Do you want Planet Type DLC

Many people got bored with the current barren worlds. What if they release new planet types as DLC for example:
  1. Icy planets
  2. Rocky planets
  3. High metal worlds
  4. Metal-rich worlds
  5. Ammonia
  6. Water worlds
  7. Earth-like worlds
  8. Gas Giants
A Planetary Approach Suite is required for access to all planets of that type in the galaxy. There would be new biomes such as: lush, exotic, scorched, toxic, marsh, irradiated, volcanic. Which features should be included per planet type and would you buy it?

I don't think that would be possible, technically. What about planetary POIs, exobiology, settlements and so on? If the procedural generation of a planet depends on a DLC, that would surely mess things up. We've already seen those changes with Odyssey. And although Ody was years in development, they have not managed to retain the coordinates of the various locations.

#6 and #7 I'd buy without second thought. #8 sounds interesting.
To make it interesting, you'd have to have some game-play coming along with it, like e.g. creature hunting, detailed cartographing (not just DSS), urban activity (delivery, search, sight-seeing, assassination). It would also be an opportunity for vessels outside of the usual ship/SRV category: submarines, bikes, planes, regular cars. With gas giants you could have buoyancy-type vessels and/or stations, as well as atmo-analyzing/probing.
But even if it is just landing and walking around a landscape, #6 and #7 would be worth it. Now don't get me wrong: not for any price, should be <200€ in the basic edition.

Hi :)

🤔...6, 7 and 8 would be my pick out of the ones you've provided for DLC.
I would imagine that if these were bundled together as a paid for expansion it would be an instant success.

Back to reality....Water worlds would probably be a more realistic feature though (to start with) as this would be a (natural?) precursor to most of the others. A more detailed atmosphere for Gas giants. Gas giant 'clouds' were mentioned pre release of the game as were atmospheric clouds (and a short video) on earth like worlds atmospheres too. I'm presuming at the time it was mentioned there were initial thoughts that it would be one of the many next steps.

I suppose some more detailed programming could be attempted with the first four in your list, as to how detailed would be dependant on what is intended, and how much it would benefit in the sense of more added gameplay.

Basically speaking, whichever item one chooses from your list they have a tendency to naturally overlap into the others. Rocky planets for example, we have those now in the game, the next question is how accurate do you imagine they need to be?
Rocky planets with water?....Or better detailed / structured geology?
When trying to introduce a more detailed geology then one really has to include some form of erosion (if any) would it be wind, or to go another step some form of liquid erosion (it doesn't always mean water), this is what I mean by 'overlap', one feature will tend to encompass other features to be more realistic.
What's the cut off point between one feature to another.

All those features on your list are already in the game. The real question is which of those features on your list could be expanded upon without necessarily affecting the other ones.
The other important question surrounding this sits squarely on the Developers. Is the cost of 'upgrading' any of these listed features worth doing in the long term.

Jack :)

A paid expansion for more types of worlds to explore would be a guaranteed buy for my alts for me, as well as the purchase of ARX for my main, since I have an LEP. All I've ever wanted from Elite Dangerous to reach a rough parity with Frontier: Elite 2, before expanding upon other aspects of the game. As much as I like certain aspects of Elite Feet in Odyssey, it wasn't the on-foot content that made it worth adding Odyssey to my alts.

1 through 4 should be in Odyssey already.

5 through 8? FD could, if they really wanted to concentrate their recourses on each one, would be acceptable as individual DLC's. I'd buy each of them. Hear that, FD? Cha-ching, if you want it.

No matter if separate or bundled DLC, I would definitely buy them. Exploration is my main occupation in Elite and I hope that after Thargoids, BGS/PP 2.0 and colonization, we explorers will get some love from FDev :)

1-4 are already in the game, but without heavy atmospheric effects and liquids/winds/etc. Adding weather effects, storms and how all that affects the ground, various liquid substances in liquid form, and more importantly flight model - would be very cool! and a stepping stone for other planet types in one way or the other.

5-8 are the juice of all of it. Of course yes, if for nothing else but to "I'm on a boat!" and a Cloud City.

