So if youve got three commanders for instance, they are a little different to each other. Rather than them being totally defined by equipment
And skill; and reputation...
a veteran in a sidewinder is different from a newbie in a sidewinder...

I for one dislike limited character editing tools. Skyrim is adequate, but I think the best character creation tool I've seen was in the Age of Conan MMO.Personally I think some games have gone a bit overboard with the amount of options that no-one's really going to notice. Skyrim is a good example of this. I would prefer a level of customisation more akin to Star Wars: The Old Republic. It would probably be easier to implement as well.
Not only that, your characters appearance will change over time. It'll age and will become scarred depending on how many times you've been in combat etc.
It'll be possible to see who are veteran players and who are rookies just by their appearance.
That, coupled with your character having a finite lifespan, I think is an absolutely brilliant way of going about it. Really makes your character mean something and has broken away from the traditional age-old way in which players relate to their avatars in mmo's.
Surely you want the characters to look different when the walking around add-on is released?hmmm lets see... when you click a character creation icon it should disconnect you from the game and flash up a message of "Go outside and play" and then format your hard drive...

I don't want to walk around at all... it's simply not Elite
I wrote fan-fic back in the day precisely to overcome this limitation in Frontier: First Encounters. My imagination required _more_.I don't want to walk around at all... it's simply not Elite

I believe you are saying that walking around outside of ships is contrary to the spirit of the original game?
Dont like this idea, Elite is about YOUR skill not your avatars skills.

Wowww, just imagine how cool it would look and feel......your character docks in a space station, then starts walking around through hallways, searching for rooms for trade, equipment, crew, missions, shipyard, etc.....and while doing so, meets lots of various, different other characters on its way, real human players, not some dumb AIs......so you can interact, meaning talk to them, join or follow them, ask for advices, propose to team up, adjust diplomatic relations, or even trade some items with them......this would actually be a nice implementation of the "marketplace type" interaction and trade method, often used in fantasy role playing games, into a space based, science fiction role playing game like this one!
