My my, such a hullabaloo! Long time EVE player here so I know all about griefing, ganking, piracy and trading from both sides of the coin. I also clocked up countless hundreds of hours on Frontier on the Amiga back in the day so I know full well the joys of immersive solo play. To the players worried about "ganking" or "griefing" in ED I say this. Elite Dangerous in open play is probably the safest I've ever felt in any freeform open world online game that can potentially involve player versus player combat. I play in Open all the time (since Beta) unless the servers are being particularly laggy and I have yet to be killed by another player. I've seen loads of other players about and I've had a few "greetings commander" messages pop up but I've only been interdicted 3 times (by the same guy in the same system) and running away was so easy it made a complete mockery of his attempt to kill me. Yes I did incurr some repair costs, but hey, space is a dangerous place, even without other players and I've spent far more on repair bills after fuel scooping or going to FSD too soon after jumping before allowing enough time for my ship to cool down than I've ever spent on interdiction repairs. To the guys craving PvP I will say this. It's not happening in any serious measure in this game in it's current form unless it's pre-arranged, consensual "good fights" because the galaxy is just way too big and the player base way too small (by comparison). Trying to convince people who are not interested in online play to play online is a waste of your time, their time, electricity and storage space on the forum.
With regard to the optional solo play vs open, the removal of either of these options would never be a good thing for anybody involved with the game at all. If you remove solo play, the hardcore solo players will desert, if you remove open play, the hardcore online players will desert, who wins? Nobody. Removing choice is never a good thing anyway. Personally, I would be happy if I could choose between open or solo play, as it is now, or a completely offline mode with separate local saves. At least that way I wouldn't have to deal with being kicked by the transaction server every 3 smegging jumps or so for smegs smegging sake!
I think the best thing that could happen right now is for everyone to just relax, play the game your own way, love it for the thing of beauty that it undoubtedly is (when it works) and wait and see what FD come up with in future releases.
