Best game ever

Elite is longest time Ive stuck with a game, played it from day 1 & 9150hrs on the gameclock so far.

As for best ever? that's pretty subjective & depends on what genre of games you enjoy.

I watched the game industry from it's birth in the late 70's to where we are now & played some pretty good games, Space Invaders, Elite '84 & the series, DungeonMaster/Chaos Strikes Back, Command & Conquer series, Eye of the Beholder series, UFO series, Cannon Fodder, X series (not the crappy/buggy last one). These are just off the top of my head as they were released for us to enjoy.

I'd stopped buying games years before ED was launched, mainly because as games machines/PC's memory capabilities vastly improved so did the graphics....at a cost to gameplay, IMO.

I'd moved on to free online games of one genre or another, but mainly played Ogame (one server after another) much to the annoyance of my wife - Ogame is so structured that you have to plan your RL around the game or get blitzed!

Since I bought ED I played on it almost daily sometimes for 16 hours in a day.
I wouldn't say it's best ever......but it's up there with the best!

There are many many games that for me far surpase ED. In the pigion hole that ED sits, Frontiers Elite 2 takes the title.

Has somebody hacked your account? :p
Ha! I do run hot and cold on this game, I won't deny it. Depending on the subject under discussion I can come across as a white knight or a hater to those who are only reading one thread. I've been accused of both.

Like I said, one of my biggest issues is in how much the vision was oversold in the early days and it's something that can easily colour my opinions if I'm not careful: Persistent multi-tier NPCs going about their business in a galaxy whose economic and political situation would be in constant flux (not just once every Thursday). Dedicated career paths (trader, bounty hunter, pirate) with specific missions and mechanics to support them. A believable, internally consistent and sensible security/criminality system.

Even though most of what was discussed was doable in isolation, very few of those early wishlist items made it into the game in an immediately recognisable form, if at all. With hindsight it's easy to see what an insurmountable task it would have been to implement everything on that list even in a ten-year timescale, let alone for launch. I don't think even The Game Who Shall Not Be Named will be able to fully pull off that sort of autonomous virtual universe without some level of disappointment, despite the astonishing resources available to it. Time will tell.

In the meantime ED, which is basically Frontier for the 21st century and really ought to have been marketed as such, continues to delight and confound in equal measure. But as OP and others have pointed out, when you're concentrating on the annoyances it's easy to forget just how well most of it hangs together and what a convincing simulated galaxy it can present if you're in the right frame of mind to be receptive to it. I've not been shy when it comes to calling out David Braben on his naivety and lack of humility when he gets things wrong, but there's no denying he and the people he employs are astonishing world-builders. He may have aimed very high with ED and only achieved a fraction of that aim, but ED is still an amazing and almost peerless thing to behold. If you aim for the stars and only hit the moon, that's still impressive when almost everyone else is still crawling around in the mud.

The legacy Elite games were always significantly ahead of the competition, in many cases because they were so cutting edge that there was no competition. For me ED, despite its many flaws and shortcomings, maintains that tradition with ease. And yesterdays' live stream demonstration of what's coming next week bodes very well for the next 12-18 months IMO. FD seem to be concentrating on making the players' experience of what's already in the game more intuitive and engaging, rather than shovelling new features in. It's something the game has arguably needed for some time, so my confidence pendulum is definitely swinging in the right direction at the moment.

Best game ever? A few hours ago, I was in the mood to say yes. Now, meh, not so much. Maybe tomorrow I will change my mind!
And there it is in a nutshell! Something doesn't have to be perfect or flawless to be the best. It just has to be better than anything else on offer. At the right time, doing the right in-game things and in the right frame of mind, I would have no hesitation in calling ED the best game I've ever played. Other times, especially when it's acting up, it's "merely" a flawed masterpiece.

I don't consider Elite Dangerous to be the best game ever, that belongs to another game. But this is a game I enjoy and is my most played game ever.

Out of curiosity, as it is not clear in the mission pic, how many samples did you have to retrieve?

Nailed it! I abandoned it, so I went into ESDM and checked and it was 3. My guess is one of them must have gotten destroyed, as that has happened in the past.

Okay, I am back to loving ED now!

EDIT- should have added that I had 4 of these missions stacked at the time. Really was not paying attention to the quantity, as I just dropped in to each USS, deployed the collector limpet to start collecting and then checked the contacts tab to make sure everything is collected before moving on.

I will agree that this is the best game in its genre IMO. Because of the bugs, I've tried to replace it with other games like NMS, but nothing "scratches the itch" like ED.

But for me, there are different kinds of "itches", so I can't say it's the best of ALL video games. ED is definitely not the best PvP game for me. Right now that title goes to Overwatch. Is ED better than Skyrim or Dragon's Dogma? Only if the singular itch you have is to fly a spaceship. I've never played The Witcher series (a bit too dark for my tastes), but I suspect it has won more GOTY awards than ED. Are you interested in a game with a compelling story? That definitely isn't ED! But that's okay. ED doesn't have to be the best game ever, as being the best game in a genre is an achievement all its own.

The shadows still suck, and the game is definitely the BUGGIEST GAME EVER (in my collection) :p

EVER!

Change my mind. you can’t.

Today’s livestream restored my faith in FDev. Elite Dangerous is (IMO) the best game ever made. I can’t wait to see what 2020 brings.

I hope its servers stay online as long as the Guardian terminals.

I only started playing in May 2018 and I can’t get enough. I have about 600 or 700 hours in game, I’m double (nearly triple) elite, and I still feel as though there’s not enough hours in the day to do all the things I want to do in Elite.

Elite is GREAT. FDev are GREAT. And this community is THE BEST.

Who’s with me??

You need to get out more. You must spend close to 20 hours a week playing a video game. It's not healthy.

What a strange thing to post to this of all threads. Odd maths aside -- even using the shortest calendar time and the longest playing hours I make it closer to an average of 2.2 hours per day, which is not excessive if it's all you do with your leisure time -- you're making assumptions about the OP's mobility and health, before telling them it's not healthy? Wow.

Addendum: just checked your history. You could have just said that you don't agree.

In fairness for my part I sometimes watch Netflix while playing too, I think that's quite demanding on my facalties. As such I don't think it's reasonable to claim playing a video game is unhealthy.

Staying awake getting to Hutton Orbital is a genuine challenge to anyone's concentration levels if you ask me...

Most of us at some point in our lives look up at the stars or the moon and have an itch to travel there. Most of will never do that. ED scratches that itch. The flight model may not be that realistic but it feels okay. I am very happy with it and in terms of hours sunk into it, it is hands down my most played game ever. It's a flawed jewel though, The whole structure around galaxy control between players, factions, powers, squadrons and powerplay is a complete illogical mess against the back drop of the BGS. I actually think the BGS is a great concept, but to work it needs a logical structure of the elements that fit around it. Someone needs to look at this as a whole and turn it into a logical structure. I think if that happened it would be a lot better game, because there would be some coherent multiplayer. Thargoids should be a power and a faction as they take over stations that should be reflected in the BGS.

I play maybe an hour or two a day on average. Not actually sure what my total time in game is. I had

Thanks for your concern but it’s all good over here. And I just guessed at my total time. I had around 300 hours in November when I checked last.

Elite is Brilliant. Fallout 4 gave me nightmares. I just love exploring the galaxy. I don't need to go to the bad parts but some missions are interdicted interdiced, pls
when its jsut scaning missions or recoving salvage.
