Bit cheeky and I've not googled it /yet/ but I thought I'd speak to you folks first...

I have a Windows partition (only used for Starfield and ED) but Linux is my main stay. I have steam installed on Linux and can play non-Windows-based games, does anyone have any experience with this, specifically 'merging' content for libraries between the two OSs? SF and ED both have gold ratings on proton DB.

Basically, I want to try and run Proton on Linux to run Starfield and/or ED (although I'm more interested in SF since I hardly ever play ED anymore); if it seems amenable then I will need to copy my save-game data from my Windows NTFS partition into my Linux ext4 steam library folder so I can trash to Windows partition and use it for other purposes.

Optionally I could keep the Windows partition and point the Linux steam game for SF/ED at the files on the NTFS partition and not have to boot into Windows for a long time if ever again. The idea being that I'd point it to my 'character' on the Windows partition.

Oh, caveat WRT ED is that I only currently have the FD installation of ED so am guessing I might need to obtain a steam key for ED, but it's not really a major concern since I have only played ED twice in the last 2 years. So not much of a caveat really.

Using an NVidia 4070, 64GB memory, 13th Gen Intel i9-13900H (20) @ 5.200GHz. Ubuntu 24.04

Thanks in advance!

Answering my own question - was easy(ish), just needed to updated SF on both platforms, make sure the cloud was synced and then enable proton for SF. Still doesn't work but I've not really tried to tweak it yet...

2x2 Trident Vehicle Hangar, available via Creations.
Does not open. Module must be placed one level above the landing bay. Module has also all Workbenches.

I hope to get back into the game next month. I'm probably radically cutting out mods. I'm mainly keeping the various shipbuilding mods. Those have progressed so much, I'm really motivated to rebuild some ships. My cruiser will be back, but somewhat changed, inside and outside. It already exists in my head, I just need to build it.

I'm not playing much at the moment, no spare time, however when I do I find a really annoying thing-my character view keeps jumping out of first person into third person as he's running around. Is there a way to switch this off? It didn't happen with the early version of the game, I suspect it's appeared with the recent update but I can't see any relevant control setting option.

I'm hoping that the DLC gives this game playability, I haven't played for any great time in a couple of months, I log on to see what mods are new and that's about it as I haven't seen many fixes for months, I still haven't managed to complete the ECS missions ( even after NG10 ).

I'm going full cheat mode on the new playthrough. I did the proper slog to level 250 until Bethesda broke the mods (and my save) with the patch that introduced empty habs. On restart I'm going with increased XP and 5 skillpoints per level, no skill challenges.

Not sure they've quite bought in to the concept of space games yet :D
Of course they have...
  1. You arrive there in your spaceship
  2. You can return to your spaceship
  3. It is on a planet you have to fly to
  4. The game is "Skyrim in space" after all...
I won't be buying any DLC for the game, it has proven to be only slightly more engaging than NMS for me.

New Update available in Beta. And - wow! - the recently „out-patched“ glitch-building now becomes a feature. That is great and shows that Bethesda listens to the community.

  • Ship Builder: A new option has been added to the game settings to allow for toggling Flip Merge behavior use

It's incredible how happiness is generated by the demonstration that if they listen to the community... I'm just waiting for someone to improve space exploration and boarding planets and remove the hateful loading screens.

I am still considering whether to get back into SF after Shattered Space is released... I should get it for free from my Constellation edition thing, but I dunno. I mean I finished the game once - I actually enjoyed it a lot, I even made a few mods for it myself but then just lost interest somehow and I don't feel the itch to come back.

Even though I've not done it all, only did the main story and 1 city/planet side missions, didn't really do that much exploration etc. I just don't feel that spark that would make me go "Oooh let's try Starfield again, maybe with a different character now!".

I might give it even more time and wait for more DLC's so it's more complete experience, especially that I have a gazillion of other single player games to play :)

I actually wonder if my mods still work after all the updates... I've not even checked :D

That would be a complete rewrite/remaster. That will never happen. Or are you willing to pay full price again for Starfield enhanced ? Or even more, since probably fewer people would buy it than the original, and costs need to be covered. The game is largely what it is, the core structure won't change.

An interesting comment, and likely incredibly accurate!

Yet this here forum have members demanding similar changes to ED and expecting it to happen for free...

Gamers are curious folk...

It's more possible (but unlikely) to happen for Starfield than for ED. Bethesda have deeper pockets than FDEV for delivering improvements up front before charging for stuff again. And there's Microsoft behind them as well. It would require good confidence within MS and Bethesda though that they could pull it off in a way that brings the game up to a reputation level to make profit from further expansions again.

Considerably deeper, it is a fact.
And your points:

Illustrate beautifully the need for revenue in games development, even with studios with massive revenue streams!

Doesn't negate my comment, on here, with ED, some want everything for nothing...

ETA: The irony of the first post here suggesting it was one to watch for the PS5 is not lost on me, nor the numerous comments that Starfield was going to be an ED killer... As anyone might notice, it didn't appear on PS5, and it didn't kill ED, yet few believed it would just be another Skyrim, only with spaceships, at least until it released...

I don't think anything will ever change in terms of space exploration. Before the release, it was indeed given the impression that this would be a part of the game, but I didn't expect anything close to ED to come out of it. It is disappointing, however, that space exploration is practically non-existent, apart from scanning planets, which later also works from other systems far away.

As far as the loading screens are concerned, ‘hiding’ them is conceivable at best, so that there is more of an impression of a smooth transition to the next setting. There is already a mod for grav jumps that really makes it better.

Something is also in development for the repetitive POIs (from modders and from Bethesda), and that would be a big step.

Now bring the space battles to a higher level, introduce some kind of economic simulation to make trading fun - and the game would be near-perfect for me: A shooter with base and ship building - these three parts a very good - and some space-simulation, that's a totally satisfying mix. Does it achieve the magic of Elite? No. But it's absolutely ok.

Perhaps I'm more of a "glass half full" kinda guy, but I've really enjoyed Starfield. I've racked up 750 hours in it and had a very fun and memorable experience so far. I definitely got my money's worth.

So I'm certainly looking forward to the Shattered Space expansion. More stuff to do, more places to explore, more stories, more loot...sounds like a plan to me. I'm sure I will have a great September this year :p

No game is perfect. Every single one of my favorite games has stuff that I hate (or dislike). But the great games are still great, and their flaws are just part of the whole.

As long as I'm alive, I'm gonna be playing games. :)
