Development Update 1 - June

It's apprecaited to see what the plans are and the upcoming features for update 5.

Also, good to see confirmation that this is probably it (less any new fires spring up) till after the support fixes required for console post go-live in the autumn.
I can refocus on other games to play till after that time and hopefully pickup Elite again come winter.

I'm just glad to see the repeating terrain being acknowledged at least, which is more than I've seen so far. I honestly haven't played ED since the release of the first roadmap, glad to see more meat on this and I'll be following future development closely. I hope a solution is found. One of ED's core strengths has been its exploration and the idea of finding 'unique' planets that have only repeated terrain features is particularly depressing.

Not even a mention of the broken missions and the bugs that have persisted for 2 years to the megaships with impossible to complete attack scenarios. Even these things affect the BGS and no one between CM and DEV is taking the cue to fix all the crap left over from the days of Horizon.

Not a single mention of potential gameplay in Odyssey. WOW so much meat on the fire!

Bah....

Future Progress: The Longer Roadmap

As mentioned in our previous post, our aim was to focus on the initial set of updates and then turn our attention back onto console. There’s no doubt that the additional development work on these updates and community requests pose a challenge on our previous plans and timelines. We are actively investigating, reviewing, and remeasuring the further roadmap but these things will take a little time. We understand that this may not be as much information as people may have wished for, but we hope that the open and transparent nature of this update means that you’ll bear with us while we pull those together. What we can say, is that through these monthly updates, we will be able to share and keep you informed every step of the way.
So you're saying that at the moment you have no structured plan for the development of the odyssey and plans are constantly changing in a chaotic mess? well, at least that's fair, thank you for that.

That's very nice and I'm sure a lot of work, but enlightened to black dark side of bodies + max "lux" even when far from system star + max atmo light scattering for system star but not for the sky + ... breaks the 4th wall so much that I'm waiting for console lunch in hope lighting will be back to something consistent. Even psychedellic NMS doesn't break the 4th wall so much.
Anyway thanks for all the efforts. Regards

Does this mean it's reasonable to expect regular, weekly or bi-weekly updates to continue over the next month(s)?

I can only judge by the screenshots attached but I see as if the skybox was still too dark, compared to Horizons. Some of the main cockpit views are also just as dark as at release - I don't see any difference in the Cobra image (not the camera suit view but the main view, looking out the windshield). Will this remain this dark? Seriously, at least an optional cockpit lighting would be so nice to have.

While this dev update sure is great and gives answers to some of the most pressing questions a la where we are with planet-tech etc. I think it's a huge missed opportunity to lay out a rough roadmap for the future. I mean it was clear from the start that no new content comes in until the console release, but I would have liked something along the lines of:
  • We are considering new ships/srvs that tie into the story at some point, but there is no ETA just now
  • We want to expand the landable planets well into the thicker atmospheres, this however takes time and is not going to arrive anytime soon
  • ...
And so on, you get the point. I know you have to work on the big elephants in the room first, but some vague info about the direction we are heading would be nice.

If it's a "technical challenge", I'm pretty sure it won't be a "hotfix-class" update, but a "full-5to10-Go-Thursday-class" update.
The planet tech one is probably going to be exactly that, if an elegant solution is found!
The others may be not quite so major, but, being honest, I have no idea as games programming is not my forte - I must be one of the few non-AAA developers posting here ;)
