DLC20 Discussion (maybe, but why not?)

Hear me out: habitat snake. Python or Cobra.
I would scream cry and pass out this would be legendary news
I’ve already posted by wishlist. But I think it’s worth remembering there’s quite a few Indian subspecies that haven’t been mentioned too much here that are very possible (I hope we don’t get them though).

Examples:
  • Indian Wild Boar
  • Indian Wolf
  • Indian/Sri Lankan Leopard

As I said I’m hoping for: Ratel, LT Macaque, Blackbuck, Nilgai, Gaur, Fishing Cat and either the Himalayan Monal or Demoiselle Crane.

One animal I wouldn’t rule out as an oddball choice for Frontier is the critically endangered Pygmy hog. Seems right up their street (conservation status, little known, easy to clone but size makes it seem fairly unique).
they wouldnt do the boar because ever since the wolf they havent added a subspecies to a group already at species level, the leopard already faced serious controversy with the african leopard which released relatively recently so its unlikely but the wolf does hold some merit as being a group we havent seen since australia and would be the first specific representative from eurasia which alot of people have been asking for so as usual frontier will get the concept right but the species completely wrong.
I think Frontier is still going by the old taxonomic classification and not the more current, updated data.
The whole "Asiatic subpopulation" thing got reassessed in 2017, and so were tigers (which were now listed as having two subspecies: P. tigris tigris and P. tigris sondaica); yet, we still got two "obsolete" subspecies of tigers, namely Bengal and Siberian, which to my understanding are now simply considered populations...
Although with tigers it's a little bit messier because some scientists support the idea of six separate monophyletic clades (and therefore six subspecies).
Although not a cat, the dingo is another animal with extremely confusing taxonomy. Yet, that didn't stop Frontier from adding it, and using the outdated subspecies name Canis lupus dingo (while, according to current science, the dingo is merely a breed of domestic dog).
Taxonomy has never been an issue for Frontier. I don't think this is going to stop them from adding the Asiatic Lion under its former scientific name of Panthera leo persica

Edit: several zoos still use the old subspecies name; and it's not just smaller zoos either, as even London Zoo lists their lions as P. leo persica.

they go by the iucn im pretty sure since their range maps and species naming conventions align almost perfectly with that. The Iucn has the west african lion and the asiatic lion as populations not subspecies. However there is nothing stopping them from using the old naming conventions like real zoos do to specify which group they are talking about even if its not taxonomically accurate it is still a viable way of isolating the population in discussion which is why many zoos still do it,

Zookeeper had Spectacled Bear, Markhor, Pallas cat, Hamadrayas Baboon. It was a highlands pack for all intents and purposes.
Ok now that you brought it up like that, I'm starting to think we were supposed to end at Barnyard but the devs put a breather mask and is bringing back scrapped content and small fixes on animals for new packs.

The Indian Elephant is also relatively low in number. It’s mostly due to the fact that zoos just list their elephants as ‘Asian Elephant’ rather than a specific subspecies. So whilst the Indian Elephant IS a little more abundant in zoos, it still only has three holdings in North America according to zootierliste.
AFAIK the problem is that most of the captive population is not purebreed, they have mixed heritage from different subspecies. It's pretty much the same with giraffes, lions, European brown bears, "Bengal" tigers... Sad because that makes them less valuable for the conservation of their wild counterparts.

that was my thoughts too hopefully they get an updated look with the pack though.
Do you think a release date later than mid-June is likely here?

Why is the elephant so enraging though? I would love this pack and the fishing cat is at least a feline.
because its so painfully a clone its insulting.
  • no asked for it less than 5 votes for any asian elephant in 3 years of running the biggest player based survey
  • total holdings of all other asian elephant species dont even reach half of the indian at just over 50
  • it offers nothing new in terms of biome or large scale regional diversity if its the srilanka that even worse
  • if the pack is indian themed then why are they including a new elephant when we already have the indian if its the srilankan then thats just going to cause geopolitical arguments.

