Newcomer / Intro Crystalline Shards

I mean while pressing the thrusters. I strongly suggest that you check all of the key bindings for any heading containing "Driving" and think about what they should do and whether you might need them or not.
I studied them all this evening! Like all the other things in ED I will just have to get used to the srv I guess. FYI I tried the thrusters loads of times too.

If they are working correctly you should be able to leave the ground as you are driving (except on high-G planets I reckon) when using the vertical thrusters. I'd posit that something is not working correctly if this does not happen.

Yeah, the fighter bays can remake multiple fighters, why can't the srv hanger
Fighters are just remote controlled drones so don’t need to be built well enough to keep even an NPC alive, the SRVs have to be built well enough to keep us alive as they are not remote controlled.

If I remember correctly there is a training mission involving the SRV available from your right hand panel, I suggest starting that not necessarily to find and scan something but to tune the controls until you are happy with them and especially get the basics of flying the thing sorted. Not mind you that I am any good at that myself.

Well here is another issue. I have landed at my next planet. But there is not enough clearance to get my SRV out. I cant go forward or backwards very much. And not enough to get out onto the surface properly?

Take off and pick a better landind spot
alternatively, you can dismiss the ship and when you recall - it will land in a good enough spot - but probably hundreds of meters away

This happens sometimes when you land in marginal locations, some ships are much more prone to the issue than others due to size of the ship, location and height of landing gear. It is sometimes possible to wiggle out but how is often not obvious.

Of the suggestions above I prefer to take off and find another landing spot as I don’t trust the ship to not find somewhere I cannot reach in the SRV or do something even more stupid and terminal.

I am trying to harvest materials from a low G and very very hilly planet area. I have cleaned up the flat areas. It is a real problem trying to get the last 12 items I need. I am having to thrust a lot to get out of tricky situations and it is overall not a very pleasant experience. Any advice?

Also I am due to come back here but there is very little left except for high up on the side of hills. So when I come back should I not bother here? There is another bio site on this planet that I havent been to yet.

Well looks like things got sorted by themselves. I am stuck fast against a crystalline cluster and cant thrust or move at all. Time to go vanilla methinks!

Luckily this is the last planet of this run and I need to go elsewhere for the next two materials. So ending up 100k away from these planets does not bother me now. It did last night when I got stuck.

I have to say that this is the first time I have been disappointed with ED. The terrain is too difficult to harvest materials. There are not enough reasonable ones and you have to go skidding and falling and crashing around to get any more materials. I dont mind a challenge but this is too difficult.

Is there a technique or more information that I am not aware of?

I cant get a screenshot because it is too dark.

For anyone trying to do the crystalline shards then this bio site should be missed. I only got 120 out of 150 and if it depletes for several weeks then the only stuff left is way up on the hillside (mountainside).

HIP 36601 C5A site 10. Perhaps site 6 will be better but I wont know until I come back.

When doing a DSS do you have to use 5 probes (1 back and 4 each side) or can you get away with less? I noticed an efficiency target of 2 so is that just front and back?

Less is best. You get more money i think if you use less or equal probes to the efficiency target. engineering your dss will help get you on target with the larger planets

Also I can confirm that when discovering a G4 raw material for the first time you only get 100 storage and need to relog to get the 150.

Quick tip if you get stuck and don’t have a spare SRV so you can self destruct the SRV and get back to the ship is to log off to desktop then log back in with basic Elite, not Horizons. As basic Elite doesn’t have planetary landings you will be put into orbit with the SRV back in the bay and all the mats you collected intact. Log out again and land at another site and continue. Had to do that at Guardian site when I drove over a pylon just as it came up leaving me stuck on top!

No need to self-destruct the SRV - just exit to desktop and start in non-Horizons - find yourself in orbit in your ship with your SRV in its bay.

I am surprised that self-destructing the SRV doesn't deprive you of it - magically reincarnating a SRV seems even more daft that the usual F D daftness.

Sorry didn’t make it clear. Don’t self destruct just log off and back on in basic Elite. If you self destruct you lose it.

Been there and done it. Those sites are hard. Best leave it and fly to another site and collect the rest there.

While I am here on this planet there is 3.1% selenium which I want to experience traditional prospecting for. How can I find it? Go to geo sites? What am I looking for to make it easier?
