Buckyball Run 9: Move 'em out, let it roll!

@ Makc - rep tank always empty at the wrong time

The sidey may not be the racer for these races, but is FUN. A lot of fun. I used it for the Mischief Mile, appalling time but more entertainment than I expected....and why don't we talk about fuel scooping in it? Because you'll have to remove even the pilot's seat and the canopy to make room for a fuel scoop in that matchbox, that's why.

Now, how about taking an Eagle to the races? :D

And now... that moment when the destination star system drops behind the planet while you're charging FSD...

Wow. I thought my "bad omen" post was bad, but... man.

Impy Eagle is faster! (Yes, I know speed has almost no bearing on Buckyball, but racing ships should be fast, blast it!)

It is fun! :D I love cramming parts on it, stripping the rest down to paint and duct tape, and giving it all the welly it can take.

An Eagle it is then. Down to the paint, tape a scoop to it, jam some jerry cans under the seat (they carry hydrogen fuel in the 3300s, yeah?) and wire the throttle open. I will have to run enter it in Unlimited Solo/PG so it doesn't knock out my other entry.

@Rankaze - The Imperial Eagle and the Eagle spec out the same for the race (the important speed difference, nothwithstanding ;)) but the Eagle is more origami than the Imp, ie. it folds easier. I put those numbers into my calculator, and it comes out good times.

@AkenBosch and Rankaze: Is there a scoop for the rep tank? I will get you next time.)

EDIT: Spec'd and at the start. Travelled from Empire space to the line. Man, I miss the A-rated boost. [boost]mashmashmashmashmash...mashmashmashmash[boost]...

So uh, if anyone here was in that Cobra MkIII I blundered into the path of at Obsidian Orbital, I'm really sorry. Hope I didn't ruin a good run.

And yet, unless I'm doing some mistakes (remove the "unless" at your convenience), is far from being unscoopable-proof...I'm using the old trick of "Oh Be A Fine Girl, Kiss Me" for star classes, but I got stuck anyway with several red dwarves who were quite brownish in their redness, maybe my fault in misreading the map ...

It's somewhat aggravating because when you're too far from a star its locator dot on the map disappears. So if you don't meticulously follow the dotted line in all three dimensions, it's really easy to miss a jump. Especially on a long trip where the route in and out of a system approximates a straight line.

Well, as usual, the passionate drive to reach the finish line has reached its mid-week lull as the newness of the race wears off and the new entries fall to a trickle, and I can finally sit back and relax until the end when--

Oh, what the hell? Ten new entries? Two of you running twice? Didn't you people get the memo? ;)

And actually, it's quite the lively mix as commanders old and new attempt to set brand new records for crossing the bubble. Who would have thought a Tuesday could be so interesting?

First off comes Unlimited Open and all I can say is damn. Kligg already had his hands full with Alec Turner breathing down his neck for first, but both of the veteran Buckyballers have new problems of their own. CMDR Furrycat, a fixture in the BRC revealed his fangs in the Anaconda Victoria Line, surging past The Wedding Anniversary to nip playfully at the heels of Kligg's Asp Grey Mullet. As if it wasn't bad enough for the top CMDR on the board already, CMDR Cookiehole absolutely SMOKED everybody else on the board, solo or open, unlimited or haulers in his Asp RSXRS Falcon in such a fashion that it may take everybody else the rest of the week to recover from the whiplash. Even Bucky sat up and took notice when he saw the time:

Fo8htdg.jpg

But the action didn't stop there. CMDR Drakhyr managed to lop a minute off his time in the White Lightning, overtaking defending champion Alot to take 5th place. Not too far behind Drakhyr, first time Buckyballer CMDR <-lightspeed-> snagged an impressive 8th place in the Asp High Flyer, and CMDR Reload brought out an old Buckyball Favorite, his Anaconda Big Stick to claim 12th.

Admiral Spoon continued to make impressive gains in his Type-9 Sailfish, while not gaining any positions still managing to chop three and a half minutes off the freighter's time to bring it within sight of the race's only Viper Mk IV, and CMDR Tayo fielded the first Sidewinder on the grid, bringing the peppy little D-Minus into Obsidian in fine style. Even if someone else does come along to make a top time in those hull classes, they're going to face an uphill battle.

Speaking of record-setters, in Solo Unlimited, CMDR Geo Falke brought out the field's first Fer-de-Lance to play. While the FDL won't set any speed records on long-distance runs, Geo Falke as of now has clinched the cross-bubble record for the heavy fighter in the form of the Cataphract

In Hauler Open, CMDR Tavo made his second appearance, coming in 11th in the class with the Rough Tide with the only new entry for the class.

