society benefit so much from slavery, and stand to lose so much from the slaves’ emancipation, nothing will change.

However, fellow Citizens, we’ve been presented with an incredible opportunity. The reappearance of Jaques Station and the efforts to establish a colony far from human space represent our chance build a new society - one founded on the principle of human dignity, not subjugation.

The August Exodus leaves the Ochooit system on August 15th. I call upon all pilots taking part to transport at least one family of slaves with them, to give those people a new start. Provide evidence here of your act of nobility and we will contact you for induction into the Twin Candles.

Let us give these men and women robbed of their dignity a new beginning! Together with them we can build a new society. Let the new colony be the first human civilisation to abolish the scourge of slavery for good.

Nobility through egality!

This is a golden opportunity to give this idea an interesting foundation from which future events, mysteries, folklore, and player created content can be built upon.

What do players want an outer colony for? The following are some of the things players and groups have campaigned for since the beta days;

  • Long distance courier and trade opportunities
  • Passenger missions
  • Tourism destinations, and associated missions
  • An independent entity to associate with, far from the political turmoil of the bubble

But as Souvarine has pointed out, others have grander ideas that can shape the colony and give it some distinct character, uniqueness, and humanize its existence beyond being just another place of mere missions, industry, and trade. It can be all of the above, and more.

The Twin Candles have the foresight to incorporate the new birth of this colony into a semi-roleplayed event from the outset. This event, seeking to be part of the growing August Exodus, can lead to far deeper stories that could shape how the new colony is perceived by the powers that be who are looking on from afar.

[roleplay]

Twin Candles have asked for volunteers from the August Exodus Convoy 2, set to depart on August 15th, to transport 1 tonne of slaves (approx. 12 souls) aboard their ships, and liberate them from their life of bondage out at Jaques. These freed slaves will symbolically become the first colonists.

The August Exodus subtitle caught their imagination;

"A new life awaits you in the off world colony - a chance to begin again in a golden land of adventure and opportunity."

[/roleplay]

Ok, so this is obviously a roleplayed event - a symbolic event to start off with, but with the physical transportation of these slaves taking part in game, and not in a GalNet article, and involving dozens if not hundreds of pilots, it could be a chapter in ED's unfolding history that is based out of player created content and player action. This could have far reaching effects in the long term and add credibility to what Twin Candles aim to achieve - a colony independent of the powers, built on freedom and liberty for all.. A new philosophy and way of life... And a militia of mercenaries stationed out there to defend it!

This is a chance for the players taking part in Exodus to help lay some foundations for future events. Whether FD see the potential, pick up the ball and run with it, no one knows. But let's at least give it a chance and see what happens. The potential is here - especially if pro-slavery imperial groups take an interest, as well as those opposed to such practices.

"Bubble 2.0" may end up being another urban sprawl with no deeper purpose behind it and little distinction from the one many of us are leaving behind, or it could lead to a new chapter in Elite lore, and this opportunity for convoy pilots to take part - whether you're explorers, miners, haulers, or adventures, can help write it.

Ditch a limpet, and take a slave [up]

Now that Denain is free, he is determined to help create the society he has spent most of his life fighting for. The Twin Candles will seek to form the first Colonia Militia, committed to defend the freedom of those who have been liberated there.

When you free your slaves at Jaques, take a screenshot and post it on to this thread. This is how we'll know who is part of the movement.

As there's no black market at Jaques you can 'free' them by discarding them while docked.

In time, the scope for the militia will grow - there will be a whole new society to build. The colony will need miners to find resources for the new society, soldiers to protect it, traders to enrich it and explorers to chart the region.

Heed the call Commanders! This is only the beginning!

***UPDATE - AUGUST 22ND***

Thanks to those who have already freed slaves at Jaques!

The Colonia Citizens Network is now live.

Because many of your forum names are different to your Discord names, could you please join the CCN server and send me (Souvarine) a Discord private message with a link to your post on this thread? That way we'll know who you are and we can assign your Militia role!

Thanks :D

Not sure I'll make the 15th, but even if I don't and I can find a slot for a cargo rack, I'll participate in spirit.

