Cheating in Elite Dangerous

And you think that those hacks don't concern you? They influence every part of your game, no matter if you're shooting NPCs, mining, exploring or working BGS and PP. Every part of the game is affected.
I have the impression that the poster was implying that scripted cheats do not affect that player directly as they play in solo - if one has no interest other than 'just playing' whatever 'The Other Guy' is doing is not relevent.

Scripted cheating is wrong and should be addressed, which I'm sure it will.

I find it curious that it is now being hailed as an 'epidemic' by some - surely if it was that rampant then action would be seen to be taken?

Oh look. FD can't handle cheaters.

Why is anyone surprised? This is the developer that was too scared of removing legacy modules because it might hurt people's feelings.

Never mind cheaters guys, there are people out there with powerful weapons that you can now never get, and it's not only not a cheat, but a feature!

Going back to ESO now. ZOS says "frell you" when conducting nerfs, and I'm okay with that. Note, I'm a Nightblade. Anyone who actively plays ESO will know why that is significant right now.

We are not talking about scripted cheating in the form of if my ship is hit all pips to shields or taking a ship from point A to point B. We are talking about hacks that practically put players in god mode: instant travel over large distances, teleporting anywhere in the system (yes, that means 3 secs to Hutton Orbital), very fast turning rates, not being mass locked etc. etc.

none of this surprises me - a countermeasure by those who are just plane bored and.................... boring. FD need to have a good hard look at what the vision for ED was and..................... how far down that roadmap they have gone. In my view, they've veered way off course.

Some companies care about their customer relationship, some don't, and some start after their sales and player base start dwindling.

Just finished watching a livestream from earlier today (link below) where several big names in Elite, including the OP, discuss at length the effects of hacking in Elite Dangerous and the unanimous decision they came to is -

IT AFFECTS EVERYONE REGARDLESS OF MODE.

Whilst the effects caused may not CONCERN everybody, particularly players that stick to Solo mode only, I would urge anyone looking to learn more and not wanting to read through the entirety of this thread to watch this video to get up to speed on just how large and serious this issue COULD POTENTIALLY be.

In it they discuss the impact on everything from PP to BGS, 1st discoveries to CG's and of course PVP.

I think you make several good points. Still, it should be addressed. In a shared environment it's important that the habitants understand and respect the consequences for breaking the rules so they can make an informed decision.
Well yes, we make that informed decision when we agree to the EULA.

What I was responding to was "why" people cheat. I think we can agree that in a community setting, cheating is bad. This seems self-evident and it doesn't need to be voted on.

If we can all agree on the fact that cheating is bad then that's all you needed to say.

Cool stream, but still I don't hear any compelling reason why the BGS being altered to random state X (to the unknowing player) is any different than random state Y to the same unknowing player. Sure, it does affect the BGS. So did god rolls with low grade mats. So does other exploits like the skimmer missions/suicidewinders, Smeaton runs for 250m a pop, other crazy exploits that the developers have run in to fix but still a lot of people took advantage, and the only way some yahoo like me knew they existed was because someone posted it on a forum. I would never have known the BGS was being altered. I know some systems seem run through states really fast, you do one mission and you return to a different state every time.. but I don't (haven't) feel like it's due to cheating. It could very well be.

So I keep reading/hearing that it affects all game modes, that everyone should be concerned about it. I just haven't heard a compelling reason why they should be concerned. I hate cheatingPERIOD. It's why I avoid multiplayer in ANY online game. Hell you cannot even play chess online because someone is running a program in tandem and you're playing that instead of them. Since I've known these scripts exist for years, I don't have any new alarm bells going off. To a player like me (damn few), being griefed, pad blocked, whatever.. is as bad as being cheated. It all provides an unpleasant experience that we didn't really want when we decided to play a spaceship sim with such a large playground and like-minded people.

Since there is no way to really play competitively in this game, only consensual PvP or a kind of PvE race if you care for BGS or PP, I'd say you can only cheat yourself mostly.

