Broken Atmospheric Lighting

If I compare this:

To this, it's literally the same effect. Apart from the stars, which is completely unrelated to my point.

Are we addressing the OP's comparison about the example of the red atmosphere shining on the surface not appearing red?
Or are we talking about the stars being visible through a thin atmosphere?
Or are we just saying that the in-game trailer does not represent real game visuals.
I'm confused on what is broken.

There, as you can see the atmospheric density has nothing to do with the visbility of stars as it was already explained in the reddit thread. It's purely an artistic choice:

Yes, it’s an artistic choice; I believe I mentioned it in post #46 of this thread.

The question asked by the Reddit thread was if there are any visibly thick atmospheres like in the trailer, you know, without any stars showing through, making them look all tenuous.

The answer is “no, there aren’t” because it was changed prior to launch.

I believe we are finally getting there... ;)

But that's not because there are 'no thick atmospheres' like in the trailer but simply because they decided to display stars! This is my whole point.

The atmospheres are just as thick as shown in the trailer, the only difference is that one shows stars and the other not.

Yes - and one certainly looks thicker than the other.

I’m glad we understand that having no visible stars in the day sky makes it look thicker than it may actually be.

Mmmm...I'm not entirely sure that's true. The atmospheres have definitely been thinned out/toned down compared to the promotional images.

This was what we were promised:

And this is what we got:

So, while there is some atmospheric effect happening at far distances, we still have the following issues:
  • Atmospheric shading is barely noticeable, certainly compared to what was promoted. Was it an artistic choice to tone it down? If so, where did FDev explicitly say that?
  • Star colour does not work at all on atmospheric planets - it's always flat white, no matter the actual star colour. Specifically, it means the red sunset shown in the 2nd promotional image from FDev is not possible to achieve in the released version of the game.
To my knowledge, FDev have not acknowledged either of these issues.

Nah, I don't believe it. It's more likely related to the problems you (and OP) described below:

100% agreed.

My guess (if I haven't already commented!) is that the correctly-coloured light was doing funny things to the look of the interiors of ports/settlements and with a choice between reworking the lighting or just turning it off, this was the easy, "we're releasing it tomorrow!", solution.

Or something like that. Or maybe not.

As you say, you’re just guessing.

until Frontier acknowledge it, we don’t know if the change was intentional or not.

they have made no mention of fixing any lighting in Update 8 - only optimising it - so I don’t expect they will be fixing this issue any time soon. 😔

I wish the lighting results were half as good as what I've seen in this post, most systems I visit are like the above screenshot. I had to crank my gamma to max just to be able to see planet outlines. Basically flying in a system is a HUD circles in emptiness game for me.

I explained it above. You’re not even reading what I’m writing at this point. Arguing just to argue without thinking. I’m done with the discussion, have a nice day 😊❤️
I provided screenshots, made a photoshop mock up and tried to explain my point several times. I wouldn't call that 'not thinking'. It's more likely that you simply don't understand what I am saying, which isn't necessarily your fault since English isn't my first language. ;)

There is a difference between 'they made the atmosphere thinner' and 'the atmosphere appears thinner because you can now see the stars through it'. Thickness of the atmosphere remains unchanged as far as I can tell. Seeing stars and the broken lighting as depicted in OP doesn't help with that observation though.
