Do NOT get a "free" Steam key if you want to support Frontier

I guess I agree with this. I paid sixty bucks for a flagrantly unfinished product, the only guilt I feel toward giving money to their advertiser too is centered around the fact that I took a risk on paying an AAA+ price tag and once again let myself get duped into a doing this.

This game should have been up on Steam as an Early Access title if the company is concerned with generating future revenue for development. Instead they purvey it as a finished product, and it takes relatively little playtime to realize that if this is all it will ever be, it's either not finished or is a very poor finished product----I'd prefer to believe the former because the potential is astonishing.

That doesn't wash. The game was NDA-free from day 1 of its alpha in Dec '13, every milestone was reviewed, there were thousands of videos on YT way before release.
If you pre-order that's your risk, if you don't do your homework that's your risk. This wasn't some closed door development with the occasional marketing bullshots.

Can't give you rep yet as it doesn't work on mobile, but this is exactly true

Well that is crap, I get if a customer bought the game initially through Steam, but legacy customers? Even if they buy through the FD store and not Steam?

This was discussed to death in the steam-keys-mega-thread.

Frontier made it clear (as clear as they could given the, then ongoing, negotiations) that there were ongoing costs to issuing legacy keys. Some rabid steam fanboys (not all) denied this and accused Frontier of lying. After linking the account it was clear that Steam would take a cut of paintjob sales and other "in-game" purchases and DLC, even if people mistakenly thought they could circumnavigate Steam's cut by going direct to frontier.

There were constant accusations of tinfoil-hat wearing against anyone who mentioned Steam's cut being applied to legacy owners.

I will not be using a steam key.

me and my friend both did steam keys and would gladly do it again even know this this whole thread doing nothing but trying to make ppl feel bad for using one if steam was taking 75% of a cut then i could get this thread but 30% off a 17$ paint job give me a brake..........

Without Steam Frontier could be selling it for $40 now and Frontier would still make the same money. That's what Steam does, keeps the prices high.

Do you think Steam do enough work to earn their $5.10 for that paintjob? Do you not think that would be better going to future development?

Distributing via Steam was a good move imo. There are couple of players in my country i met in game that told me they bought the game because they saw it on steam (and they never heard of ED before). However, i wont be generating steam key though as i want all of my $$$ spent on ED to go to FD.

Its a shame I have already linked my steam account, so can't go back now.

I'd create a new account and buy mugs tshirts books etc anything that i don't use in the actual game itself using that account.
At least for those products, steam won't get a cut.

All game related goods such as skins, add-ons, the game or any other DLC content for the game. I will purchase through my normal account, so steam will only get a cut on game related purchases.

Wish i had know sooner.

NO ONE is trying to making anyone feel bad for getting a Steam key. At least I'm not: I just want to be sure people get a Steam key after knowing ALL the facts. It's then up to them if they still wish to get a key.

I do NOT blame anyone for getting a Steam key. Everyone's circumstances is different, and everyone has there own values as to what is important. If you got a Steam key: Great, I hope you enjoy using it. You might even generate some extra sales for Frontier, as other people (friends) may see you playing ED on Steam :)

I myself may *eventually* get a Steam key, since I'm a Kickstarter backer with a Lifetime Expansion Pass for ED (so I'm not likely to spend much more on ED). But I'm not in any rush, especially as I haven't yet felt the need to buy any paint jobs (but might eventually, especially if Frontier add a proper external view like Elite 2 & 3 had).

Even though i have many games on steam, i am playing elite dangerous quite happily without it.. i simply do not need ED to be sat inside my steam client. Why on earth would I? So thats how i'm going to keep it.

I did my homework, thanks. Fanbois have pumped up the Steam review to the point that it is outright fiction, YouTube videos are not made with a portrayal of a poor or unfinished product. Consumers are notoriously biased as either drastically vapid fanbois or purely negative. Nary a review site exists at this point that isn't flagrantly bribed---virtually all of them gush over titles who have obviously paid for a good review or panned it based on a lack of kickback. Because of this any homework done still carries a significant risk.

There is no reason I should have to review a video game product to a degree greater than a new car purchase in order to determine whether or not they are charging full finished price for an unfinished product anyway. It's been a bane in this industry for two decades at this point and still happens. The fact that anyone believes you SHOULD have to do such a thing just underscores how brainwashed the masses have become to this accepting this practice.

It's not finished, threads like this back that up---even those desperate to "support the developers" do so because they are worrying about developer dollars because they want them to finish the thing. Early Access is the Steam category for knowingly purchasing unfinished games. It's existence is intended to display an honest representation of what you are purchasing WITHOUT doing an idiotic amount of research just to determine if a developer bothered to finish their product or not before release. It's where this should have been placed when it went on there.

But all of this is ok, and you are absolutely right---I did carry the risk all on my own, accepted it and own it. But I'm not going to blow sunshine and rainbows up anybodies tailpipe. I took the risk and wound up with less than I'd hoped for, and believe that though an option existed to be up front with me, through a certain level of dishonesty it was not taken. As such, I'm entirely unconcerned about an commissions incurred over the course of attempting to market a product.

speaking of reviews im not going to recommend this game on steam just because of this thread and how alot are up in arms over a 30% cut before this thread i would have gladly recommend this game even bought it for my long time friend but not any more

I'd have never bought skins without a Steam account as you can essentially get them for "free" by trading in the steam marketplace and playing other games.

FD made more money from me once i got a steam key regardless of Valves cut.

So the thread title is basically wrong.

Of course if someone isn't entirely happy with that game and feels like it is a unfinished product they have all rights not to care about it.
This whole thread is only living to inform those who really like the game and want to support FD and the further development at 100%.
Of course nobody debt FD anything if they have bought the game already. But some people want to write reviews and recommend this game
because they really like it. Thats all about personal taste. Don't know how some can read this thread other then that...

That is the oddest and most incomprehensible piece of "reasoning" that I've seen on these forums for a long time.

So you would continue to recommend it if Steam's cut was 75%? It seems logic has failed.