The more packs we get the more chance we get of an antarctica pack bringing home this beautiful handsome man

They NEVER showed in all the almost 20 DLC Key Arts an animal or its silhouette that was not in the pack.
We need to admit we'll have a reskin of the Indian Elephant.
bison in arctic and dromedary scenery in africa prove it has been done before and exactly like the arctic situation the elephants could very well be there to set theme of the pack.
Or maybe... Here's my theory.
DLCs for Console always come in bundles of two.
Last year, Frontier was busy catching up with the PC releases, and spent most of their resources on porting DLCs over to console. So, in 2024, Console edition got all of PC edition's DLCs, while PC got two new packs (Barnyard and Zookeeper).
These new packs have now been released on Console as a single bundle, meaning that now Console Edition is fully caught up with PC...
...except for Americas.

Now, PC is getting a new pack, which will most likely be released to Console in a bundle together with Americas. So, I think that we're actually back to our usual "4 packs every year" format, which for console translates to two new bundles every year.
I don't know how long this will last, probably only this year, or two years if we're lucky, but I personally think we're on our way to get another three packs (including South Asia)
given that next year they will have 3 cms games running at once one very likley being pz2 I doubt the trend will continue for than just the end of this year at most.
I mean, what other caprines could they add from this region? We already got the two main ones that most people wanted, and I doubt they're going to include something like Bharal or Siberian Ibex

EDIT: I underestimated India's caprine diversity by a long shot.
I say this as a caprine fan: we may be screwed.
The tahr is the biggest gap I see for caprines in this region and is one of if not the most captive non domestic caprine in my region.
what are the chances of we getting a free update with the pack?
we always do technically but since the last one was literally a single set of fake looking flowers dont get your hopes up

Personally, whilst I also think that the switch might have been because there were less packs and they wanted to appease both builders and animal-focused players; I'd say it depends on this pack.If it's another pack in the same vain as the ones we had so far, I believe they're probably going to keep this setup as it then probably is a very profitable setup for them.

I'd say there are signs that it might be like that, because on the key art we can already see a new plant wrapped around the Indian column on the right. It's not much to go on, most of the other scenery stuff is way in the back so it's too early to really guess if there's more new scenery in the key-art; but at least there already is some.

So yeah, even if we're moving back to 4 packs this year, I'm still assuming we're in this new format until the end.
I mean the writing was on the wall for a while people were slowly getting over the idea of scenery in favour of more animals to fill up the roster so Im not surprised the change happened but given how upset we have been every time the new pack doesn't have exhibits we might see one who knows.
Personally I can understand the feeling of not wanting the yak, but for me it's because we got the wild water buffalo - the exceedingly rare wild form of a far more common and versatile domestic form - and I imagine they'd do the same thing with the yak.

But, as said, I'd take it over an elephant. Of all the 'copy-paste' animals they could have chosen, why another elephant?
the wild water buffalo is an impressively bad pick its one of 4 ingame animals not currently in captivity and one of 2 that have never been.
The Indian Elephant is also relatively low in number. It’s mostly due to the fact that zoos just list their elephants as ‘Asian Elephant’ rather than a specific subspecies. there are just about as many indian elephants as there are generic 119 vs 143 so while yes your technically correct comparing 23 to 119 is a bit wild srilankan is rare when compared to the indian elephant.

Would be funniest as hell if those elephants we see are just decorated/golden indian statues as part of building pieces :DD they are next to a bunch of other build pieces after all...

What does it add to the game that we don't already get from the Indian Elephant? The African Forest Elephant would be more unique, as would any number of other possible clones or reskins that could have been added. Honestly, the addition of another Asian Elephant subspecies would make the inclusion of the Himalayan Brown Bear or the second wildebeest look good in comparison...

Does anyone know of any mixed enclosures in real life with lion-tailed macaques? It would be nice to make something like that, I am more familiar with it for other Indian monkeys like rhesus macaques and hanuman langurs.
