Game Discussions Bethesda Softworks Starfield Space RPG

Took almost 30 hours for YouTube to finish the HDR encode of this two minute video (needs a Chromium based browser and HDR display to view in HDR):

HDR isn't finished on this video yet, but YouTube's SDR tone-mapping is tolerable enough for space scenes:

I've been trying to build a decent ship that has everything but remains on a single level besides the entrance ramp since I hate repeatedly falling down through ladder ways as I make my way through the ship...harder than it would appear since 400 foot wide ships don't really work that well with all the confusing doorways and interconnecting halls

Best I could come up with so far was an unimaginative dual level rebuild of an existing ship...it's very long though. The side entryway leads ladderless into the lower level which is all workshops and crew quarters, the top deck via a single ladder in the engineering section behind the door from the main entryway is all control spaces leading into the cockpit.

My crew of six still suffers with the default layout of the Hopetech Watchdog (which ships like the Crimson Fleet Ghost are built from). No bunks, no toilets (the threat that bucket everyone uses will pose if the ship ever loses gravity is one of the reasons my character never takes off the pressure suit), random clutter blocking the one path to the cockpit on the third level...but it works.

I don't like complex internal layouts...have stolen enough giant ships at this point that I'm sick of spending ten minutes finding the bridges on these things.

Regarding the repetitive surface installations; I can take a sweep around from the landing site and know the internal layout of a building, what enemies will be present, where they patrol, what's on the terminals, etc.
How often do you have to go through an abandoned bio lab to figure out you're facing pirates, which room they're in, almost which table they're hiding behind?
As for cool gear, no suit or helmet have surpassed the ones I got from the Mantis' Lair (and it I'm not talking about the costume on the mannequin).

Here's my latest ship, on my latest character. I'm starting to understand building ships a bit better. It's actually pretty cool. I like how it works.

It took me forever to realize that some module types (like HABs) have multiple variations that you get to by using the left and right arrow keys. I was only seeing the first variation, and not the rest!

This is a class B ship, the most I can make at this point on this character. It's been quite effective in combat, and it has all the amenities (workshops and beds and whatnot).

There's more to be done, but it's coming along nicely.

I found a place where I can pretty reliably find a steal-able ship each time I land there. Some are just locked with no-one guarding, others have pirates or such in them. The pirate ones also usually have contraband inside. I've been making a fair amount of credits from stealing and selling ships, along with whatever contraband I find. It's reasonably fun, too. Now that I have the hang of it, it's not even that dangerous. :)
Stealing ships has become my favourite activity! Whenever I see a ship land somewhere, I immediately drop what I am doing and head there. Sometimes multiple ships land in sequence (I mean not at starports) and I try to note where each one is.

Why?

Because 🤷‍♂️

Finding a supplier for the mats you need is pretty much legit RPG game, no cheating at all. I mean you get mission orders to deliver bulk amounts of ressources to the staryards.

btw, "Staryards" - anyone know whether Neon has a ship outfitter? I couldn't find the technician at the presumed office on the landing pad.
And Neon is a fricken fishing port - how cool is that!
I enjoy the fact there's multiple options to procure your "engineering mats".

It does, although you have to unlock the skill, and it's rather awkward to use. Some folks might find it useful or fun, but to me it seems rather useless. Then again I'm not a fantastic pilot, especially using the mouse to steer, so maybe it's me :)
I found it to be very useful in doing the equivalent of a fa off flip to stay on the six of baddies and avoiding fire. I would say level 1 thruster and targeting skills are mandatory for ship combat. Really opened it up for me when I was a tad disapointed at first. Also helping me stay in my class A Frontier which I have only upgraded components and kept exactly the same.

Seems class A have the highest speed and manuverability so I'm still staying competitive if just barely in 3v1 brawls.

Currently saving up to do my own custom ship soon. I'm at 200k but want to hit 300 before I start.

Your apartment looks very cool. How much did it cost and where do they sell them? And how did you get those workbenches, mission boards, crates etc, which you cannot pick up to your personal inventory? And how do you put objects that topple easily, upright on tables and shelves? I cannot turn an object upright when I'm carrying it, and so when I drop it on a table or a shelf, it topples.

The penthouse apartment is a reward for finishing a questline
UC Vanguard, the storyline that beginns with delivering Comms equipment to a colony. It's the Terrormorph storyline

As for the objects: I only learnt that myself the day I build the apartment  When you drop an item from your Misc tab in the inventory (like a cup), you can pick it up while holding "e". When it floats in front of you, you can press left mouse button or right mouse button to rotate the item you are "holding". With "left shift" on your keyboard you can change the rotation axis (X, Y, Z).

Thanks, but having played other Bethesda games I was just expecting there to be an actual date as well, especially since the intro specifies one and there are times missions and weekly costs, just seems a bit weird that you (seemingly) never have any idea of what day or date it is.
I’ve never taken a timed mission until today, so I tried one out to see out what they are like. If you bring up the mission text it shows you how much time you have left:

I can’t comment on the weekly costs thing, but maybe it’s something similar 👍

Thank you! I’ve been going mad trying to put my (now) three books onto my bookshelf the right way!

