Do you want Planet Type DLC

David Braden apologised for the state of Odyssey on release.

That was the post explained why, exactly, my machine at the time was having no issues, even though so many people were.

david bredon is removed from everything in elite he dosent existe anymore so his own comments are irrelevent. he sayd the game runs well on his 980 pc. at that time the gpu was 6 or 8 years old..... again he apologised for no reason.
ok then ... you know better than David Braben!

PS Horizons And esp launch game DID run superbly well on a gtx 980. hell at launch I was playing in VR (albeit a DK2) on a gtx 670 for a short while and it was playable

When I run Ody @ 3440x1440 on my montior @ ultra settings, it keeps a nice 144fps mainly the not good times are ody related. BUT the flicker of shadows and the poor antialias is still very prominent.
When I run it on VR Quest 2, I have to drop the Quality down massivly because of the shadow flicker and Anti alias flicker and doing on foot is just too janky to put up with.
Its very noticeble when your in open on foot fighting a commander. Its just too fps laggy to be playable.
Ive never watched Yamiks again, after the first few seconds of the one video I watched. So i dont agree with that comment.

The diffrence of Horizons and Ody performance is vey noticable for me, in VR and in Pancake.
But I know some peeps will put up with it or even just not notice it.

Yes Ody performance has improved since launch, but its still not good. Quality hasnt improved since launch, shadows still flicker and antialias is still very very poor.

But I dont expect they will hold off on a DLC just to fix the graphics and maybe all the bugs. I mean you cant get paid for fixing the game but you can for adding new shineys :)

his system is still plenty good enough or should be anyway (I have a quest 2 and a quest pro.,... just use VR medium preset, the difference between that and ultra is negligible anyway)
I run a Quest 3 with an i7 11700 & RTX 4070ti usually without issue, though certain Odyssey settlements can still drop me into ASW - which I could solve by dropping settings but I like my shiny-shiny 😁 Performance was a lot worse for me during Odyssey’s early days when I was using a Quest 2 and i7 8700 & RTX 3070ti though I did see improvements during the various Updates. I had zero performance issues in the Legacy game.

With regards to the previous posts, we had someone comparing 1920x1080 60fps on a flatscreen monitor to a HMD with 1832x1920 per eye running at a minimum of 72fps.

Yes I do run on a VR medium preset with 1.0 HMD and 1.0 Super - HMD res at 4128x2112 (default 1.0x) 72Hz.
For the majority of the game, you are correct and thats fine, but as soon as I enter an area or activate the draw for an area, that is ODY (Station Concourse, Settlements, FC concourse, Planet Plants) then ASW activates or if thats disabled, then it FPS lags.
Its because those areas are very very badly optomised. Not because of my setup.

Also flying normally anywhere and shadows will flicker on the dash, this flicker happens everywhere in the game, you can see it on shadows on station walls, planet surfaces etc etc. They also move wrong when you move your head. If you move you head up, down or left, right the shadows will move with your head movement. Thats incorrect.

Antialias .... its noticeably much worse than it was in Horizons or in 2014. That happend when it went to ODY.

The link between the OP planet DLC query and the performance of EDO is tentative at best folks.
I'm not dissuading anyone for highlighting the perf issues EDO brought.
I do think it proper to note that FDev have brought EDO perf improvements even as I make my point about EDO perf overall not keeping pace with previously releases of ED.

But can we get back to my dream please (or the OP query in other words)... where planet exploration leads to caves with pirate hideouts and mission objectives from the local gendarme to build up an intel through careful spying (do not engage) all in order to identify where the hostages are being held or the stolen art work is being hidden. Of course there then is the opportunity to be part of the follow up mission to save the day using the intel gathered. In the meantime, I get an Engineer message asking me to test out a new 'thing' which has resulted from a discovery I reported a while back. Hmmm sounds interesting. Then as I am walking (not running!!!!) back to my ship, there's a sillouette on the distance hill which catches my eye .....

Ah! .. crap, I woke up again after the neighbours dog sounded off at the other neighbours blasted cat again ....

S!

** all in jest *

And, curiously, one of the CMs mentioned that they were working on a new AA engine that would be put into the game...
That was years ago, and nary a peep has been heard since!

oh for sure...... I am not doubting there are issues , and they are worse in VR (orbit lines rendering in 1 eye is a pet hate of mine - tho to be fair space feels more immersive with them off so there is that!..
and with a 3090 i probably should not have to use ASW but like you i do on occasion, however that is what it is there for i guess . Ody is certainly not without issues however personally i would rather live with them and get new shiny content than have the game stalled waiting on further improvements to the engine which may never come.

given the amount of refactoring which was done in Beyond combined with the initial patches in Ody, i get the feeling they have done all they can do (within the constraints that they have)

as for the features requested in OP, that would warrant a further paid expansion. Personally i would rejoyce at the announcement of ANY paid expansion be it planetary or something else.. just knowing that FD felt there was enough life in the old dog to still commit a full team to a premium addition would be great news.

Yeah the shadow flickers irritated me to no end. I turned off ambient occlusion and it's sooooooo much better now. There's still an initial once off/ once on flicker when you first drop into a star port but that's pretty much about it. It's no longer looking like a rave, while entering a station.

The same thing happens to me too. No matter whether VR or normal. Unfortunately it destroys a lot of the immersion

If you disable ambient occlusion, it reduces it significantly. You'll mostly just see the shadows flick off and then on again as soon as you exit super cruise and approach the station, and maybe once more when you get inside the mail slot. No more seizure strobing though 😂