The only harmful thing that could exist are bots automating PvE tasks.

If you cheat in a consesual PvP group I think you'll be thrown out pretty soon.

So, a lot of Youtubers are making videos complaining to Frontier about cheaters on PC. They're rallying to ban all cheaters. What bothers me is that they also want to BAN combat loggers. Combat loggers are mostly noobs. They grind like hell to get their fancy ship and then they get interdicted by a ganker, and they combat log, because they took their ship out for a flight and got interdicted.

Here's the thing. The ENTIRE Youtube Elite Dangerous community are HYPOCRITES. Combat Logging is an exploit that can't REALLY be helped. Someones power goes out, they get a three day ban because an ED Youtuber threw a tantrum because they couldn't kill the noob they were ganking? Yeah, some go and brag about it in discords...WHO. CARES.! You know you won, they know you won. They whine about the "Immersion" Yet EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM have EXPLOITED glitches IN GAME. The Skimmer glitch, The Selling Colonia slaves glitch, etc, etc. Some Youtubers are 8 BILLION credits up and not even double elite, and haven't been playing for that long! Yet they complain. It seems it's only okay if THEY do it. Cheating is cheating, exploiting a glitch in the game is still exploiting the game. They're calling for permanent bans, then they should get exactly what they want. Frontier should ban THEM for the EXACT same reason they are calling for the banning of others.

Now, I've never exploited the game, I own every ship, and I'm double elite. I have 4 bill in assets and something like 300 mil to spend. Been playing for over a year. NEVER had to exploit the game, and Frontier can check anyone's account to see when they all of a sudden went from 700mil in credits to 8 billion in the matter of an hour. At BEST I say Frontier should take their credits. At median, reset their account to right before they exploited the game, and at worst ban them the way they want to ban combat loggers. I mean think about it. those glitches they exploited are game breaking. While they can go into a gank confident in their nice expensive ship they bought with an exploit, the kid who DIDN'T exploit the game should lose his ship? And if the noob combat logs they should get banned, while the guy who DID use an exploit gets to stay in Open? Those "Big names" Youtubers don't get the RIGHT to complain about noobs combat logging. And the OP is one of 'em!

Using Hack tools should be a permanent ban to solo mode. Solo mode should have no effect on Open. Power play should not exist on solo mode. That's obvious. Maybe Frontier can't do that yet but it should be done.

But banning people for combat logging? Gimme a break! Then Frontier needs to ban people also for exploiting the game to grab billions in credits in half an hour. Those people are happy with themselves and happy to do it, but when it happens to THEM, they complain. My point is, banning people for combat logging is stupid, ban for REAL cheating. Not cuz some noob didn't want his spankin new vette ganked, or because the kid who's got it so bad the power company shuts his power off for a day cuz his dad lost his job and he can't escape his crappy life....

And I was that boy.

LOL!

You're constructing a strawman here.

Combat logging is cheating, full stop. Cheating should be punished. FDev have been incredibly clear on this. If you lose power while you're in combat and get reported one time, that's not an issue. No one (including FDev) cares about a single occurrence. They care about patterns of behavior. First "penalty" for combat logging, which almost certainly isn't sent after one combat log, is literally a warning letter. If you continue "losing power" while in combat with other players, maybe consider another game until your power company can get it together.

Don't want to potentially get shot at by someone? Don't play in Open. When I used to pirate with The Code, roughly 70% of everyone I pulled would combat log. There are people that are notorious for combat logging in this game that every PvPer knows. THAT'S what everyone complains about. Habitual loggers not getting punished.

Okay, and exploiting the game to gain billions in an hour? That's not cheating though...I see no one EVER addresses that little tid bit. Though if I were one who exploited the game like that, I wouldn't want to be called on it or banned for it either, I'd rather push the focus to...combat loggers...An exploit is an exploit. Full stop. Both should be punishable. Would you agree? Or is justification for using the exploit coming, say, pretty much the same justification the cheaters use?
