Hardware & Technical Computer Build to run Elite Dangerous

After getiing back Home from Town.......

I've just been to the bank which was closed so I couldn't get my statement and then I visited Harvey Norman again and I told them I will see them after getting my required bank statement next Monday. I'm still not sure about getting the finances I need. So I will know next Monday perhaps if can have the computer within a week or two. The salesman at Harvey Norman told me they can put in the new NVidia GTX 770 graphics card, the Cooler-Master 650 Watt PSU, and a Corsair SSD in my new computer. He said they are going to have the rebuild the machine to put in these parts. It's going to be another PYRON model. As they are only allowed to rebuild PYRON'S.They are going to make it otherwise the same as the original with i7 (Quad Core) Intel Processors, 16gbs of RAM, and a Blu-Ray Player/Burner among other things.

The original SSD was a Kingston model if that means anything to anybody here. The new SSD the salesman offered me was a Corsair and something else I can't recall. I picked Corsair because it was one of the recommended brand names for a PSU. So, I hope that one works. Otherwise, I think I still have until Monday to change my mind. In meantime these components will be traveling from some warehouse in Melbourne

All being well, I should have a new computer with the next fortnight. There never need me ever having to offer my game ALPHA access to another person because I couldn't participate.

BTW have the exact dates for game ALPHA access has been finalised? Not sure if I can make it within the first fortnight of December

no dates yet , just december . . . yikes december starts tomorow

i hope scan pull their finger out its been 14 days as 3 items went out of stock while i was waiting , one after another. second worst build experiance ive had in over 500 machines. never gonna use them again.

I've had my mind set on the 770 for a while but must admit the 280X has nudged ahead from the info I've been reading about it over the last few days. Are you sure its the hotter card though?, from the website I've looked at it seems to run a good 10 degrees cooler than the 770. I think since its going into a mini pc case its important to keep the temps down as much as possible (I won't be overclocking anything).

Cheers Pyros.

Edit:
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/R9_280X_Direct_Cu_II_TOP/30.html
This has the 280X listed as running at 32 degrees idle, 70 degrees load.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Zotac/GeForce_GTX_770/30.html
This has the 770 running at 42/80.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to find another site that can confirm it (I always like a 2nd opinion of these things :))

Well you are comparing probably the 280X with the best cooler to a "not quite so stellar in the cooling department" GTX 770 :D. Yes, that DCII cooler is brilliant at dispersing heat with low noise.

The power consumption of the chips is close enough so that the card with the better cooler will be more silent/lower temperature.

But if everything is equal (never is :p), the GTX 770 will run cooler (or more silent) simply because being a less powerful chip, it consumes less (although I suspect the switch to 7gpbs RAM did increase a bit the card power consumption).

But as long as the card you buy is silent enough for you, you should get the the most powerful one within your budget. And the DCII is a very silent and very powerful card :)

I've still got a month to decide but I think the 280X edges it. Cheers Pyros

Hey Mick thought
4000 AUS that is a lot should be able to get a kick ass PC for that.

I was going to try and do you an Intel build as well that was under 2000AUD but I guess now you have a bit more to play with :D

Using OCUK again just to give you an idea of what to look for in your price range hope it helps :).

Don't think I missed anything out I guess taking in to account the amount they will charge you to build it that would be roughly in your price range.

You could save a bit as I said before by reusing your old HDD and DVD drive for now go for a cheaper case that would help keep the cots down a bit.

Phwew!

Put the parts together & did a power up test:

And yes! All the fans spin, video signal is clear from the GTX, USB kb & mouse work, CPU and all three SATA devices are correctly recognised, amount of RAM is what is should be & X.M.P. profile gets the memory clok right - yay, looks like a successful build :D!

Now I'm waiting for the OS more than ever. Good thing is that it should arrive on Monday or latest on Tuesday :).

That Build Looks More Interesting Than The One I'm Using.....

