Hardware & Technical Computer Build to run Elite Dangerous

There should not be any problems with drivers, it is always possible to select "Clean install" during NVidia driver installation.
Years ago I had to use drive cleaners to move across. But that was some time ago!
I doubt it, as far as I know R9 is mostly rebranded HD7*** series.
GTX 6-series are not that old tech.

R9 270X is rebranded HD7870 and R9 280X is rebranded HD7970 according to the information available in the Internet.

Ahh! I wasn't aware of that! So a R9 270 is basically the same'ish as my 7870XT?

I'm hoping my old girl (CPU) with this card should run ED fine - All feedback thusfar implies it will. Fingers crossed!

The only difference between R9270 and HD7870 are GPU and memory frequencies, the rest is absolutely the same. You can see it from the table found in this review:

Running it on:

i73770k@4.6ghz
asus p8z77-v deluxe
16GB Corsair Vengeance
x-Fi Titanium
2-EVGA 780ti-sc
Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog
Catleap Q270 27" IPS

Computer Specs

Hello all,

I'm going to be buying the premium Beta next week, upgrading from just the normal game, and I was wondering if my computer is actually good enough to play this game.

I have:

Intel i5 2400 1155 3.1ghz
GTX 670 2gig
G-skill Sniper 16gig 1866

I don't really have many issues with games, I usually run one monitor for gaming with another monitor to the side with just the desktop on it.

Will I need an upgrade for Elite to be pretty?

No, you won't need an upgrade. That spec is plenty beefy enough Elite: Dangerous on high settings. Even in it's currently slightly poorly optimized Beta state.

Rig to play at

Hello guys,

I'm about to get my new rig. I want to play Elite at max settings on a triple monitors display (5760x1080) at 60 fps. The question is : will my computer be able to do it ? Here are the specs :

Intel I7 4770K
8go ram
SSD (system and game) + hdd
Mobo : Asus Z97-A
GPU : Radeon R9 290
Windows 8.1
Internet speed : 100mega

Thanks in advance

It is really hard to give you the answer but R9 290 might not be enough for stable 60+fps at 5760x1080 now. Some optimizations should be still expected. Neither Crossfire or SLI are supported yet. However, support will be implemented at some point later.

Yup, unfortunately, this is what I thought. I could install a 2nd R9 290, but I'm afraid the power unit won't be up to the task. It is a Seasonic X-750 80PLUS Gold (750W) and I'm kinda afraid to change it (so many wires, afraid to break something !).

I'm a sad panda now :-(

Unfortunately, I have to admit that Seasonic X-750 80PLUS Gold (750W) is a no-go for R9 290 Crossfire. R9 290 consumes more power than my GTX Titan, and Be Quiet DarkPower PRO P9 850W 80+ Gold was just capable of providing enough power of GTX Titan SLI. Although I had to switch multiple rails into a single one.

Of course I have 2 water pumps and 7 coolers but I they do not consume 100W.

Buying a basic gaming PC

So I'm hooked on PB and want to experience ED properly - the integrated graphics in my work laptop are playable, but not at the native 1680 x 1050 of my monitor and certainly not with plenty of detail.

Thinking of splashing out on a new desktop - nothing fancy just something that is "good enough". I've built a few PCs but that was about ten years ago, and a lot has changed.

Before I splash out £400 (incl the OS) will this give me a pretty decent experience?

Anyone have any experience with that vendor? Any other recommendations in the same price bracket?

You'd need to define "decent experience", as it means quite different things to people.

That said, IMHO no, not decent.

I'd say you'd be much better off with i5 4430 & GTX 750 Ti (Maybe with 500W PSU), but that ups the price to £538 (£557 with the PSU). Pros: 4-core CPU & 2 GB GPU.

i3 4130 & GTX 650 would be £436, but even that might struggle with Elite: Dangerous. Cons: 2-core CPU, 1GB GPU.
Of course, you could get well playable FPS at 1680x1050 if you tone the settings down (FXAA or no AA, shadows low or none, bloom likewise etc.)

For a basic gaming machine capable of running E: D, you might want to look at building something along the lines of a Steam Machine.

You can't buy them off the shelf yet, but in the next couple of years they will likely become the defacto standard for all PC gaming rigs as Valve slowly get their act together.

That machine in the OP is not worth getting. The PSU limits a decent GPU upgrade for one.

I would go for a quad core cpu minimum with 8GB ram.

As for the GPU I think the GTX760 is best price for power right now and it runs E: D nicely.

Keep an eye on the second hand market as that is a good way to pick up bargain priced gaming PC's.

I'm getting the beta on 29th July. Upgrade in the works but I can't do the whole computer at once.

I've got a 6 year old rig

Q6600@3.1ghz
Asus p5k
6gig of 800mhz ddr2
Geforce 7600 (I know)

I use this as my Hackintosh and generally only do console gaming these days

So, I need first to upgrade the GPU to something that will run elite on max on a single HD screen (either my telly or monitor) but will also run it on the oculus rift.

Not gonna go multi monitor because I'll get a rift instead

I realise I'll get a bottleneck but I just need to run it while I wait for my i5 4670k and 16gb ram system later in the year.

Any thoughts? Need to stay nvidea so it works on OSX. Got my eye on gtx770 but its about 240 quid... Some 760s are about 170 which is better.

I'm not really an expert. I just want bang for buck. I'm likely to only ever play elite and skyrim on this rig.

Thanks in advance!

Really happy with the visuals - I have a GTX760 (with I7 and SSD).

As a side point I am amazed they can use the words "gaming computer" with that sort of spec.

That's a really horrible system you've linked there. Weak PSU, awful GPU and slow processor. You can do much better :)

I'd aim for an AMD system, the 6300FX black cpu is a good buy at around £70.
GPU wise the 7870, R9 270 and R9 270X are good choices on a budget.

For a self build with new parts I'd expect to pay between 420 and 470 on parts. Plus OS. So you'd be about £70-120 more but you'd basically get twice the gaming power (at least!).