Don't see it realistically possible as anything other than expansion/DLC. Not only I would buy it, but it would also be interesting to see dev videos, progress and discussions over the years it would take to develop it!

We have type 1 and 2 without the atmospheric effects and liquids. 3 High metal worlds need metallic ores near the surface. 4 Metal-rich requires volcanism, liquid erosion, and lots of metal on the surface.

A paid expansion covering them all would be reasonable.

There is no way they could release 1 expansion with all these planet types. Realistically is to release DLC per planet type. When all types are released it could be sold as a bundle (expansion).

I would pay for a quality DLC extending the galaxy, planets would have to have unique features though and not be the same old barren, simple height maps with some colour variation.

Honestly though - is anyone here still convinced they have the staff to develop it? Would've thought that key personnel who were familiar with the planet gen tech probably left the company a while back.

Light atmosphere is currently available on a lot of worlds.

From my search for interesting systems for Colonisation candidates, as of right now:

  • There are a lot of landable Rocky, Rocky Ice, Icy planets, both without any atmosphere and with light atmosphere.
  • There are a lot of High metal content planets, landable, with light and without Atmosphere. Most of them look like Rocky planets with more rusty colours.
  • There were a couple of Metal Rich landable, but they are basically the same as High metal content, but with bigger metal % in text description.
  • Almost all Metal Rich planets are non-landable, I assume it is most likely because of extreme temperatures, thicker/currently unsupported atmosphere, and/or magma/volcanic activity that is not in the game yet.
  • For all of these - there are variations with thicker Atmosphere, clouds, storms, different compositions of Atmosphere, all non-landable.

Yes, all of that needs to be expanded to have a full availability of each of those worlds as they exist in the game - weather conditions, ground conditions, liquids and substances, flight mechanics, driving mechanics, affects of various substances on ship/shields/etc.

But we already have these types in the game, in their chopped down version so to say. And all that tech, albeit being important for these type - is much more important baseline for any other planet type.

And then there is water and underwater...

There is no way they could release 1 expansion with all these planet types. More realistically is to release DLC per planet type. When all types are released it could be sold as a bundle (expansion).
Simulation of planets is important, immersive and fun for many players, but I doubt that without gameplay it would be that important for majority of players.

1-3 would have exactly the same gameplay as we have now. 4 can have extra with magma-analysis, atmospheric analysis and various other analysis gameplay, but aside from that - same gameplay we currently have + cool screenshots + very cool racing through the storms on all 4 and with volcanoes and magma on 4th. It doesn't really look like a DLC level content. As an Early Access approach - maybe, at least if it would not perform very well, it could still be salvaged for Gas Giants (maybe Maelstroms were a precursor for that too) and floating settlements there with some new gameplay for that, which could lead to bigger developments.

Also 1-4 are really good for a combination with Colonisation, as there are Terraformable Rocky and High Metal content worlds a plenty, and EA for them + Colonisation monetization could work nicely, but all new gameplay would be for/from Colonisation at this point, so meaningful results are questionable for any player that interested in open-world/space game Elite.

5 would have good content only if it was bundled with Thargoids civilization close-up and personal. And that leads us to the part where actual new and interesting gameplay is possible - Water Worlds, Earth-like worlds - both require tech from previous types to build upon, and there is a huge amount to build.

So, either the whole thing as an Expansion/DLC, or first (easier) part as Colonisation + Early Access, the rest as a DLC if the first one is good to bring the money in.

I'd also like to see those features, but we've had barren planets since Horizons (2015). Odyssey upgraded the planet tech, yet it's still 99% empty with a few settlements and flora. It took several years to launch Odyssey. The sales are not as high as expected. They cannot deliver lush worlds with loads of new gameplay in a short timeframe afaik. Maybe they're secretly developing new planet DLC though.

People should lower their expectations to a minimum with Fdev. If we gain access to richer planet types with water, lakes, rivers, oceans, clouds, rain, lava, magma, storms, erosion, forests, fauna I would pay a premium for that. Deeper gameplay and content would be a bonus. New planet types could offer more colonization options (buildings, resources, mining etc).