It's a pity that I'm restricted now by what Harvey Norman are allowed to work with. They are only allowed to build PYRON'S from the ground up.

I don't think we have anything like OVERCLOCKERS UK in Australia. Is that some sort of television series?

It's a shame I will only be getting my instant $4000.00 dollar budget with a dealer (Harvey Norman) that have been restricted to (As I mentioned earlier in this post!) building PYRON from the ground up only. Otherwise, I would be very interested in making a list of these impressive bits n pieces and asking them if they could do that one for me. I like the gaming case as well. As I think look is almost as important as function.

Does it truly matter what case you pick?

They also asked me if I wanted a Radeon because they were cheaper, but said NVidia, because I though they were better.

Is that true?

Just a quick post about a boo-boo I've just made.
I have to upgrade my GPU and hence a PSU to fuel it. I chose a Corsair RM850 which I tried to install last night. It's too long!
I measured the space inside my case and I have 20cm to play with. The PSU is 18cm but I thought I'd be able to squeeze it in. I completely forgot that the cables also take up space. I need another centimetre at least.
DOH!
I've ordered a new case which is no bad thing if it makes my system better.

Minti2

Deadly, But very fluffy...

Arg! i bet it took you a few minutes to admit defeat, i would have been turning it around trying all angles to fit it in! then it dawns, its beaten you! lol

Still if your getting a bigger case you should be good for upgrades in the future for some time, the rig ive ordered is reasonable big so hopefully future upgrades proof to.

Aye, you're right. I spent 2hours trying and even sat on the toilet for 15 minutes trying to outthink my initial idiocy.
I don't mind getting a new tower really. It's just that my other half will equate a new case with a complete new computer and I'll get the pursed lips, raised eyebrow reproach that always makes me think I've done something naughty, like I'm 5 or something. :D
Anyway, just wanted to share it in case other 1st time system builders are in danger of making the same mistake. :)

I can do it in less than a minute - hacksaw! I've "modded" a couple of cases this way in my time, for PSUs and for GPUs. ;)

I'd say if you case is decent enough (other than not being quite big enough for that PSU), get the dremmel and metal files out and cut yourself some space. If you don't have case modding tools to hand, then yes it probably is cheaper to just buy a new case, just make sure it is big enough!

Walk away :S:S:S

Though, I do find it hard to ignore how they had helped me with my finance problem.

Really upgrade any of existing computers to the desired specs. I'm not even sure if it's possible to upgrade these older existing models to what has been required here.

Just advising you to be cautious Mick. ;) If your paying a lot of money always be sure it is the right option for you. As for upgrading older PCs, I've got a PC I originally built around 2002 but have steadily upgraded it over the years. To be honest though only the case is left from that original machine, motherboard, CPU, PSU, drives ect have all been replaced as better kit came out. Still has it's floppy drive too! :D

I thought about 'adjusting' the case but I decided to splash out a Corsair Carbide Series 300R instead.
Hell, why not?
Still need a joystick and I would like to get a SSD soon. Might wait for after Xmas in the hope prices drop. I don't think my motherboard or CPU needs any upgrading just yet.

I've been building my own rigs for years now and like Geraldine says, they get upgraded, and upgraded and upgraded, in the end lasting years! So this last PC I built (last November) I went for all new parts and went nuts on a case that would last for years, a Cooler Master HAF 932.

Its a beast but tonnes of upgrade space, loads of room to work with, water cooling ports if ever that needs upgrading, excellent reviews and one of the best cases I've ever worked with. Even internally powder-coated, no sharp edges, great air flow... For ~£100 (yeah its not cheap) but its a lovely bit of kit.

Anyway... just my two penneth worth on my case incase others are looking around and have contemplated the HAF range :)

Wish that I had paid more attention to the case when I ordered a pre-built PC - 6 years later it's the only original part...

Impressed Geraldine has managed to squeeze 11 years out of her case.
Wonder if anyone can top that?
