DB interview in Variety.com from E3

updating borked or "not working as required by the players" (instead of what FDev intended) stuff doesn't count as a "free update" - you broke it, you fix it.

Oh and lets not forget all the missing stuff that should have been in the horizons package, but wasn't because they took 2 years to do it and it was starting to take the wee wee.

There was no stuff missing from the horizons package apart from maybe some multicrew roles, but they are coming in the Q4 it seems so a mute point. The told us what we were getting and we got it. Whether we like it or not or whether that is what they should have developed is neither here or there. They delivered what they said they would, a bit longer then they probably anticipated. Stuff happens.

I've read the entire article and I honestly don't understand why this thread has got so wound up. Maybe the second poster did this?

DB was giving an honest appraisal of the game market as he sees it at the moment, without commenting especially about how ED will be developed going forward. Too much reading between the lines here.

Nonsensce, he was answering a question spesifically about his space game ED, not a general musing
For clarity this was the question posed to him :

"
At the same time that “Jurassic World: Evolution” was in development, you’ve had some pretty solid success with “Elite: Dangerous,” which is a GAAS in a field where other games often fail. What do you think has been the key to success in that space for you?"

Another clue is his answer talks about space and aliens.

I know some folk will defend anything DB says, but he clearly claimed the expansions were free, there is no amibiguity in that statement.

Edit full paragraph added so context is clear:

"I think we were the first open-world space game, there were no other open-world space games when we commissioned the game and went to kickstarter. Being first was good, we have a very loyal following, we’ve added new content to the game continuously since it shipped. Our expansions have been free, and the things you pay for are just vanity items, which in a multiplayer game just makes sense. I think that’s worked well, and it’s that loyal fanbase, and the fact that there’s lots of things in the game for people to discover. We had aliens in the game and we didn’t announce them, we just let people discover them, and there was a lot of buzz around that."

Lol first open world space game? Under what pretense is he claiming that? ED's system model is MORE GATED AND INSTANCED than Eve Online's - every part of ED is a microbubble.

"Added new content since the game was shipped" - yes, that you charged people for, mostly.

"expansions are free" - NO they are not. absolutely not.

"We had aliens in the game and we didn’t announce them" - yes you bloody well did.

Quite a lot of lies or half truths there just in that paragraph alone.

Edit - Wolf - can you change the font and colour in your quotes please - they are black, and can't be seen with the black background and the font is tiny.

I just realized that besides David skipping on Horizons and LTP, what he basically confirms that FD lion share of ED money comes from cosmetics. So he underlines that's why they being able to roll out Beyond - cosmetics are enough to cover costs for both dev and infrastructure.

I personally view that as encouraging nugget of news. That would also explain constant discount on ED and EDH.

Mate - c'mon do us a favor and put that bulldung shovelling spade away huh?

Do you really think anyone would have PAID for what's in Beyond so far? - Or if they had SOLD Beyond as another PAID FOR DLC like Horizons, how many would be asking for a refund right now?

The money came from the tencent sale (17 million raised), the value of the shares rising by a massive TWENTY TIMES 0.96p > 19.83p each and SOME from cosmetics. Even if FDev had only 50 people working on ED it'll still cost well over £2,000,000 GBP or 500,000 cosmetics. (and £2mill GBP is a lowball figure, could easily be double that)

You think that's happening do you? 500,000 cosmetic sales per year, consistantly?

Seriously - I know you're not that stupid - think it through for just a moment and you'll see just how ridiculous your statement is.

Cosmetics is not the "lion share" by any means - 30 > 50% MAYBE.

When we were with big publishers, if there was a problem with a particular graphics card or some other issue, we couldn’t say “oh we’ll fix that.” It had to go through an approval process, with an answer taking two or three days, and people would be very angry. Whereas now we can respond within minutes, and say “oh, right, we’ll fix it.”

this made me chuckle a bit. :)

I'm not defending the erroneous "free" statement. I mean I bought in at premium beta and then Horizons, so approx. £140 in total.

Isn't that just astonishingly good value for money? 6 weeks in-game for £140 quid. £140 will barely give you a night out in London...

So rather than focusing on the money issue, why not celebrate the fact that a (relatively) small independent Cambridge-based games studio is having some good success against the big boys.

Do you really prefer 6 weeks in game to a night with a woman?

Taste are taste but...

i got a lot of respect for the man, for several reasons, but this reality disconnected ceo talk and boasting he is lately into are really depressing.

anyway, his lasts comments about industry trends in general are interesting, so thanks for sharing!

The full sentance would seem to suggest that nothing has been 'lost' he is claiming they are free and that it was always designed that way as a multiplayer game :

"Our expansions have been free, and the things you pay for are just vanity items, which in a multiplayer game just makes sense."

You know, except for the expansion that lets you increase the effectiveness of your ship by a factor of 10, it just made sense to charge for that.

“What I’m afraid of is a gold rush......” LOL

Taken way out of context but it was funny. I found the interview interesting. I like hearing how developers see things compared to how I see them.

To all the brain dead morons who are trying to claim that he was talking about the game going forwards, lets read what he actually said

"Our expansions have been free, and the things you pay for are just vanity items, which in a multiplayer game just makes sense."

Not "expansions will be," not "expansions are going to be," not "most of our expansions have," just plain old "our expansions have been free." Past tense, as in what has happened up to this point, not what will happen. It's clear as day.

And before you say he misspoke, the next half of the sentence clears up and doubt as to what he intended to say. "The things you pay for are just vanity items." Just. Vanity. Items. I guess all of horizons was vanity then? Of course it isn't. But what makes this lie really atrocious is what he says next, "which in a multiplayer game just makes sense." He is very clearly talking about paid content that gives you an edge vs other players. Yet engineers, a horizons only feature, gives you a massive edge over other players. There's no amount of mental gymnastics you can do to justify this, Braben is just flat out, 100% wrong on this point.

Now whether he is intentionally lying or just ignorant, I can't say. But either way its bad.

I didn't realize I was appointed as the ambassador to all brain-dead morons on the Internet. I'll make sure I get around to addressing the rest of you.

Didnt ye just appoint yerself?

Funny thing is that DB could kick a cute little puppy to death and some here would still tear each other apart in their rush to protect him...not sure thats a good thing to have but they will disagree no doubt. Most of these sorta debates dont end well...most of them dont even start well ^
