News Chapter Four - Exploration Reveal

For me, anything that will eventually necessitate restocking isn't something I care to bring along while exploring. I don't even use jumponium, heat sinks, nor AFMUs in generally, only bringing along AFMUs if I have the extra free space.

Will we still get an instant visual of all bodies from ADS?

CMDR’s use this to quickly visually indentify within seconds interesting looking bodies for further investigation.

Spending time to reveal the visuals on every body in system will be a huge time sink & bind for most.

I think that a video demo showcasing the practicalities of these great ideas might be easier to digest, but I think they sound fab.

Will the galaxy map have similar updates with how that displays information; will it have similar screens matching the system map capabilities?

When I was out exploring a starfield that I had visited a couple of years ago I was having difficulty locating the stars I had already visited to finish scanning them. Blue stars on a black background don't exactly stand out and you have to be relatively close before they display.
It occurred to me that 1) you could change the colour to green or yellow to make it stand out more, or 2) you could create a bubble around the visited star (like the powerplay or planetary POI) that decreases in accuracy as you zoom out, but helps you zoom in to the area of space you are interested in. (obviously, I prefer option 2 because it would improve gameplay, but also because it would give a player the apprciation of where they have been and where they haven't).

Also, it would be cool to have systems outside the human bubble that are not showing as having been visited be added to that list if you can see the system map.

Well, if they ever decide to make exploration more hostile, you'll probably need to completely rethink that combat explorer then. :p

Questions, hope I am not too late

1) Will the Planetary songs in the System Map have any connection to the Energy Readings one gets so we can have an audio cue on the planet type?

2) In the screenshot of the Gas Giant are the Material % shown; A place holder, or for the Gas Giant, or for its rings?

3) Just confirming the Discovery Scanner will now have the function of both current Discovery Scanner & Detailed surface scanner and the Detailed surface scanner will now be for probe launching for planetary surface mapping?

Will it be possible to subtract the known energy spectrum from the total 'honk' spectrum returned by the scan, in order to get a better idea of what kinds of bodies are still to be discovered?

EDIT: addressed in OP; yes, this is done as bodies are identified:
As you locate and identify stellar bodies their emissions are filtered out, instead becoming markers on the energy range, making it easier to find the remaining bodies

Okay you've actually made body discovery and exploration much worse - this is exactly what I tried to tell everyone in a few previous threads...

What you've done here looks great and probably is great.

Until you have to do this 10's, 100's, 1000's of times.

The good thing about the ADS honk is that it gives you a display of system bodies immediately. From that you could decide which bodies to go and do things with - surface scan them, fly down to their surface, etc.

Body discovery is currently quick. This new system is going to make it very slow.

This might make a few explorer-types happy. It does not make me happy, and for the reason I stated above - once the novelty value of that 'cool stuff' above has been done a few times, the time it takes to merely discover all bodies in a system is going to start grating. Again, please, picture doing this 10's, 100's 1000's of times - this is very quickly going to end up not being a fun activity.

This is an update for EXPLORERS... obviously they weren't considering you when they decided to do the first Explorers update in 3-4 years, if exploration becomes a chore it's because you couldn't care less about the actual discoveries, it seems it's only the glitter and the now, now, now, that interest you.
and as it's not been seen in action yet we don't know what if any changes will occur!

Why is that? I was thinking something along these lines might do well enough, assuming I can ever manage the Engineer meta grind, which is doubtful. https://coriolis.io/outfit/vulture?...Rf6930DqkuIKVcCAAA=&bn=The Ronin 03D-DW Prime

Looks like I might be able to free up some extra space by getting rid of my DSS now though, since it won't be doing me much good without ammo. :)

Interesting, for me the need to restock is what makes exploration believable and engaging. Having to land and collect materials breaks the tedium of jump&honking and provides an incentive to land beyond making screenshots.

They will be ammo around 200

Thanks just seen.

Question about this one:

Multi-Crew

As part of the exploration update, we are making sure that multi-crew members can use the discovery scanner and detailed surface scanner at the same time and all discoveries are shared among crew or wing.

This allows wings or commanders in multi-crew to engage in exploration together, each earning credits and exploration rank and making the process more efficient.

Currently discovery sharing in wings is a bit borked (with people losing out & the way wings have to scan the body at the same time within 1000 ls of each other), will this be the same or something entirely different?

If for example player A scans the body A1 but player B scans B2, will both players get the discovery of A1 and B2 or do they have to both scan A1 & B2 individually?

Look at it this way: Every now and then, you'll have to break your discovering "monotony" (which will of course get way less monotone with the update) and descend to one of the planets, unpack your SRV and hunt for some materials. Or just outfit a mining laser (no refinery needed!) and enter a ring for some mining fun.

Surely you will find promising places for this gathering excursions while cartographing the galaxy. :)
Really, I like how this updates ties multiple game mechanics together!

I do like that USSs are getting needed attention. As far as explorations goes, I think you have missed the point about what is missing in exploration. It's never been about mechanics, no matter how engaging the mechanics they will become dull and tedious after you've done it 100 times. What exploration in Elite Dangerous needs is interesting things to actually find and discover.

It would be a nice touch if the SRV activity needed to replenish micro probes was a side effect of an exploration related ground activity, say, if a scan of a fumarole field netted a generous Universal Cartographics payday, and chances are you would find enough mats to reload your DSS on your way to the field from the ship.

Actually quite the intestine idea to make it depend on light pollution. It's already competed in game.

Upper or lower intestine?

I like landing on my own accord. As the game is, I can more or less stay out in the black indefinitely as long as I'm careful enough. I like that.

Good god this sounds amazing. Am I allowed to be suspicious because this sounds TOO awesome?

One question/suggestion - any possibility of introducing a mechanic for granting naming rights? It would be so much fun and more rewarding to be be able to name a system and all of its bodies once you've discovered them. Having your name attached is nice and all, but you never see it anywhere other than the system map - you can't even see or look up a list of all your discoveries anywhere in the game. I think allowing us to *see* our discoveries stacked up somewhere, would add to the sense of progression and accomplishment. Right now it's kind of a one and done affair.