They need to be added in a way that is as consistent among the playerbase as possible IMO. The best way to do that is to release it as an paid expansion. I think the best use for DLC in relation to activities in the game (barring new ships etc..) would be to release mini-story based mission packs.

this doesn't really go with that

:D
Creating all that is, in my opinion, an insane level of difficulty to develop. As E:D is as scientific as possible simulation of a galaxy, there are a lot deeper and more complex logic to procedurally spread out assets than for example NMS. Even right now, after years of Odyssey - there are still severe bugs with planetary tech. Now imagine the level of complexity to simulate water, lakes, rivers, oceans, clouds, rain, lava, magma, storms, erosion, forests, fauna... you could also add a big game hunting many are talking about to that while we're at it, hehe

Something tells me that Frontier won't sacrifice that immersive & accurate simulation just to add pretty pictures.

Deeper gameplay and content would be a bonus.
On that I disagree. It is a game. Gameplay has to be there, otherwise it would be a huge investment to develop something that would only allow for players to take pretty pictures and not much else. All those memes about "mile wide inch deep" would come back with never seen before ferocity.

Yep, that's why I've said initially - Not only I would buy it, but it would also be interesting to see dev videos, progress and discussions over the years it would take to develop it!

Doubt that. But what they could be doing, with any future feature of the game - is to streamline and prepare parts of what's there for possible future additions and developments. If there are long term plans for Elite, of course developers could create prototypes of things, just to test ideas and pinpoint pain points in a more practical way. But any of that is nowhere near even ready-for-alpha state. Realistically, that's the best case scenario.

New planet types could offer more colonization options (buildings, resources, mining etc).
From what is knows right now, Colonisation could lead for Planetary improvements and expand to a more complex planetary environments. To me it looks pretty obvious, but only if to take into account the whole CMS experience of developers, engine and possible reusable code. And if Colonisation was successful, then maybe there wouldn't be a need for EA for 1-4, and these planet types would happen (maybe not to the fullest extent) as parts of Colonisation feature evolution, maybe even 8 (GGs) is a possibility.

The only problem I see with that - Heavy incline in CMS gameplay, and only a copy of existing open-world/space gameplay - not really my cup of tea. There will be Frontier Unlocked in a few weeks, maybe we would see if speculations like that have any merit.

5-7 is most definitely an expansion/DLC level content years and years of development away, or sacrifice that scientific simulation and do it quicker, but I don't see how it would make anything better as this simulation of our huge galaxy is one of the main features of Elite.

I look forward to "Warning: Landing gear deployed" when we try to land on a water world and forget that we're supposed to keep the hull sealed 😁
(Fail to do that right and the ship floats too low in the water, waves washing over canopy, and you can't exit the ship until you seal the hull and wait for pumps to restore proper floatation)

Ammonia worlds could be ocean worlds the same as water-worlds (different fluid) maybe more cloud / lower visibility, so that would allow two new world types from one new "ocean" technology. Minor caustic damage from ammonia worlds would allow existing anti-caustics modules or repair limpets to serve double duty as exploration/exobio equipment.

This in turn opens up the possibility of a new amphibious SRV type, if floating biomass offers mats, whereas if they offer exobiology then a convertible-top or open-top vehicle would be needed

That raises problems of launch/docking, given that if the ship is floating then the docking area is likely underwater. That could be solved with animation (your SRV bobs to the surface and the docking area is on the surface behind the ship, which will pull you back in from there) or perhaps landing gear deploys huge inflatables. I think I'd just handwave it away with the bob-to-surface approach

Water/ammonia worlds might also be suited to large lifeforms (whales/leviathons) that can be ship or srv hunted, because the animal can go under the surface - out of sight out of range - allowing for a simpler system to convey a more complex one (and imply an entire planetary ecosystem out of sight). No terrain-foot locomation issues, less pathfinding, etc. Their meat is a Rare Commodity, because we're awful like that 😁

Once water worlds have brought systems to do more complex clouds and atmospherics, then gas giants can be handled (or vice versa). Different types could had floating scoopables, caustic damage, ...jumponium scooping?
