Sorry, but I disagree. We are entitled to demand (with some limitation) because we paid for a product, this is by no means a charity, I refuse to believe frontier is doing this because they are such a good people that they wanted to give us a game without making any profit.

I do think their approach has been good to us the backers so far, but I don't understand why people see backing a game as charity.

I didn't pay for a product, I pledged towards a kickstarter. YMMV.

But it takes time to write the game you know. This isn't a finished game early access deal, they're actively implementing huge swathes of functionality which hitherto didn't exist.

If you can't handle that, wait for release. Meantime, enjoy the Beta, as that's what you paid for and currently you have it available to play, so less QQ.

I agree with Slopey to a point. We paid for the privilege of access to the product before its finished with all its pluses and minuses. This is not charity, as we will receive a final product when released. This is paying for goods before receiving the final product and this method has been going on since the dawn of time.

Given that this is not a finished product, it is incredible what is presented at the moment. The company is taking a risk in the PR department, but if handled correctly, and so far it seems it is, managing a product rollout this way has many benefits.

I say enjoy what we have, and look forward for more.

I paid for Alpha... really didn't know what i was doing - it was a mad thing to do in retrospect as i haven't the time to test this game like sooo many other people, plus I don't get the 'lore' the 'story' or 'in jokes' relating to Elite.

Initially it was quite exciting to be part of a ED's development but now I just load up the latest release play badly a while, read the threads for instructions but then eventually get put off the game by the forum.

I can't wait for the next wipe (release) in the hope that all the problems ticketed by the 'alturistic' gamers out there get ironed out.

I have never considered myself an 'investor' in this project; in a similar way to which, I do not expect any return when I give money to a charity for example.

We are not entitled to demand anything from Frontier, they are doing us a great service by working hard to deliver the game we have wanted for a long time.

I have to say, I see this completely differently.

FD isn't a charity, its a business, and yes, as paid up investors, we have a right to expect them to deliver on what they've said. They are not doing this out of the goodness of their hearts, and while I accept it may also be a labour of love, it would not be happening at all if it didn't stand up to the harsh realities of business.

That's how I see it.

I think what we'd agree on though, is that we trust them to deliver, and we hold them in very high regard.

Well put.

The paid for alpha/beta is a newly evolving and seemingly lucrative business model in the games world, it's not a privilege bestowed on us mere mortals by the stripey jumpered one.

The moment they started to sell Alpha access after the kickstarter finished they were bound by consumer laws to deliver, and woe betide them if they dont.

Exactly how does pledging for a kickstarter, or buying a product, make you an investor?

By all means go and by some FDEV shares on iii, but until then, you're not invested in anything.

The moment they started to sell Alpha access after the kickstarter finished they were bound by consumer laws to deliver, and woe betide them if they dont.

And less of the armchair lawyer nonsense - they have delivered Alpha and Beta, just like they said they would. Which particular part of the statute would you like to invoke over correctly receiving what you've paid for?

And less of the armchair lawyer nonsense -

A part of what they sold as Alpha/beta was access to the finished game. they still have to deliver that.

whether what i say is nonsense or not is simply your opinion,
maybe your opinion is nonsense

They'll release a finished game. Do you really think they won't?

Paying for a beta is supporting a game's development. You can choose to see it as Frontier taking advantage of our bias towards the product. My bias makes me happy to have supported this project.

I could easily say that right now I'm not satisfied with it, that there are many things lacking, a lot of bugs, etc. But knowing it's not a final product make these kinds of complaints absurd. As of today, it's still a wonderful and promising game.

Also I think watching something like ED grow in front of our eyes, almost powerless about how it's going to evolve, is treacherous. The game delivered a lot already, yet we get accustomed to it very quickly, just like how you might get accustomed to being rich and want more. Just like the first Elite, and its sequel Frontier, it excites our imagination and makes us wish for even more than we have. It will always be like this.

Elite's, Frontier's and ED's shortcomings are mostly what it enabled us to expect next.

I think people who have played the beta have mostly enjoyed the game and are very eager to have more. That's why they rattle. Rather, it is ultimately positive. If the game was bad they'd already moved on.

disagree with everything you said. I am disappointed so far, crossing my fingers the current state is just extremely raw and haven't moved on because I spent $75. Haven't enjoyed any of it really and I'm dying for a good space sim

I get that people are a little disappointed with Beta 1, its certainly a very bare bones game and once you get past a hauler you tend to have more credits than you need and the game feels a bit goalless.
Enough people have pushed the we are testing angle so i wan't reiterate whats been said many time before.
I will however point out that development isn't dead during this phase, With both the island size increase and live economy now running that's just 2 'updates' to the game made without issuing a new client.
We are all frustrated with the bugs that are still in place but the act of still continuing to play gives them valuable server data on how the game is running and the more people that take part the more of a 'stress test' is applied.

Define "good space sim".
