The title is taken directly from this weeks newsletter. Colossal is a pretty big word. I'll admit to getting a bit jittery.

What is it? Apparently it's pretty big?...

A word from Herodotus, when he described big statues he'd seen, I think.

You're right, it means Big.

The modern understanding though is 'Really Big', or in some interpretations, 'Mind Blowingly Big; the Biggest thing ever; Bigger than you could possibly imagine.'

Ergo: a new galaxy to move goods from X to Y in?

:)

If it is planetary landings, I suspect it will just be an announcement, not a launch. In which case you will have plenty of time to get back.

They couldn't seriously release a beta version and call it released, but they did.

Planetary landings will not fix exploration. It might paper over a few cracks on the placeholder for a few days. To fix exploration, you need to be able to explore, not this tourism with an A-Z of the whole galaxy in our cockpit.

To fix exploration you need to be able to interact more with your environment. You can't do very much of that if you are always stuck in orbit. They could of course add more types of scanners and a deeper mechanic behind them. I would be happy with just that. FD hasn't said one word about changing scanning though. They have only mentioned exploring a planet's surface directly.

That's it!!!!

Think about it - in the same weekly update, he made mention of how fast we are exploring the galaxy! It's going to be a galaxy drive, a la the original Elite so that we can visit the Andromeda galaxy!

(Keep in mind, we are on a collision course with the Andromeda galaxy, so maybe even if you can only fit one galaxy drive to your ship, you'll eventually wind up back in the Milky Way after a few million more years.)

Landing pad on a rock without atmosphere confirmed?

Some seem to deem a barely noticeable layer of questionable particles as an atmosphere, for the purpose of debate apparently. Not going there though. But it is amazing what people do, to create a debate in a vacuum. I'm speaking as the target of that unfortunate process, not in an attempt to make any kind of low gravity jump on you! :D

Wasn´t Powerplay touted as the biggest most awesomest coolest update EVER ? Well I´ll be cautiously pessimistic about the latest marketing department talk about colossal and whatnot.
If it´s just a landing pad on an airless rock it will add absolutely nothing to gameplay, just sayin´.

Indeed. Frontier have also said that exploration won't get any upgrades until planetary landings. Let's hope it's more than just flying over the surface and honking a scanner. But, I'm pretty sure it will be more involved than that.

I would prefer away teams with redshirts to kill off.

Well a big big big rock in space is technically colossal, so maybe they're going for accuracy in advertising for a change?

Largest playable ship? Corvette? Let's leave it so open that everyone can hope again for what they want... guarantees many disappointments.

They have to be very confident we will like it to use such terms. Mind you, they seemed to be confident that we would like powerplay.

Who is this "we" you keep speaking of so overconfidently, Tonto?

I do think it's nice of FD to announce stuff way ahead of time. That will give the unhappy-with-everything crowd and the it's-all-a-conspiracy crowd plenty of time to get themselves all spun up to 20,000rpm.

Edit: Oh, I also forgot the FD-never-tells-us-anything crowd. They're going to be in a lather about this announcement. Because, saying something is never saying enough.

Indeed it will - probably involving expendable "Discovery Limpets" or some such :(

It better be multiplayer crews and getting out of the ship on a planet and do something of interest there, walking into a shop or something or go FPSing.

Also the stuff from No Mans Sky like hunting space goats and dinosaurs.
