Game Discussions Bethesda Softworks Starfield Space RPG

Of course they have...
  1. You arrive there in your spaceship
  2. You can return to your spaceship
  3. It is on a planet you have to fly to
  4. The game is "Skyrim in space" after all...
I won't be buying any DLC for the game, it has proven to be only slightly more engaging than NMS for me.
I've sunk many hours into NMS and have nearly completed the story (such as it is) and find it an enjoyable escape. Ditto Skyrim and Kingdom Come Deliverance, and they all pull me back in now and again.

Starfield for me somehow feels a lot less than the sum of its parts, and the 'story' feels half-baked somehow. I'd have much preferred chasing down a real alien culture and tech, and this might have made the door-opening-loadingscreen-simulator more compelling for me.

As things stand I gave up quite quickly and feel zero pull to return the endless cookie-cutter mini-games and bases. YMMV

I don't think anything will ever change in terms of space exploration. Before the release, it was indeed given the impression that this would be a part of the game, but I didn't expect anything close to ED to come out of it. It is disappointing, however, that space exploration is practically non-existent, apart from scanning planets, which later also works from other systems far away.

As far as the loading screens are concerned, ‘hiding’ them is conceivable at best, so that there is more of an impression of a smooth transition to the next setting. There is already a mod for grav jumps that really makes it better.

Something is also in development for the repetitive POIs (from modders and from Bethesda), and that would be a big step.

Now bring the space battles to a higher level, introduce some kind of economic simulation to make trading fun - and the game would be near-perfect for me: A shooter with base and ship building - these three parts a very good - and some space-simulation, that's a totally satisfying mix. Does it achieve the magic of Elite? No. But it's absolutely ok.
I think it can still be improved... I trust the modding community, partly because I was also into modding years ago and I know that you can practically redo everything, and you have to take into account that the current tools were unimaginable years ago, it's really easier to do things that no company dares to do even today... I say this because of the example of the modifications with GPT and the section on working with NPC dialogues.Actually, if someone takes the time to make Starfield have the planetary and ship inputs like SW Outlaws does, that would be enough to make me the happiest man, Starfield would already be almost perfect.

Also, CK2 is not even out yet, is it?

Remember when Skyrim came out? It was a very mediocre game overall. It's the DLC that added new gameplay, release of CK1 and then the modders who combined the engine capabilities with custom extended scripts and creativity that made the game the truly unique experience that you can tailor in a million of different ways to your liking.

Give it time I'd say :)

I'm not playing much at the moment, no spare time, however when I do I find a really annoying thing-my character view keeps jumping out of first person into third person as he's running around. Is there a way to switch this off? It didn't happen with the early version of the game, I suspect it's appeared with the recent update but I can't see any relevant control setting option.
If you have a mouse wheel check that?

I've really enjoyed the game so far and started a second play-through because it'd been so long since I'd played my first run (still haven't got any of the powers in both runs!)

For all the fun the game has to offer - there's one thing I just don't get: That they released the game with what I feel is a pretty bad ship combat style.

Even the 1984 version of Elite had better ship jinking mechanics with enemies getting behind you.

It reminds me of a game my friend used to play in the mid-nineties (might have been Freelancer?). The ships would wiggle towards you then wiggle away completely enabling you to just follow them and blast their rear. Then they'd wiggle toward you and wiggle away again, rinse and repeat. SF is pretty much the same. I'd prefer it that their goal was to try and get behind you and vice-versa to give more strategy. It's the main reason I don't bother with ship-to-ship combat.

The rest of it though is really nice. Love the skills and the progression unlocks you need to get more skills. Base building and ship modification, the different biomes and exploring. Equipment modification and crafting, the different characters you can have as companions. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea but I find the game really immersive.

Still got my 1000 'free' credits or whatever they're called to purchase mods but still haven't got round to choosing any yet. If anyone's been pleased with purchased mods I'd love to know which ones you found worth the price and added to the game.

If you have a mouse wheel check that?
Yes, I realised I can use the mouse wheel to change the pov, but when it drops out of first person to third person view I haven't touched the mouse wheel-tested several times. I'd like to disable that mouse wheel pov control within game and just use the keyboard to change it (as it used to be in the early version) just in case, but I can't see an option to do so.

It changes pov all the time, and has happened during combat, and I'm getting absolutely fed up with it. When fighting a terrormorph I don't want to have to move my finger off the weapon trigger to move the pov to see where I'm aiming!

I'm still wait and see on Shattered Space. Mostly because the Varuun in general have never been very interesting to me. Not sure about playing a full expansion about them. I was pleased to hear that the grav-drive science plays into the situation. The most interesting thing I've heard about Shattered Space, actually.

The base game has been great fun for me. Just over 400 hours of exploring and side missions, mostly... And I'm finally making some progress on the main story, which I had never really bothered with, after being given my freedom early in the game.

I don't even have 20.
The only mods I use are two official Bethesda ones, the space suit and the extra bounty hunter mission.
I like to play games the way the devs meant it and I'm also scared that mods will somehow screw up my game.
I can see why others like mods though, I've seen some pictures of modded ship builds and they look absolutely stunning.

What did you think of the bounty hunter mission, was it worth it?

Also what's the "space suit" mod?

I held off the bounty hunter mission hoping it would drop in price but in the end got bored so I bought it. I had my hopes that it would be like a sniper v sniper hunt which was my own silly fault a couple of locations and then the end but the rifle is well worth it. It's my go to sniper.

That's the opposite of me. I play games the way I want to play so most games I get are open world that support modding. It's lost cause though since I'll forever be restricted to what devs create or allow to be modded.
