Console Update

Don't worry, that seems to be a translation issue. I actually meant "from you" with "from your side". Otherwise I would have said something in the lines of "from your camp".
I see now that rootstrat explained more clearly what he found wrong in my message. I did say "the way I can keep playing" and that was taken a little bit too literally - of course I don't mean that you can't keep playing the old version of the game. My point was it's almost as good as that, because ED is a live service game that relies heavily on the living world and updates.
Simple miscommunication between us two, no harm no foul.

Well apologies that I didn't spell it out completely, I thought it was pretty clear I meant playing the updated version of the (live service) game. Of course I understand this doesn't mean the game will now throw an error on launch.
I (and probably lots of other people as dumb as me) would take it word for word. Hence the panic amongst some users.

As I said, it's just adds to the problem.

Communication is important (and I fully realise how ironic this sounds on fdev forums, believe me).

The thing I am peeved about is that during this period of cost of living crisis they want us to buy a PC for at least £1,500 in order to play the game. The PS5 should be quite capable as games and demos like FC6 and The Matrix has shown.
It seems that the time required for them to actually fix the mess they did with the engine upgrade would be like 2 years standing still game-wise... and we've been there before, it was a risky decision... lots of people left back then...

Frontier seemed to have tried to upgrade their engine together with launching Odyssey... all at once... then things went "out of hand"... and after a full year working out the PC version, still a LOT to be fixed...

You can't build professional communication on vague assumptions, it just doesn't work. If some of the extremely frustrated console players were able to rid themselves of the idea that there was malicious intent behind it, it should be possible to imagine that FDev did their best until they had to face the bitter truth and realise that further progress for Odyssey was not possible with consoles in tow.

I am not saying that this was necessarily the case, I just think it is the much more likely description of what will most likely remain hidden to us forever. I can imagine months of heavy brainstorming, the extensive logging of which no one who is still quite right in the head would seriously demand. Nor do I think anyone would seriously want to read it.

I would say that the vast majority of comments I read here basically go from being as negative as possible to sometimes quite absurd and even insulting. When these same people then literally beg for pity, the line to understanding and empathy is crossed for me. All these strong feelings, anger, up to blatant hatred, and everything always up to the hilt... I sometimes wonder how these people want to express themselves when they are faced with the really serious problems in their lives?
I don't believe there's a malicious intent behind canceling console dev for EDO or EDH, nor am I implying that FDev didn't try their damn hardest to make it work. My main issue with FDev is the lack of communication. Now, I'm not expecting (nor demanding) FDev to give out detailed descriptions on their progress behind the scenes, all I'm saying is that an update post stating they've restarted console dev of EDO (halted Jul 2021 to prioritize fixing PC ver) or that they've met unexpected issues with console port or something like that would have been appreciated. Instead we got 'nothing to announce' and then boom, all console dev cancelled. Just leaves a frustrating feeling that we got blindsided. Again if this leads FDev to properly fix EDO, then it was a right solution. At least they didn't out right pulled the plug on EDH (and hopefully won't for a while)

I think you're over-egging your defence there, almost sounding a bit paranoid. Roots didn't even remotely suggest you had said you were spreading the old fake news thing.

Your second paragraph is just hysterical though, so cool your jets there capitano.

If you need eggs though, I imagine I can find someone to help.
Well, it was a direct response to my post and continued along the lines of "I see people on social media saying this", which I don't think is unfair to take as a slight accusation that I'm also saying this. I'll admit it got a bit of an emotional response out of me because I found the post generally argumentative and snarky - you can feel that energy even with just a text post.
I still have some eggs left in the fridge but I'll give you a shout out if I run out - maybe I'll go eat one now and take the throttle off my post button.

Thanks for the update.

Can we get clarification that this also means Odyssey will not be developed for PS5 and Xbox Series?

Greetings Commanders,

Elite Dangerous is a game close to my heart.

It’s no secret that Odyssey’s launch was less than ideal, including the need to split the PC/console player base to focus on a PC-only launch. Since Odyssey’s release in May 2021, we have worked tirelessly to improve the Odyssey experience on PC, and whilst we have made great progress there is still more to be done. We have been supporting the pre-Odyssey and post-Odyssey codebases since.

Over the last several months, we have been wrestling with the best way to move forward, and it is with a heavy heart we have decided to cancel all console development. We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this we need to focus on a single codebase. Elite Dangerous will continue on console as it is now together with critical updates, but we will focus on new content updates on PC on the post-Odyssey codebase.

We appreciate this news is not what our console community were hoping for. This was not an easy decision to make, but it was made with the long-term future of Elite Dangerous in mind.
I am an Xbox X player and although I am very disappointed that I won see odyssey on my platform I still love the game and have just managed to purchase my own fleet carrier so hope you'll keep Horizons going for us for along while as I still have allot to play for and when I can afford a pc I'll transfer to odyssey then great game. Phil

Yeah I see from the comments after my post that it was a misunderstanding, so write it off to the heat of the discussion - as people say, no harm, no foul.

I don't say that though, I just ask for stuphz. ;)

I hope you are able to get a PC and a transfer to Odyssey so you don’t have to do all that gameplay once again. Good luck 🤞

I've been out in the black since Odyssey dropped, waiting for PS4 news and avoiding the other forums as I didn't want to stumble on any spoilers. Was just journeying back home when I read this post, not sure for what purpose now as I am still a long way out. Will probably finish the journey, sell the fleet carrier and mothball my ships. I really thought ED was always going to be there for me, PS4 short term and PS5 longer term, but that door has now been closed, I guess I will wait for Bethesda Starfield and see how that works out.
o7 cmdrs, it has been a real pleasure, signing off now, over and out.

Feel Free to Share some Old Stories then.
Some other time.

