Do we have a ETA on the cure for the beige plague?

I'll just leave this here - I'm sure we've all seen this video before (if not skip to 7:30). It's really sad that we've gone from this in 2013, to a whole lot of beige in 2017 (yes, I know if you want to split hairs, a lot of the worlds show in the video are atmos. worlds, with Earth-likes and Io-likes still having colour in game, but the vid does show some concepts that look a lot better than how things ended up...) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEVutbSqBI0.

OK, they are working/discussing/planning (pick which you believe) a new materials system, but in the meantime, if there *ARE* different materials on the surfaces of worlds, and those materials affect texture colours, can someone please just change some RGB codes somewhere, and give us something not so uniform? Also, why on (or off) Earth can ice worlds have variation (and deep canyons and striations), but HMCs, not? Surely ice worlds, with subsurface scattering and whatnot, would be a bigger performance hit than metallic ones?

Yep, the live game has never met the level of expectation that was set back in the alpha days. What's worse is how many planets have regressed due to 2.2 rather than progressed, we've gone backwards in overall planet detail on a macro level instead of forwards.

The real question I'd absolutely love to know the answer to is: what happened? Clearly Frontier at one time had an excellent handle on planet generation, I mean the planets in the old videos would give Space Engine a run for it's money, maybe even outdo it completely. Frontier at one time had done a possibly "best in industry" job of it, yet planet gen was downgraded massively for a reason. They didn't just do it to make things less interesting or less realistic. Was it performance reasons? Was it because of the console versions? It's a terrible shame in any case.

Look at when the reply came. If I was a betting man, I'd have a tenner on it having been a standing joke in the office for the last week that one of them would reply if it hit 100 pages... :D
I bet they had a round of rock, paper, beige to determine who would post the reply. Paper covers rock, beige destroys rock's will to live and beige turns paper beige so beige wins! :D :p

Can you stop making your opinions as facts and then draw false conclusions?

Planet generation as revealed during Horizons preorder looked worse than we currently have it. Heck, many people complained about various things on planet surface not being good enough. Then they complained that there are nerfs. Then etc. etc. etc.

While actually what devs do is treading carefully while trying to do improvements in performance. If you one of those "ohh, I got everything running smoothly" well there are many people who didn't. Also considering that FD just adds more and more things to see to surface that matters as well.

Planets definitely look better, sans color scheme - 2.3 added way more details on planets which I like very much. There were discussions about this issue some time ago and devs acknowledged they want to improve situation and make them look better, but it will take considerable rewrite which will most likely will be tied with bigger update than 2.3 or 2.4. Features in game depends on each other and yeah, it sucks, but it isn't something you can easily tweak or fix just outright.

So stop this drama queen scene. Yeah, you might not like it. But doesn't mean there's some 'downgrade', or another kind of nonsense going on. This is a huge game with huge, complex issues to solve.

Now all we need is another 100 pages discussing ... lol discussing ... this 100 pages theory before Dale will either confirm or deny this turn of events.

So Dale, you game? I'm game.

So stop this drama queen scene.
Do you realize that by calling it a "drama queen scene" you are creating a drama queen scene?

I mean it's fine by me, I love irony, I just like to see us all on the same page.

edit: Illustration on cue! Well oiled machine here.
Can you stop being the ED Apologist poster boy?

Sheesh! Your 24/7 fanboyism is beyond irritating.
Appreciate it!

A thread dedicated to the beigification of the planets? I just want you all to know that I actually found a rather adorable little icy planet last night that was a crisp khaki color, so they're out there, you just have to look harder for them.

Now boys - be nice.
edit; ok, quite unfair.

Hi Ian, how lovely to see you! How are you doing? :)

Icy planet eh?

Yeah ... good to see you too Jasey!

Ummmm, but there has been a change (if you don't want to use the term downgrade - fine, but I'd struggle to not think of it as such) in terms of graphics to improve performance. Dale said so here.

The issue is a complex one that - from what I understand discussing with the development team - was initially intended to improve the game's performance.

Yeah ... good to see you too Jasey!

Wait, is that your way of questioning my exploration "street cred?" I thought all of the cool explorers talked in planetary type shorthand!

*But also "khaki,"
get it?*

I'm afraid I've already cursed this thread by invoking the-issue-that-must-not-be-mentioned ... *cough* FAS/FDS cockpits *cough*...

FDev physically can no longer see this thread I'm afraid. Whenever a thread that I am in starts spawning the words "FAS" and "cockpit" more than 3 times the forum's in-built programming immediately blocks FDev from instancing with the thread ever again. It's like the reverse of Rumpelstiltskin ...

And there was at least one megathread in the 2.2 Beta praising the planetary upgrades.

You were doing well until the moment you said there is such a thing as a cool explorer.

Plus the shorthand is: The IP, I SC to and PN'd on, was like quite unspectacular. Fo shizzle. Told you ... no such thing.

And as my girlfriend deducted on seeing my ... condition when I got home .. no ... I don't get it.

It enlisted in the French foreign legion because the system it occupied had no career opportunities and no circus passing by, which severely limited it's options?
Fine thanks. Just passing through, looking for which planet I need to visit in the system I'm in for a thargoid wreck.
I'm not Thargoid, but we could go for a drink for roughly the same experience.

Well, that put my feet firmly on the ground. I've been so obsessed with this beige thing, and so egocentric I didn't take into account those who had no response from FD on their pet peeves as opposed to a couple of vague remarks.

I'm feeling your pain brother.

To myself, and to many other players, 2.2 was an overall downgrade to 2.1. That is our opinion, I never stated it as a "fact", it's subjective. You might prefer the better textures of 2.2 but I personally prefer the better planet variety in both colors and terrain features from 2.1, and I'd take the old engine over the new in a second. To me, 2.2 was an overall downgrade, and it has made the game much worse to play.

And the only one stirring up drama by calling various people names here is you Eagleboy, repeatedly I might add. Your opinions are not always facts either, so might I prescribe a healthy dose of looking in the mirror for you?
