Here, these are for you:

Use them wisely.

Well that's silly because you can't do that: https://support.elitedangerous.com/kb/faq.php?id=92

You can only buy them via the Store, with non-Steam funds.

Well, when I click "Checkout" on the FD store (if I use my Steam link to login) - it takes me to my Steam Wallet, funds and all - to pay for what I just put in my Cart.

Also, from your link;

" You can buy additional content using your Steam wallet though our Steam store here: https://steam.elitedangerous.com/ "

Overall steam is a good thing for Elite Dangerous, because it has brought FD new customers and income.
And every old player as me who write a positive review on steam is helping to interest more people for this game.
If only one buy the game for 49€ because of my review 34€ is getting to Frontier (if the 30% are true).
And i now had to buy at least 19 of the vibrant and tactical skin packs to negate this profit via the "steam tax".
And of course, FD would then still make about 79€ on my skin purchases then.
And if this new steam customer is getting one to also buy a copy because of steam this whole calculation would be further useless.

So don't get too upset about it. In Reality it might not matter that much.
If you don't see any advantage in steam and don't want that key, super.
If you use the steam option, go there and write a positive review. Who knows what of those both ways might the better thing for Elite in the long run.
I think even the "currently mostly played" stats on steam might be a good advertisement. So i'm not too sad about the use of the steam key.

Why am I required to support Frontier any more than I already have? Braben has his OBE, so I correct that to Sir Braben. if Frontier makes something I want to buy, I'll pay for it. So far, I've already purchased everything I want from them. They have my 60 clams plus a bit from Rollercoaster Tycoon III. If Frontier folds up tomorrow (provided I have my STEAM key), I say we both will have got our money's worth. I owe Sir Braben zilch. I am sure he considers exactly the same about me, if he even thinks about that.

Bought my copy through Steam vs. the FD store, simply because practically everything I play that's not a roguelike is already through Steam. I'm happy with their product, have been for years. Also happy with their download speeds, which I hear can be a problem elsewhere.

Given FD must have done the numbers before deciding to put the game on Steam I would imagine they realise on Steam = More Money so I wouldn't worry about FD losing out on you getting a Steam key..

I think it's more, for whatever reason, people worrying about FD 'losing' money from future store/expansion sales. If it makes them feel better by boycotting Valve, well, that's fine.

~22 million dollars revenue (to FD) generated from around 500k sales as of last month and this is not nearly a finished product... These guys put in 8 million dollars of their own money, then received an additional ~3 million USD from backers. They are doing fine. If they want more support... then finish the game.

Thanks For letting me know they added this ability. Not paying a penny more till I can land on a bloody planet like I could with the old elite. I now have my steam key!

its early and I cant be bothered to read the whole thread yet but, what if FD gave the ability to gift items with a key you can redeem on your main account? that way you could just make another account, buy items from store giving them full profit and you gift the item to your other account. I recall my account having an option to redeem keys or something.
I dunno, far too early to be typing, I need coffee. that been said, at the end of the day FD are happy that people redeem a key for steam or they wouldn't have done it. I mean, this whole I demand a steam key rant that happened. it took ages for them to sort out and strike a deal, yes people were moaning it was taking too long but at any point all they had to do was say NO we wont be giving steam keys due to steam wanting further cuts from future sales on our store page. no doubt most of the people wanting those keys would have said fair enough we understand, I would have. as Fire70 said above, serious number crunching must have been going on for them to decide it was the right move to take.

Well that is crap, I get if a customer bought the game initially through Steam, but legacy customers? Even if they buy through the FD store and not Steam?

I've updated my first post, due to Ed's latest post:
edit: Breaking news! Ed gives what I suspect is his final reply on this subject:
I feel a bit crude talking about 'cuts' and 'percentages' but yes, once you've linked an account, any future purchases on the FD store are affected by this.
While it's still a bit evasive, if taken with all the previous statements from Frontier, it appears that all sales from ED's store (including cups, t-shirts & other physical goods!) will be subject to a cut from Valve. For anyone asking for further clarifications: Pretty sure you won't get one, without Frontier upsetting Valve.

I also striked-out my speculation that Valve's cut doesn't apply to physical goods, since it seems it probably does.

I guess I agree with this. I paid sixty bucks for a flagrantly unfinished product, the only guilt I feel toward giving money to their advertiser too is centered around the fact that I took a risk on paying an AAA+ price tag and once again let myself get duped into a doing this.

This game should have been up on Steam as an Early Access title if the company is concerned with generating future revenue for development. Instead they purvey it as a finished product, and it takes relatively little playtime to realize that if this is all it will ever be, it's either not finished or is a very poor finished product----I'd prefer to believe the former because the potential is astonishing.