Well Mate. If so many Games did this. Then give us some Examples.
Which Games have Abandoned a Major Part of their Playerbase by Closing their Servers, Wiping their Progess or Shut down Development for Console/OS with a Major Part of its Playerbase. And despite that Continued to be Alive and being Developed Actively to the Point of being Finished and Delivering the Promised Features and Upgrades?
You made the assertion, you go first.

3.
Well Mate. Thing is. PC might soon not warrant Continued Development either.
Thats the Point you know.
According to your 2c.

4.
Being Last Gen Consoles is frankly Irrelevant.
Playstation and Xbox tend to be Reverse Compatible. Which means the Code can be Adapted pretty readily.
And it would be fairly easy to just Release Future Versions like Odyssey for the Next Generation of the Respective Consoles.
Thus allowing Players to move on with these Games.
So that Argument is a NonStarter.
Not at all.

5.
Roots are Irrelevant to be Honest.
Sequels to Great Games can be Trash. And Entirely New Games can be Fantastic.
Especially if they are so far apart that the Dev Team is a Completely Different one to begin with.
There's a pattern here, I think.

Fallacy and a bit of an Out of Context Quote to be Honest.
My Post had a Bigger Explanation for a Reason.

Team Fortress 2 Halted Development. AFTER it was Finished and Fulfilled all its Promised Features.
Elite hasn't finished development.

There is no Advertisement for Team Fortress 2 Showing some sort of Future Developments to Sell the Game while Development was Stopped.
So?

This is not the same for Elite Dangerous.
Elite Dangerous for Consoles has Halted Development while being Unfinished and not having Fulfilled the vast Majority of the Promised Features.
So all these current MMOS on current generation hardware have versions for all the previous console generations too then?

Worse. These Promised Features are still being Advertised for Elite Dangerous all over the Internet. Selling the Game despite it not even being Developed anymore for Console.
They just announced it, what was released in the past will remain accordingly, though I'm sure current materials will be updated to reflect the situation. It's a rather shallow argument you're making here.

Pls. For a Proper Discussion. I would Ask you to Quote the Full Post. And not just Answer an Out of Context Passage of the Post.
Not in the mood for a big discussion as I know the argumentum ad nauseum factor of forum discussions is too much for some to resist, and I frankly can't be arsed. You've quoted no sources for your argument but you want me to do to the running around, sorry. No. The entire basis of your point thus far is a personal anecdote and a type of appeal to authority, and that's pretty much it.

@Bottom Hat how’s the Stuphz hoard going, I imagine you have no room anymore.

BTW, when I get to writing my farewell post in the coming days, there’ll be no stuphz from my end I’m afraid, unless you fancy a trip to Carcosa to collect my 4 billions worth of ships and modules from Robardin Rock, as that is their final graveyard.

I thought you bought Odyssey on PC also? Or was that just to test the water so to speak?

Edit - just saw your subsequent post, sorry.

I played both Elite 2 and FFE just fine without issues on performane with Atari 520ST in the 90´s, think I remember Atari version were praised as a best version of FFE by the computer gaming magazines, even better than PC port...

Pretty sure I played FFE on Amiga 500 also, later on.
Frontier: First Encounters was DOS only. You may be thinking of the original ports of Elite and Frontier: Elite which were on DOS, Amiga & Atari ST. Here is the timeline:

So admitt3dly Odyssey has made the game worse for those who purchased it? They WHY are they going to continually sink money into it AT THE EXPENSE of further developments for the console crowd? “Man, this new recipe is blander and has the side effect of making diners sh!+ themselves uncontrollably! Well, cancel the other dishes until we figure out our diaper salad!”

Talk about throwing good money after bad. The only way this is a good business idea is if they were looking to get out of the business altogether.
Admittedly for who? The person extrapolated to encompass all users of Odyssey who validates the rest of your argument it seems.

Jeez.
I've been reading some of these consolier posts. And it hit me.
What if pc were being binned and all my work... the grinds the relogs the mindless mining, the engineering grinds ship n foot.
100s if not 1000s of hours spent... spent, all gone.
This is not right.
Is there a precedent? A comparison?
It's cold and heartless with no regard at all for cmdrs who love this game, and have been binned for technical or otherwise, reasons.
Another commercial disaster!
And one that leaves alot of cmdrs out in the cold unable to play oddity as it progresses.
Daft!
I get that they wanna focus development on pc yeah sure but just caning consoles is wrong.

The question was asked initially about the servers being turned off and it was suggested that there would be a way to release it to the community to keep things running. Whether that will happen will only be known at that point, if and when it comes to pass. As for your PC save, as long as PCs are around and Elite is on it, there is no need to be concerned.

As a console player Odyssey didn't really bother me. I play Elite for the space aspect not FPS. If I wanted to play an FPS there are plenty on console to choose from. It would have been nice however to walking about my fleet carrier or even my ships. To stop all development is however still a slap in the face after all the grinding on and off over the last few years. There are still annoying bugs in Elite that have clearly been ignored for awhile that are clearly now permanent.

I think a migration path should be offered and as soon as possible for anyone able to jump ship. Should they wish to.

This thread has a lot support of PC players showing real solidarity towards console players which is nice to see not just the gleeful mocking of people who maybe cannot afford high end PCs to play a game on. To the clear PC elites looking down on console players saying you are holding the game back I would suggest you Google Xbox Series X pc gfx card equivalents. Then maybe you will see this is not a console not being powerful enough but more a company is struggling to get out of a hole they created by rushing a DLC out.
A budget laptop isn't an option here, but the options that will work are not at the super expensive end of laptops either, which is frankly misinformation spread by those who have agendas. My laptop is in the latter category and 0% payments spread over 6 or so months can potentially be affordable if the upfront cost is too much, it's what I did with my son's laptop.