Just to clarify - the 'freeing' will be done by discarding them while docked! Turns out just jettisoning them to float around outside the station breathing their last is not so charitable.

Ok, so OP you have the concept of imperial slavery wrong. It drives me nuts when ever some one thinks that they are "freeing" someone who is contracted to indentured servitude.

Slavery is an "option" in the empire. Yes, it has been abused, but in general it gives citizens the opportunity to get out of debt.

I will be helping establish a station out in jaques, and a new culture, but the first move of that establishment should NOT be to slap a super power in the face. It should be above the petty squabbles of the bubble.

Edit, forgot to add /RP off

(Personally I don't want to see the slave story line come out to jaques, it should be a place of science and discovery not an extension of the politics of the bubble)

Hmm...
Sadly my build doesn't allow for a cargo rack... :(
Might have to sacrifice something, but this movement has my full support!

Hi Kled

You're spot on - slavery in the Empire is widely misunderstood. It could even be argued that it is the greatest social safety net that humanity has ever devised.

However, this is a roleplay event, and the character of Denain is a socialist. Players getting involved will have bought their slaves from somewhere and will be releasing them for free - so they will have paid off their debts for them.

I definitively approve this initiative. [Roleplay] As an old slave (I was born at Xuanduna), I'd like to be a part of this slavery freeing. Colonia Nebula is an ideal place to build a new kind of society based on cooperation, freedom and peace. Colonia Nebula is a place virgin of any superpower influence and a very unique opportunity to build a society ruled in another way than the old one did. [/Roleplay]. I suscribed to the August Exodus since the very start and suscribed to the convoy 2. I did a first trip to Colonia Nebula before the expedition started and scoot the route. I returned to the bubble for business and did a second trip to Colonia Nebula. Then, with a very small team, we started to list systems with barnacles planets candidates and we plan to extend this to the colonizable planets after my return to Colonia nebula (I guess at the end of this week). I did all I could to envolved the ED.FR community in this adventure and I'm pretty sure this community will want to be a part of that initiative. I'll informe them of its existence asap. I plan to return to the bubble with the convoy 2 and return to Colonia Nebula during the end of september. I hope crossing few of you when I'll be there again.

[Roleplay] Greetings from the Wolf Society. [/Roleplay]

Fair point and something I personally campaigned for a long time ago! :) But its down to the players to write their own story in regards to what the colony will be all about. Twin Candles (as far as I know) are the first (and possibly only) group to create a story around this turn of events and try to give the new colony a deeper meaning behind it than a simple continuation of what we have in the bubble.

From what I know Twin Candles want to encourage opposing viewpoints, they want to make the Colonia Nebula become a hot topic of intrigue and have the powers looking on with envious eyes as it grows independent and establishes its own colonial militia - they want to give it some 'character'. They don't want it to become a here today gone tomorrow novelty that soon gets forgotten once the CGs end.

It is easy to state what the colony should be used for, but to put it into practice takes time and effort - something Twin Candles have done and have worked on from the moment FD hinted a colony was a possibility. And they've embraced an on-going event (the August Exodus) and asked to use it as the vehicle to give their ideas some in game substance and player involvement - and not just posted a series of GalNet articles proclaiming this that and the other about Jaques and the colony. They're actively involved... in game.

Of course FD could just wave the magic wand and do whatever they like. They can ignore what players are trying to do and go down a completely different path and give you your science based outpost with no work from the players required. But MB did state in an earlier post that they are monitoring what players are actually doing with the Jaques story and looking at their in game actions regarding it. This is a great chance for players to write a chapter in Elite lore via in game actions. :)

/moved thread to community events

/mod hat off

@OP: do i understand correctly, that this event is connected virtually to establish a new minor faction at jaques system? will this not necesseraly a) bring conflicts at the new world? which goverment type is that new faction, so this doesn't lead to civil wars in the new world? b) lead to poor jaques being kicked off his station?

Is The Twin Candles a minor faction ?

Anyway, I totaly agree with you when you said that we realy dont need conflicts at Colonia Nebula. I think personnaly that is could be a place where differents minors factions could be very good neighbours in a cooperative way.
