ANNOUNCEMENT Community Update (22/10)

Thread Closed: Not open for further replies.
Internal testing is Alpha, beta testing should be done by somebody outside. But yes then or just later when they have a timescale for the required fixes would be good.

This is not true, and varies alot between companies. Take Star Citizen as one example... but... I also have seen companies doing closed Alphas and Betas and open Alphas and Betas... The list can go on for quite a bit. Elite Dangerous itself had a Gamma back in the day for the kickstarters.

TL;DR of this thread's replies:

  • We want bug fixes now
  • We want new game content now, and we don't care if its buggy or broken
  • We want new game content now, fully working with no bugs
  • We want half-baked content now, make it full-baked later
  • We want old half-baked-content improving to full-baked content
  • We want want a content roadmap now
  • We cannot handle changes to the roadmap
  • Bugs not being fixed will mean players leave
  • Features not being added will mean players leave
  • Old features not being improved will mean players leave
  • Changing the roadmap will mean players leave
  • Fleet carriers are delayed
  • Fleet carriers don't exist and won't happen
  • New Era doesn't exist and won't happen
  • FDev should tell us what's happening.
  • FDev lies
That about covers it.

...New Era launches, players play. FDev thinks: well, that was a lot of whining?

I would like to add this...

*If you have a negative narrative about ED and FD, you will lie by omission in order to present your narrative as truth

By this rationale, Star Citizen would be in beta when it clearly isn't (missing key tech like AI and MMO networking) - it has't reached its goals for release.

Alpha is upto feature complete for release; beta is feature complete, extra content creation and bug fixing for release, internal and/or external.

I did say I knew nothing, thanks for the information.

Just as an aside: someone wrote in here some pages ago about a 40 second wait for Geo count when scanning with the FSS. It must be tied to performance/frame rate as, after reading the comment I timed around 30 scans (I was in a large system - all virgin) using the stopwatch on my HOTAS. I scan in 6 seconds as an average (with a variance of only a small fraction of a second). My framerate in the FSS screen also averages 300FPS (which makes me think that screen isn't 4K as I'm half that in normal space) - in VR where it is only 80FPS it takes considerably longer (I'll time it next big system). So 'fixing' scan time may be as simple as not using frame rate as a timer.
That is known, and it is indeed due to the frame rate. I think it is in the issue ticket.

Now if only I knew how to change my frame rate. Is it worth downgrading graphics for... hmmm....

That's standard troll tactics though.

Isn't that what your list just described? :D

Or, maybe your list is describing what ED community, as a whole, asks for FD to do in a single stroke, sort of? If that is the case, I can agree that my addition doesn't fit... but... I do have a funny feeling that some people, in this case, are actually asking for all of what is in your list, and it all has to be released at the same time... yesterday, prefered. :D

Agreed! :D

Unfortunately, Xbox & PS CMDRs cannot alter their frame rate. Tieing a mechanic to framerate isn't the answer.

Seeing as the September Update arrived a month ago, you appear to have exampled a bug that isn't quick to fix.

I am in favour of the focus on bugs, and iterate the sentiment already expressed. Make it real, make it focused AND please FD make sure your version control and regression testing is spot on. The worse thing I can see happening (as has happened before) is that you fix something and then it is reintroduced again in a subsequent release.

I really enjoy this game, I want it to last a bit longer....

Another good example of a long time bug is known as "Elephant Butt Leather" on PS4. Will we see it resolved, after however many years it occurred?

"it doesn't happen to me, on PC"
So what. You aren't affected. Stop being selfish.

Come on @Diffin, this is now the third post where you have had a go at someone. We get it, you have a thing about the way people express themselves, but it's not your job to tell them and certainly not the place. Just chill buddy.
Don't call me 'Diffin'.

I haven't 'had a go' at anyone. I've just been 'taking out the trash', as they say. I don't have 'a thing' about the way people express themselves. I have 'a thing' about being called 'a complete idiot' on this thread just for asking a simple question pertinent to the OP's announcement; I have 'a thing' about people casually using the word 'idiot' to describe the intellectually disabled; I have 'a thing' about foreigners telling me that I'm 'in trouble', for living in a country where respect for the rights of defenceless people is cultivated in schools and enforced by law as a matter of Government policy. And if you or anyone else wants to try to provoke me over it, I think I already made it quite clear in my post that you just quoted, that I agree that this forum is certainly not the place to be doing it. And don't tell me to 'chill'. And I'm not your 'buddy'.
..the irony of this post is not lost on me :)
Oh, I rather think it is; I wasn't being ironic. Just you go up to the first person you see next time you're on the street in whatever rootless colonial nightmare you hail from, and call them 'a complete idiot' to their face, then tell them it's all right because idiots can't understand when they're being abused, then tell them they live in a totalitarian state, then tell them to stop having a go at people, then tell them to 'just chill buddy', and you'll soon find out just how ironic I was being.

I am on PC, and I am aware of consoles having issues. I do wonder if Star Citizen ever will become a console game though... oh.. sorry... lost my track...

I agree 100% that we, as PC players, also have to respect the fact that Elite: Dangerous is available for both XBoxOne and PS4... sometimes it feels like PC players aren't aware of it. This fact will also dictate, somewhat, the roadmap for Elite: Dangerous as a game. And yes... in some cases it will be a limiting factor.

I wouldn't put anything past Frontier's QA process, but within the last twenty years most companies have got that one beaten. These days you can get the same effect but it's not due to a direct regression. It also happens when there's a complex bit of code that's prone to fail with certain symptoms. Various things that disturb it then cause the same thing to happen. They get fixed and then something else fails and has the same effect. Hopefully that sort of thing is what gets fixed when they look at stability issues. They should not only fix the bugs but also the weak code that keeps being a problem.

FDev thinks: we've spoiled these awful people and should have donated their money to a charity for the intellectually disabled instead of giving them what they demanded. The rest of the community would have understood.

I doubt that the delay in introducing fleet carriers will have a positive effect on improving the quality of the game. Alas, the trend of updates is not in favor of the developer. There has not been a single update, large or small, which did not entail a number of serious problems. As for me, you will spend almost a year fixing current problems, but the very first update with new content will return them from nonexistence.
