"Console development continues behind the scenes with an Autumn release still on schedule"

Console CMDR's....I just wanted to pop in and say that it's really not as bad as people are saying, performance wise. Absolutely riddled with bugs, yeah, but performance wise, I think you're going to be fine on console and as some of you have already said, all this hoopla is probably good for you. It means the issues will be ironed out before they port it for you. Moving into PC gaming as been eye opening for me...they may be "teh mastur race" but there are attitudes that come along with that. All this carping about frame rate is ridiculous. One dude literally said that anything below 50 FPS is "unplayable." I mean, I don't know even know what to say to that. Sure, there's some optimization that needs doing, but it'll get done and some of the bugs will get ironed out and you guys will have it soon-ish. Chin up and good luck out there!

Ultimately, what defines console performance will be the compromises that are made in order to deliver a stable experience at a half decent resolution. For me, the compromises required to run Odyssey on OG PS4 and XBox are clearly going to be too much: relatively low frame rate, resolution and textures all combine to make an overall objectively poorer experience.

As someone who played exclusively on the XBox for 3 years, I totally get that. When I log back in to my XBox, yeah, it doesn't look as crisp and responsive as it does on my PC, but it is totally playable and had I not ever played it on PC, I'd still say that it looks very good.

Yeah exactly. It frustrates me that the new consoles are perfectly capable of delivering that "PC" experience, with higher frame rates and resolutions, but Frontier simply don't have plans for it. Such a missed opportunity.

one things for certain, it's become very clear why it wasn't released on consoles

According to Arthur the CTL in another interview (clipped on Elite Week and discussed but not an interview given to Elite Week) the reason is paraphrased as:

At Frontier offices in Cambridge they have a whole room set up to run / test / develop the Console versions and due to Covid they haven't been able to get in as much and access to that room has been limited. He knew mid last year that Consoles would be delayed.

We weren't told until late last year or early this year and we weren't actually told the reason either until that interview a year later, aired 15th May this year, despite asking numerous times. Both the Elite Week clipped version and discussion and now the full vid (thanks @stormyuk for the link) are on the PS forum thread:

Implication ofc is that until they get back into the office properly, Console development will crawl at a snails pace. Just wish they'd flipping tell us the truth if thats whats happening instead of winging it in interviews and giving misleading information to keep us hanging on.

Frontier can't even make the PC version properly, while developing and optimizing for consoles is much harder. This is why there are no dedicated next-gen versions in development. They would properly utilize the abilities of the PS5 and the Series X|S. Without it, we are stuck with backward compatible old versions. Therefore Odyssey will be either dumbed down to minimum settings in order to run on the old consoles, or will be dropped altogether from consoles. It's clear that Frontier has difficulty doing it, the game is probably way out of the scope the team can handle.

I still suggest that console support will be dropped altogether. As much as I hate to say it.
That decision isn't going to be made immediately after a further commitment to delivering the game on consoles has been made. I`m quite sure they carefully monitor sales on console platforms and assess the cost-benefit case for maintaining them. We`ll see how that pans out. Hopefully, game pass has opened up the game to some new box owners.

Porting to console is nowhere near the problem it used to be, given they are now just mid-range PCs without a keyboard/Mouse.

I am trying to borrow some of the optimism of @Scoob101

An enhanced version of Planet Coaster for the PS5 was released within that same timeframe. So perhaps the limitations aren't as great as are being inferred.

The only reason I suggest console support will be dropped is that I was heavily involved in another game in 2018 that had console support dropped soon after it was released.

I'm seeing history repeat itself with almost identical circumstances here (less the COVID crisis of course). Time will tell I guess.

As a Xbox one player ( married with a kid in uni ) If frontier said no support Xbox one I would upgrade . This would be a win win for fdev and Microsoft . And I would totally understand the reason for it . PC gamers have to upgrade why not consoles

For me this translates to a simple no. Frontier doesn't have the resources to optimize for so many platforms and consoles. And they also don't give a damn. Almost every other live-service game has already been upgraded to next-gen. Elite is one of the few exceptions. I don't have trust that they will ever do it or that they even understand what they could do with the systems.

I think that's a general statement, rather than a promise of an enhanced port to current gen.

As in, when Frontier deal with the new platforms (not necessarily for Elite Dangerous Odyssey) we want it to be special...
Huh? Come on now, why would Gareth Hughes, lead designer on Elite Dangerous be taking about other projects when asked a question about Elite Dangerous. That's a massive glass half empty @boppa_ ! even for me and I can be a critic myself on how console players appear to be treated sometimes.

That's honestly where I'm at with it ... and I'm not budging until I hear or see someone from Frontier say anything different.

What little faith I had, when I made that thread in August, has dwindled to an ember.

I`m highly sceptical that's an accurate description of the constraints. All the dev and some of the testing is done on a Dev PC without a dev kit in sight

Playing Odyssey myself.

Gonna' be blunt here, speaking as someone you all know used to be heavily invested in the Xbox version of the game.

I would seriously start preparing yourselves to hear the news that Odyssey on consoles has been cancelled, later this year.

The jump in system demands is huge. If it stays this way after the optimisation patches rolling out presently, there is no way in heck that this will run on a 2013 Xbox One.

Whilst some have suggested that new games are not required to run on both systems, Odyssey is not a new game, technically speaking. It is still a DLC expansion, not a new game. It still requires the base game to run. This matter is further complicated by the fact that, last I checked, there is no way way to make a game run on an Xbox One X, which I do think could run it after some serious patching, but stop it running on older 2013 spec consoles.

Even if there is a release on the Series X, I imagine Xbox One X users would be left in the cold.

Given the implications of launching a badly running game on consoles, as seen with Cyberpunk last year, I've no doubt the lack of option to buy on consoles as well as the lack of a release date is FD holding their cards close, leaving themselves the option to cancel.

Because in the long run, that may prove to be the smart choice.