In Hauler Solo/Private, after what could only be described as sabotage by sinister outside forces which incorrectly logged his time in open, Geo Falke's hauler Ducktape and a Prayer posted an impressive 2nd place showing. Attaway, CMDR Falke!

So welcome aboard to our newcomers! Lightspeed, Spoon, Tayo, Geofalk and Zenny step on up and receive your dots. And CMDR Furrycat, I know you've been around the races quite some time with the Club and you're no rookie. Bucky's proud to have you on the board in an official Buckyball Run. (Except he tied your dot to a string and dangled it from the end of some kind of electronic gizmo that makes it dart all around the room. Or that may have been Cookiehole's doing to try to keep you from unseating him from first. Things just get kind of weird around here on their own, I don't ask questions anymore...)

Keep those times coming! And remember, if you can't fly safe, fly fast...

I have a dot! :)

Another run submitted. Eagle Origami Egret in Unlimited Solo/Private (want to keep the Sidewinder on the board).

I ran twice in the "Mischief Mile" and three times in this one. I might have a short track problem and I'm ok with it. Now, if I could get the place to myself for a day I could try one of your marathon runs ;).

(I tried the Viscosity race route having only landed twice before... flattened a Sidewinder against an AspEx on SPOC 900 - sorry!. Seriously, when deciding where to locate your planetary base, who looks around and says, "2.5G... yeah, that's the one." RIP Mighty Molasses)

Even though i did Not achieve the time i aimed for in my Type 9. I don't think i will be able to push the time even more with my current skills.
So I will try to tackle a different challenge now.

Good Luck to you all and safe travels.

ElectricZ? Either the Haulers have warped space and time in a new way, or something's wrong with the Hauler (Open) board. At the risk of jeopardising my 7th-place position on that board...8th-place seems to be missing.

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em I suppose. The Blue Asp Fly will take two more jumps but I reckon I can make up that time on the launch and dock phases.

@EZ another bout of percussive maintenance to the BBR supercomputer when next you update... I would request a star next to the upcoming dot for my (hopfully successful) run. I ran the SagA* last year under my original and over-long CMDR 'Lucky' Jack Tripper. This was back in my T6 days, ahh the memories! I'm one and the same for the record books if possible.

Feeling peachy and ready for my run Saturday!

EDIT: Oops! I am talking about the BRC A* Challenge, which I completed in an even more leisurly manner without the excuse of a Hutton pit-stop. Perhaps a * has not been earned yet! Thanks furrycat for pointing this out.

Does BRC A* Challenge count for getting a star on the dot list? Because I did that, albeit at a leisurely pace while dropping off a consignment of Hutton Mugs.

furrycat specialist couriers: Distance is no object

Finally got the time to do a BBR. Since I see not much sense in competing with seasoned BBR Asp pilots, I'll just go with something I enjoy. ;)

CMDR Name: AntiDisco
Ship Name: Dark Comet
Ship Type: Imperial Eagle (Unlimited Open)
"Who is your personal sci-fi/fantasy hero?": Han Solo

If you can't fly safe, fly fast...
Yeah, I tried that. Since I absolutely can't fly an Asp without crashing or totally misjudgeing something I seem to have had good luck with the track conditions as well as keeping my mind on trying to pilot the ship instead of just shouting "Go faster!" at it. Seems it has worked out pretty well. Now there's that uneasy question when somebody will overtake, especially since I seem to have lost my rear-view mirrors in some Toast Rack.

Hmmm. Where had I parked that Courier and that iEagle? Ah, I guess there was something involving lithobraking.

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em I suppose. The Blue Asp Fly will take two more jumps but I reckon I can make up that time on the launch and dock phases.
Wait. You're not supposed to take first place right now. There's many more days in this race! I suggest you start your run next Sunday, that's the perfect day to wait for! :D

I can't miss out on participating in my first actual Buckyball Run (apart from the A* run), so:

Intent to race.

CMDR Stern Winter
Open, Hauler "Yellow Snow"

After thinking long and hard in order to find the most obscure SciFi hero: Kettch (fictitious Ewok pilot in Aaron Allston's X-Wing books)

Hmmm. Time to do something stupid.

Ship Name: Nova
Ship Type: Lakon Type 7
Class: Solo Unlimited

I'll go with the 2D Powerplant and a Black Paintjob, that'll warm her up a bit on the trip through this cold universe.

Errr, you have watched Alot's video of his A* run in a T7, haven't you? :D

(Cmdr Cookiehole, melting landing pads all over the known universe...)
