Character Creation in Elite: Dangerous

So if youve got three commanders for instance, they are a little different to each other. Rather than them being totally defined by equipment

And skill; and reputation...

a veteran in a sidewinder is different from a newbie in a sidewinder...

Do you mean a vetran player or a vetran character?

If you mean character, then yes, that's what i'm trying to get at.

They wouldnt have to be majorly different.

Think of ships with multiple crews. Where one character is better at flying (a small bonus to manoeuvring) and another character has a little more skill in something like radar (a small bonus to scanning range) or some such. Again nothing huge, just a little finesse.

Character editor is very important!

Greetings!
For me a nicely represented, detailed character editor, (creation and/or customization), is of great importance in online games, it helps me widely to identify myself with my character, and to invest myself more in its chosen role.
I am quite convinced, that many other experienced and devoted online game players share my view about this matter, especially in the genre of role playing type games.
Hoping to be able to create the character of my red head witch dream-babe Ishtar in this game, who I often choose to play in FRP games with lifelike, detailed enough editors.

Personally I think some games have gone a bit overboard with the amount of options that no-one's really going to notice. Skyrim is a good example of this. I would prefer a level of customisation more akin to Star Wars: The Old Republic. It would probably be easier to implement as well.
I for one dislike limited character editing tools. Skyrim is adequate, but I think the best character creation tool I've seen was in the Age of Conan MMO.

hmmm lets see... when you click a character creation icon it should disconnect you from the game and flash up a message of "Go outside and play" and then format your hard drive...

Not only that, your characters appearance will change over time. It'll age and will become scarred depending on how many times you've been in combat etc.

It'll be possible to see who are veteran players and who are rookies just by their appearance.

That, coupled with your character having a finite lifespan, I think is an absolutely brilliant way of going about it. Really makes your character mean something and has broken away from the traditional age-old way in which players relate to their avatars in mmo's.

That would be a great thing indeed!

I'm really a big fan of role playing and character creation / customisation. Maybe it will be something that's more relevant once planetary landings and character interaction gets developed.

Surely you want the characters to look different when the walking around add-on is released?

As I've said prior in this thread, I love me a good character creator. Wasted tons of time in EVE and Skyrim with it. :)

Part of the reason I backed Elite Dangerous was the promise of eventually being able to get out of my ship and walk around. Part and parcel to that is (in my mind) a robust, fully-featured character creator with lots of options for customization.

How about cybernetic enhancements?
A basic personal avatar is a must have in my opinion, and the more I can customise it the better

I don't want to walk around at all... it's simply not Elite

I believe you are saying that walking around outside of ships is contrary to the spirit of the original game?

To that I'd simply say that Elite: Dangerous is its own thing and needs to be a product of the times it was created. There were plenty of limitations back in ye-olden-days that simply do not exist now. If first person gameplay can enhance the experience then I'm all for it. :)

The characters are just that characters. They do not need seperate skills or anything that can give an advantage, but are an extension of you, the pilot, the commander. I have loved all the Elder Scrolls character creations, heck even the Ultima Online one was good for the day!

I write books (only one published so far), I love manga and anime, and I used to be (probably still would be given the time) an RPG freak so having the ability to create the character is a very important part of a game to me. It creates an individual character that YOU want to represent in the game. If when the leave the ship expansion comes in, everyone looks the same, it would get very dull. Imagine there just being two ship types?!

In a nutshell, yes... I want games that I used to play be remade but not remade and changed, remade and butchered... I don't want this to become a Star Wars Special Edition with tacked on crap that changes it... or a JJ Abrams vision of the Elite universe... just because there were limitations back in the 80's doesn't mean nostalgia can be stomped on, twisted and spewed out...

And Speaking of Lucas products I'd happily back a kickstarter for remaking Tie Fighter with modern graphics but not change the game, story line or universe....

The thread can resume it's normal course now...

Dont like this idea, Elite is about YOUR skill not your avatars skills.

Agree that the game is designed as an interface displaying the skills of the puppet master, and not the puppet, so that interaction should reflect this, through all relevant modes of world (universe?) interaction.

As for character appearance projection, it is an extension of the idea of being able to see NPC portraits, something I have always loved to visualize. So it looks like we're facing the same conceptual visage here, and that is naturally acceptable. With the proper selection of re-colourable hats of course. On which to slap faction symbols on.

If the features below that hat should look like the frog the princess never would kiss, then I would still appear to live in absolute bliss. :D

In space we will of course wear those suits, so what you *have* to wear might override what you would *like* to wear, unless it is like an idealized abstraction, or similar to a passport picture frozen in time. Or hey, they could design hats for space suits! ;)

Well, if you are going to be able to get out of your pilot seat and interact with other characters (say a multi-crewed ship) then customizable avatars are somewhat needed to distinguish each other. Unless you go the Stig route and everyone wear sun shaded helmets all the time.

Wowww, just imagine how cool it would look and feel......your character docks in a space station, then starts walking around through hallways, searching for rooms for trade, equipment, crew, missions, shipyard, etc.....and while doing so, meets lots of various, different other characters on its way, real human players, not some dumb AIs......so you can interact, meaning talk to them, join or follow them, ask for advices, propose to team up, adjust diplomatic relations, or even trade some items with them......this would actually be a nice implementation of the "marketplace type" interaction and trade method, often used in fantasy role playing games, into a space based, science fiction role playing game like this one!

Sounds great, as long as it doesn’t end up like X rebirth, same little ship rooms, same corridors, same station rooms, same lame NPC standing around doing nothing at all.

What you want is something more like mass effect. Lots of atmosphere, good communication system with lots of verity.
