Game Discussions Bethesda Softworks Starfield Space RPG

Ooooooohhhhhhh..... Very interesting.. Well that would remove one of the major issues I've had with the game up to this point, which I guess in hindsight was FUD. That definitely makes me want to just grab this on Steam when the day comes, if for no other reason than the ease and convenience. Not that I love Steam, but I love Microsoft even less!

Can confirm, no Microsoft account needed at all, or any other account besides Steam.

It’s really a great game. Ship interiors are NOT boring, not when there’s things to do in it, it’s incredibly immersive. Even if the space flight is not that great, it’s great to be able to dock with ships and stations and board them.

Majority of the game is definitely on foot but there’s a lot to do and explore, and customize.

Ha! Collecting so many must have taken time. But you know what they say: Cactus makes perfect.

Yeah but, the game engine isn't a space sim game engine. SC have failed in making a playable game mainly because the game engine they are trying to use wasn't a space sim engine to start with the the massive amount of customising they have done to it hasn't really helped that much. It's quite possible that the game engine Bethesda are using simply won't be able to do what you want it to do, and why should it? They aren't making a space sim, and any desire for a space sim by players can be amply fulfilled simply by playing one of the games that is a space sim, or at least has pretensions to being a space sim anyway.

I would almost guarantee you won't have fully rendered planets in SF like NMS and ED, that's not a simple thing to do,and if you don't start out with the right engine, well you aren't going to get there. The same with fully realised and rendered solar systems with realistic flight models and physics, if you don't start out with the right engine you aren't going to get there. It is what it is, an RPG set on different planets with fast travel between them.
Those are all good points! My gripe is not that I was expecting a space sim, just that I think BGS makes space feel too small. Whenever I jump, be it from a star to a star or from planet to planet, I feel like I didn't cross a vast distance but that I jumped from puddle to puddle. It feels claustrophobic to me. Like I wrote, I wasn't looking for the long trips of Elite; in fact, I think BGS was smart to avoid such a thing as it would just hurt the gameplay momentum. But I was hoping for something less narrow in scope. I always feel like I am wearing blinders when I complete a jump; like the game just wants me to focus straight ahead and react to any proc-gen content occurring in front of my ship, which is probably the intention of the design, to be fair. I guess I was hoping for something more like Everspace 1. In that game, when you complete a jump, the game proc-gens an instance that is limited in scope but big enough to create a sense of scale and to encourage the player to scout around and go exploring for a bit. The instances in SF feel like they are only a tenth as big as what is in Everspace, and I think that hurts the game by shrinking space down to a much too narrow venue. I also think it might hinder my interactions with my ship. One of my favorite things to do in X4 is to hand controls over to my crew and take a seat on the bridge, where I can plan my next mission or trade run or just get a look at what's going on in the gameworld. While doing this, I can see my pilot navigating from sector to sector, something that adds a sense of scale to the game (X4's sectors aren't massive by any means, either). I wish I could do this in SF. I wish travel times were just long enough to be able to get up from the bridge and talk to the crew, do some crafting, etc., all the while being able to look out of the canopy and see the ship traveling through space (even if it was just some sort of abstracted view).

Having said that, I do NOT think space travel in SF is by any means a dud. I think BGS's use of instancing was a very clever solution to making space travel fun, unpredictable, and not a time burning chore like in Elite. I just wish it took a bit more time to go from point A to point B, even if it was optional. In other words, make the current system a type of fast travel (perhaps a skill-based unlock or purchasable ship component?) but also give the player the option to use a slower supercruise (if I might borrow a term) where it would take a handful of minutes to make the transit, thereby giving the player time to putz around his ship. I think this is the type of compromise that would make space feel like more of a place. These are just rough ideas for making space feel bigger. I'm sure there are better ideas out there. I just feel a type of wordless groan about SF's space travel. It is functional and fine, but it feels like there should be just a bit more to it.

That's exactly what I like so much about Starfield, almost every mission no matter how small has a mini story or some cool dialog.
Random events are plenty and you really don't know what you're going to run into when you jump to another system or land on a so it seemed empty planet.
Many people complain about the loading screens being immersion breaking, it doesn't bother me, the multitude of stories and interesting things to do and see more then make up for it.

I agree! SF manages to create so much life in its star cluster. It feels real and lived-in because of the NPC interactions and the many places you can find and explore, along with random events.

As for the loading screens...I really don't know what people are complaining about. Maybe it is because I am running the game on my NVMe, but I find the loading screens to be fast (5–10 seconds on average) and hardly uncommonly frequent. I explored a manufacturing facility a few days ago that consisted of about four small buildings and one large facility. None of the smaller buildings had a loading screen. Only the large one did when I entered, and I think when I moved from one level to another. So, maybe two altogether (plus another when leaving the building). I don't see that being any worse than any other Bethesda RPG, be it Skyrim or Fallout.