I suppose that’s the case in Fallout 4 as well. Nearly a thousand hours in that game, and never once figured that out…

Probably even as old as Skyrim  and yes, that's exactly how I felt. I mean, I COULD have just used google a "few" years earlier...

Wanted to share some random helpful tips I picked up.

Even though this don't make sense, it actually works bear with me. Binding a second jump key (Ex: Lalt) will enable you to use a much more powerful forward boost with your jet pack. Jump with space, hold forward and the press lalt will actually propel you forward much more powerfully and not seem to split the thrust between up and forward.

I think within 250m of your ship if you go to ship inventory screen from main menu (Tab) and pressing cargo will let you shift items between you and ship cargo without being in it.

You can manually equip followers with weapons outfits and armor on their inventory screens (Mentioned previously).

Fast traveling from ships pilot chair will show animation and when fast traveling from outside ship will arrive you already outside ship (If I'm remembering correctly). Good to help keep some immersion if you want the cutscenes.

Learning 1st level of stealth unlocks stealth meter. 1st level of thrusters unlocks the ability to hold down a key to cut thrust except to the directional key you press after. 1st level of targeting unlocks a manual ship targeting mode for subsystems that slows down time and gives you a vats esq experience. Useful even just for slowing down combat and focusing in not just for targeting subsystems. You need 1st level of Boosterpacks to unlock the function (I didn't realize this for first 12 hours).

Supposedly from what I read the game has a form of auto cover where you'll aim out or lean around certain covers when aiming. Only works in first person. I've only read about this tonight.

That's what I got off the top of my head at work.

Because it feels quite silly, I would even say almost inappropriate, when my game character is supposed to be a serious space explorer, that uses technology to solve problems, becomes a magician as the game progresses. And the fact that he is the only character that does magic, makes it more unsuitable to the game.
The only power I used in my playthrough was the one that gives you full oxygen so I could run further, I collected a few others but never even tried them. I don't want to be a magician either

Some early/mid game story thoughts.
One thing I really noticed after having collected a few powers, is how much it makes the game feel like Rage 2. Which of course is a game made by id Software, who were brought by Bethesda. I really enjoyed Rage 2 for what it was.
But did they need to be put into Starfield..? I don't know it just feels weird at the moment and very out of place. I have stumbled across a few of them now while out exploring, and have discovered one which is Personal Atmosphere which is so ridiculously OP it's crazy. It basically gives you 15 seconds of Oxygen and eliminates all CO2. So no matter how encumbered you are you can sprint, and just before you start taking damage from CO2 poisoning, use the power, then carry on sprinting. By the time the power has run out and your CO2 is about to cause you damage again, you have enough power to use it again.
Permasprint unlocked.

Yes, multiple. I can think of 5 off the top of my head, and I spend a lot of time exploring.
I am at around 120 hours doing my first playthrough. My thoughts about the powers (yes, spoilers ahead):

I'm halfway down the main quest, so I don't really know where it will be going, but I have collected four? powers now. My first thought was: Oh no, what is it with putting magic into every game? But I've thought about it a bit, and I'm a little more cool with it. In some conversation there was the mention of aliens, time travelers, or wherever the story will go; the history SciFi stories and movies is full of alien encounters where either the aliens have supernatural powers, or the protagonist gains them in one way or another. For now I've decided to be cool with that; also, I reminded myself that this isn't hard SciFi with emphasis on the Sci, but maybe more in the tradition of space fantasy matinee serials. Much less silly and pulp than, say, The Outer Worlds, but I can live with that. Heck, Star Wars has "magic" too.

Also, two of the powers are so useful. Personal atmosphere is a life saver when I have to haul all the resources to the lodge to research or craft (no, I don't really have a suitable outpost yet, and the lodge at least has infinite storage), and the one showing you all the perps around you is great for stealthing.

I still haven't invested any skill point into stealth. Highly unusual for me. Tied up some questlines and finished the UC faction quest. That was a very decent questline. Advanced the main story a bit - it came to some kind of climax. Not sure how far I am actually. So far I have 3 powers unlocked. Stripped my Hoplite of faff and exchanged some habs. Now it's quite decent. Due to mentions here of ship renaming I planned to rename the ship but couldn't find the option when I looked for it.
Credit balance has recovered and the outpost links are in place. Holy cow, cargo containers fill up quickly. Is there sorting available down the tech tree?

Peculiar thing about the main quest: There is a character you can meet at the bar at the entrance of New Atlantis at the start of the game. I forgot about him but

after yesterday's main quest episode I met a "hunter" and was wondering if they might be the same kind? Would give the whole thing a form of Gaunter O'Dimm touch from TW3.

Ah yes, him. Don't worry, you'll get used to him eventually. :giggle:

I met him twice so far, once in New Atlantis and then again at the bar in Akila City. I have the feeling he will make a return at some point in the main story.
