Bring on the DOOM!

They have been very good at making a profit - it is true.
Well, FDEV product portfolio and financial health seems quite solid even after the disappointing EDO sales and initial figures for the latest JWE

They reported an operational loss of 1.8 millions GBP for the first 6 months of FY 2022

However, i dont think this means Doom for FDev... at most, it may mean Doom for the main culprit for this loss... Elite Dangerous

If you're in a 747 at 40,000 feet and it goes into a in a power dive, it's still possible to pull out of that dive as long as you don't go over 400 kts, apply air brakes, apply the right about of flaps, and throttle the engines back to idle. You can still save the ship. Someone may have to clean up the spillage in the passenger cabins as they ride the Vomit Comet down with you, but it can still be salvaged. Slight damage may occur if you hit the ground, though, along with a massive amount of side fumbling.

True, due primarily to some one off foreign exchange and amortisation elements, plus a significant increase in R&D spend if I recall correctly. Ebitda seems solid.

The big question is if Frontier was bought out what would happen to Elite.
The main income of Elite is arc’s and that’s not very much.
Odyssey needs some major PR improvement and still a big investment in programming.
Odyssey has no plans for consoles or full VR support again needing more investment in programming.

Odyssey has done more harm to the Elite IP than good.

I see the most attractive part of the ED IP is the Stellar Forge, a great technology for a new IP

i know this is all wild speculation yet this really is intriguing me

and bravo @Rat Catcher , for good or bad this has given the place a much needed sprinkle of interesting chat

Took me a while to sort stuff out but finally got home.

Anyway, this is the link from my desktop, to the Financial Times article I read yesterday - about there being rumors of a joint bid being tabled up between Sony and Microsoft, although I haven’t had more time to look into it today. I’ll be interested to see if the story is expanding still.

As you say, total speculation, but the idea of a joint bid between Sony and MS to buyout FD did seem a little intriguing to me!

As Tencent is already a shareholder, they have the right to make a bid matching in value whatever any outsider offers... if this is what's actually happening (and it makes sense) then it could be a few more months for this deal to be settled. Brace yourselves!

Entropy and Heat Death are terrible things, indeed.
A quiet ride off into the sunset...

Not so bad.

I am thinking the most important part of Frontier’s IP is the Stellar Forge, and Frontier has two versions of it.
Horizons Stellar Forge can run on anything, Odyssey version although still needs work uses a different rendering technology that could evolve into something great.

I see the opportunities for new IP’s built on the Stellar Forge, like

Raxxla, Found
Thargorids Home World
Guardians vs Thargoids

Paywall.

It also has very small maps with rather little variety - so no open world.
The time flies way too fast.
The number of mechs is not exactly more than the number of ships we have in ED, while the customization is rather limited
And mods that "unlock" things are on my hate list - they're like cheat codes in the old games.

However, it's still a nice game and i play it from time to time - but there is no chance i will ever get to 5000 hours in MW5 as i got in ED. Even 500 hours is really far fetched.

The sad part is the fact that launching MW5 on PS4 was a really bad idea and basically killed the game and the dev company.
They registered a big operational loss, any development plans were shut down and the studio that developed the game was relegated to support duties for an old mmo. :(
Just to push back a bit...

MW5 may not be open world at mech level, but you do have the ability to start in or travel to any area in the Inner Sphere to do jobs. Also, each region/successor state feels different (different mechs to pilot/fight, etc.) and working for the various factions carries real consequences--i.e. it's nearly impossible to be on good terms with the Lyran Commonwealth & the Draconis Combine at the same time since they are sworn enemies with a huge common border. Working for one is seen as working against the other.

So, at a strategic level MW5 does have a pretty complex open world.

According to Sarna.net "The Core lineup [of Mechwarrior 5] consists of 50 'Mechs available in 214 Variants, with 49 Heroes. This increases to 58 'Mechs, 272 Variants, and 67 Heroes with the Heroes of the Inner Sphere add-on content. This increases to 58 'Mechs, 296 Variants, and 67 Heroes with the Legend of the Kestrel Lancers add-on content."

So yeah, there's quite a bit of variety there... My top 4 medium mechs are the Kintaro 18 and 3 variants of Hunchback (because their loadouts are so different).
For customization, give me a Stalker and I can give you a powerful artillery piece, a devastating brawler, or something that can do both pretty well.

As far as replayability, I have nearly 500hrs right now and I've only really played for two great powers. There's plenty of vanilla content left for me BEFORE I think about mods...

But that's just me, some people juggle geese.

If its Tencent that buys Frontier and ED. Then my time playing this game will officially end and im off to greener pastures.

You have piqued my interest - is this a sport, like cheese rolling? Always wanted to go out running down a hill after a big wheel of Gloucester.
Every planet has its own weird customs. About a year before we met, I spent six weeks on a moon where the principal form of recreation was juggling geese. My hand to God. Baby geese - goslings! They were juggled.
