Hardware & Technical Computer Build to run Elite Dangerous

I have an i7 2600k with 16gb ram

My GPU is an Nvidia GTX 460 1gb , do you think I am being optimistic with this card?

It runs most games I play with no issues at all (Arma3, Wargame AB, DCS flightsims)

You might be okay with that card, I can't remember if the basic spec that Michael was running was the 1Gb or 2Gb GTX285. You should be able to run the game without some of the graphical bells and whistles but I'm no expert!

Edit: Here's the spec Michael is running:

Direct X 11
Quad Core CPU ( 4 x 2Ghz is a reasonable minimum)
2 GB System Ram (more is always better)
DX 10 hardware GPU (my reasonably low end machine has a GTX 285 with 2GB)

I should also add those specs are for Alpha with the final specs likely to be lower after some optimisation.

How much ???!?!!!?

I'm sorry but I caught a glimpse of a price list in here, too much in shock to go find it again.

Windows 8.1 £189.99 :eek::eek::eek::eek:

for an operating system, and not a very good one at that.

let me go check how much the latest version of OSX is.... oh yeah, FREE

also it will most likly have suport removed end of 2015 , if you follow the logic that xp suport ends dec 31st 2013 , win 7 is sceduald for the year after. possibly M$ have decided to bring in the bussness modle they proposed (or was it a threat) to the US senate over a monopoly commision starting an investigation (a new OS relised every year , without any suport). tho we do at least have lynux and other options these days.

One and half year old rig

I7 860
GTX580
8GB Ram

Should be enough for starters but may upgrade graphics and possibly SSD if necessary.
The specs for Elite should be light when compared what Star Citizen will demand

Interesting - I wasn't aware it was free (thought it was free for upgraders from previous versions). Not that OS X was previously expensive - about 20 euros or so.

Problem is, of course, that what you do not pay in the OS, you pay in overexpensive HW, sometimes with dubious performances characteristics and quite limited choice.

Advice for Commander Mick

Commander Mick.... some thoughts for you.

1. There is no need to spend anywhere NEAR AUD$4000 unless you want to keep retailers happy donating money to them where it is not required.

2. NOTHING can beat a custom build rig you put together yourself. With pre built ones sure they pick some good parts and they also pick some parts that are mediocre that people may not notice.

3. I would not be building a solitary thing till Feb / March next year. Prices will be lower after Christmas, new video cards will be out and there will be more motherboards supporting the Intel 2011 socket Ivy Bridge set of processors and they too will be lower in price by then (4 memory channels vs 2 for practically the same price)

4. I would strongly advise AGAINST going to one of those larger retailers.

I am sure people here will be happy to give their specs of their new builds here. There are many computer shops that can build you a custom rig for a fraction of the cost. You can give them a parts list that the community here can help you with, then you just say "build this". For me I will be building mine myself.

Choosing cards etc take effort and time. You don't just point and go "that will do the numbers are large than that one" take for example a 2 GIG nvidia 770 vs a 4 gig 770, the price at the moment is only $120 more with the 770 here in Aus BUT there is a more expensive 780 with only 1 gig.....

SO Mick time for you to study up, read up, ask people, research places like Tom's hardware guide. You can cocpy and paste processor types and look for reviews on them online, it will take time but the knowledge you will gain will be amazing.

If you do not then some retailer MAY take advantage of that.

Keep away from the big ones and do NOT spend anywhere NEAR $AUD4000.

:)

[EDIT] I just went to the website of a local retailer and used their online custom PC builder. I picked high end parts specialised power supply, ivy bridge I7 (12 threaded CPU !!) and it was UNDER $2000AUD.... ok not MUCH under $2000 but NO WHERE NEAR $4000. :) I reiterate. NO NEED to spend anywhere NEAR $4000AUD :)

Agree fully with Styggron's post & would like to add that if anyone's toying with the idea of building a new rig, then joining the forums at overclockers.co.uk may be worth taking the trouble to do. The community there is very knowledgable, most are gamers themselves, & will give you intelligent answers if you ask them to spec you a machine.

Very sound advice.

I must have spent three months or more trying to decide what I'm going to buy.

I've still not decided between 1150 and 2011 sockets, these are the newer architectures. What puts me off of 1150 is that it is 'limited' to 32GB on dual channel ram. What puts me off of 2011 is that the X79 chip set is two years old so might be replaced soon.

And graphics cards! Well, I've been following the discussions with great interest... At the moment, I'm tending towards a Radeon rather than nVidia.

People say not to waste money on 2011/Xeon capable 'stuff' and all we really need is a full quad core i5 with 8G of RAM with a decent 2GB RAM graphics card.

But I've never been happy just buying 'what I need'. I'll delay buying to get the machine I want, even if it means missing Beta, but I hope to buy in January in the expected sales...

Hehe, if money wasn't the limiting factor, I'd have build an LGA2011 system with 64 GB ram & killer SLI/Crossfire GFX. Alas, I'm on a budget and had to settle for less. TBH, I'm thankful I was able to get a solid rig in time for E: D alpha :).

The 2011 platform with its quad channel memory is rather irrelevant for gaming - actually, many think the z87 chipset is a better improvement than haswell CPU was. Nevertheless, the i7-4960X is probably the most powerful CPU for Extreme performance.

But the added complexity and cost is not really worthwhile for the vast majority.

If you go for a Z87 i7 (4770k@4.6ghz+) with watercooled xfire 290x, 32GB of 2400 DDR3, 2 raid 0 250Gb SSD you are already going so overboard :)...

I simply gave in to my inner voice and purchased, I had a budget - and I just went over it ( I think it was the Joystick ).

So despite perhaps missing out on post Christmas sales - I am happy...

Exact same experience here (sans Joystick) :).

Eheheh I know the feeling. In my case it was the watercooling system ;)
