Community Event / Creation Buckyball Racing Club presents: The A* Challenge V2.0

I need to remind myself how to do this after The Thargoid Structure Scramble 2 and there's something I want to test out before I make an attempt on the 2-hour barrier, so I'm running my DBX Hermes in exploration configuration, with a very similar full tank range to my Krait Phantom Palomino.
Intent to race:
CMDR Edelgard von Rhein
class: Unlimited
ship type: Diamondback Explorer
ship name: Hermes

Run complete!
I needed this to smooth out a few edges, so I should be good to go for my Krait Phantom now. A few minor slips only, mostly getting into a routine again.

P.S. Thanks to the Federation Powerplay CMDR who let me go after interdicting me in Sol when I explained that I was only there to race (I'm pledged to Aisling and it's the final day of the PP cycle, so he had every reason to pull me over in my multirole Cobra).

Only a couple of small slips on this run, costing maybe 40 seconds. I can try increasing my fuel load but I think I'm close to optimal, so I'll try it but I will probably need a new route to break 2 hours with this ship.

Finished but not submitting: the final time was 2:06:14.
I think 8t extra fuel is probably optimal. I made a couple of mistakes early on that cost me about 90-100 secs but thought I'd made up for them by manually making improvements to the route the plotter gave me, avoiding a white dwarf stop in one case, also making a low fuel jump near the end. I might try 10t extra and see if the routing inefficiencies disappear but I am doubtful. I think sub-2-hour with 8t extra fuel would be possible with improved flying saving 1 sec per neutron jump, so that is my plan A now.

An improvement in time but not in board position. I spent a lot of time (i.e. 1 min or so, perhaps more) in the Galaxy Map sorting out routing inefficiencies, so that is something for me to look at in future - but for now I'll just take my time on my way back and look forward to the next BRC race, Tunnel-ish Vision, starting June 10th.

I'm still gathering details for FAQs / guides to go into the OP revamp (I'll be spreading it out over the first three posts, rather than just the OP). I'm still off work until Thursday, so I should have chance to finish the update this week.

One thing that I have completed, is going back though every leaderboard update since the very beginning of the Buckyball Run A* (From Anuranium's run that inspired it all and Kligg's first BBRA* entry) right through to @Edelgard von Rhein's latest run, to get a tally of each player's actual number of runs in any given ship type / race class combo.

E.g. that was Edelgard's 7th run in a Krait Phantom in Unlimited Class, while I've made 3 Classic Asp Explorer runs.

The leaderboards now all include a "Num of Runs" column (see the updated unlimited board below).

That's allowed me to have a more accurate "most runs per commander" list, and the Top-10 multi-run commanders are shown below.

I realise that some of you will have runs that were never submitted, because they were slower than your personal best - particularly amongst those who've made multiple runs to try to take the record (or improve it).

I also realise that you're quite likely to have deleted any evidence screenshots of those "failed" runs.

So, for any historical runs that were:
  1. Actual speedruns, not scouting runs, or leisurely "road trips"
  2. Slower than your best time
  3. Complete runs from Sol or Wolf to Sadge
I'm happy to take your word for it and increase your count, as long as you're prepared to give what details you can remember in a public post here or on the Discord.

E.g. "I definitely tried to beat my unlimited DBX time 3 more times, but I was always a couple of minutes slow when I reached Sadge".

Entries_per_Cmdr.png

"Entries" denotes completed Sol/Wolf to Sadge speedruns.
"PBs" denotes personal best runs in a given ship type / race class combo - e.g. How many times you actually appear on the leaderboard.

UPDATE - 05-JUN-3309

CMDR @Edelgard von Rhein has been a regular visitor to Sadge in her Krait Phantom Palomino over the last few weeks, making incremental time improvements and edging ever closer to a place in the "two-hour club."

The latest run was an improvement of almost two minutes on Edelgard's previous best run, but even with a bit of time wasted in the GalMap correcting routing problems, they're not sure whether a two hour run can be pulled off with the current route, "though it would have been close."

I'm looking forward to seeing CMDR von Rhein's next attempt in Palomino - probably sometime after the next Swift-16 race: Tunnel-ish Vision, which begins on Saturday.

For now though, here are the current unlimited class standings...

Messed up too much here, especially at the start. In theory there should have been 9 fewer jumps than my previous attempt and saving time near the start with a neutron star boost saving me from using premium FSD injections but I messed up using the correct injections, scooping too much fuel and many other little mistakes that meant I lost the benefit of many of my extra jumps and added more, I think, at least it felt like it.

Great job crotalus on that Orca time! To get a time like that you must have a 1st rate route - you'll be in the 2 hour club before me I think. o7

It's pretty rare for me to have Monday morning free, so here goes nothing (assuming my self-destruct lands me at Galileo where my ship below is ready to fly).

Expect a quick board update tomorrow evening, so time for Edelgard's Asp run to be included.

OP rewrite is still is draft (well lots of draft snippets that need shuffling into three posts), I'll try to get it out between Swift-16 races, but as the next one is mine, I've got to give that OP priority.

Run complete.
Not the time I was hoping for. A Mauve Adder half way through left me with routing issues and I spent a lot of time on the Galaxy Map sorting them out but I think needing more refuel stops than my Krait Phantom hurt me the most. I made some mistakes, probably losing 60-90 secs from those in total, and cooked my modules down to the low nineties and had a couple of long hyperspace tunnels. I don't see this route getting me under 2 hours in this ship with this fuel load though, would need an extra 1C or 2C tank maybe.

There were about 3 min worth of mistakes. The first two jumps and the last three were about 2 min 30 secs between them, with about 30 secs at most to slipping out of jet cones.
I took a couple of screenshots other than the start/finish ones below, which tell me that I made 126 jumps and used 13 FSD injections. The margin for error is too small and I am not sure how to save more jumps, since I thought I had saved ten compared to my best, although I did manually add a couple of refuel stops before key waypoints. My hands are still shaking as I write, so I guess that will always be a problem now when I get close to the end.

It has been quite the adventure and today's run was as clean as I've ever managed, with few errors and only a single long hyperspace tunnel together losing me 35-40 secs or so. The work I did after the last attempt, setting up bookmarks and using a low-fuel jump combined with a premium FSD injection to reach Sgr A* really paid off. I forgot to screenshot my stats but I think it was 123 jumps this time, though with one or two more FSD injections.
This will probably be my last A* run until August as I have irl things to deal with that are likely to interfere with a long session, though hopefully I'll be able to manage 30-40 min sessions for the next race in the Swift Sixteen calendar, Double Trouble, scheduled for 22-30 July.