At least donuts are cheap! :p

Psst! You can play Starfield for just $10 on Gamepass. ;)😈

If it does require a Microsoft account to play, does that mean it needs an Internet connection to authenticate every time you launch it? As stupid as this sounds, it's exactly how Red Dead Redemption 2 works, and it annoys me beyond measure.
I’m playing the Microsoft Store version of the game through Gamepass - when the game launches there is a “sync” attempt which has failed on a couple of occasions and immediately offered me the option to play Offline. This (I believe) is due to the game having cross-saves on PC & Xbox because the next time I flash the game up it asks me which save I want to use, Local or Online.

I’ve been really impressed with the Microsoft store - it feels like I’ve bought the game off GoG and I never have to see the launcher or be pestered with fluff, I just launch SF from its icon and I’m in-game within moments 😁 If Xbox stuff is running in the background then it is very unobtrusive.

wow well they really got that "traveling without moving" thing all wrapped up pretty well now don't they...….advanced spaceman game linked watch or no I think ill fold b4 I buy in ;)

Anyone here running on an NVidia 4070? I'd like to know if you're running on Maximum settings or not.

Post edit: forgot to say, it's the mobile/laptop 4070 - 8Gb DDR6

OK I found a video on Youtube with a laptop playing SF on a 1070. Looks like it will be fine!

POS POST EDIT: last line (above) should have read:

Last night I spotted a Terrormorph that had level 45. I wonder if that is the most dangerous animal in Starfield? I don't have a screenshot of it, because I understood I need to turn back immediately. I was able to walk away without it spotting me. 😮‍💨

Also: Has anyone had this running on Linux yet?
Somebody in another thread mentioned SF running better in the Switch than their PC, which implies that not only does it run on Linux, but it runs better on Linux. That's NOT what I was expecting. I'm surprised that it runs on Linux at all, though I guess if Skyrim runs on Linux (and PS3 and a slide rule), then so might other games based on the same engine.

All that said, I'd like more confirmation regarding this. If SF does run on Linux (I'm thinking Proton via Steam), that's yet another check mark in the pro column for me!

Really liking the UC Vanguard story.

I like how it so easy to get side track from main story and get lost in an exciting new one.
Think i'll do one Faction story pr. each NG+, to keep things going after main story ends.

It will be on the top of my list of things to try; it'll save me having to boot into Windows which is a PITA because all of a sudden I'm with an unfamiliar OS that will be pretty bare-bones. I'll post here if I have any success (and be sure to @ you!).

OK, last question (honest!)

Did anyone go through the Windows install-but-bypass-MS-account creation? I think it was previously posted here to use the link (top one when searching using Google) to Tom's hardware.

If so which method did you go? Standard USB install with bypass during installation or by creating a USB installer using Rufus to bypass account creation?

I was level 4 when one jumped me and I died horribly. Now I poop myself when I hear scrabbling noises 🤣

Question for any ship designer pros on the max power of a module. What does max power mean exactly? I know what it literally means, but consider this scenario:

Two shield generators have exactly the same stats but one has a max power of 4 and another has a max power of 5.

As far as I know the stats on a module shown in game are the stats with full power allocated to the module. Would the max power 4 module in the scenario above actually be better than the max power 5 module since it only takes 4 pips to achieve the full potential instead of 5 pips?

The game seems to consider a higher max power module an upgrade over a lower max power module if their stats are the same but if it requires less pips to achieve that I would think that would be better?

So when they say the creation kit is coming next year, is that early or late next year? Having been utterly spoiled by some of the Skyrim mods (especially anything from Bijin), I'm really looking forward to what modders can do once they have a full toolkit!

Oh, speaking of Skyrim, at least Skyrim had horses to speed up travel time. Does Starfield have any hover bikes or SRVs or anything comparable to a horse in Skyrim, or is it ALL on-foot travel? (Spaceship fast-travel being more akin to travel wagons in Skyrim)

They (BSG) said (can't find the link now) that jet packs are the equivalent of a vehicle.

Base game there are no terrestrial vehicles - wait for Creation Engine to come out perhaps?

I’d say the ships replace both the horse and the wagons since it’s much more involved than the wagons. Individual zones you find yourself in are themselves much smaller than the map of Skyrim so you can’t compare the walking time around them to waking around the entire Skyrim map.

You also have a jet pack which can be upgraded and you can get around really fast with it.

There are no vehicles at the moment but you do see them around in the game, including mechs. I can see vehicles being added as a DLC and/or eventually with mods.
