Doing the same mistakes for 25 years?

So.. "Mainstream gamers" of the time said all the same things about the earlier Elite games that supposedly "mainstream gamers" are saying about ED today.

Given how the earlier games in the franchise became the classics that they are - ported to every available platform, STILL being played on emulations of the original hardware and in native ports - I think it's fair to say that they were just as wrong then as they are now.

Yep, for decades the earlier games were the benchmark you used to measure how anything in the genre stacked up and most things didn't even come close.

ED is already the new benchmark, and nothings coming close so far.

Eh what? New benchmark for who exactly?

I think these forums are proof enough the game is far far from being a benchmark and it doesn't even matter if you prefer pvp or pve!

:D

If you gauge anything from modern social media and view forums as 'proof' of anything, you are living in an alternate reality.

The only metric that counts is how well it sells and how much its played. Everything else is hysterical noise farted out in echo chamber forums.

Then ED isn't that big of a hit and I would say it's far from being a benchmark isn't it....thanks for getting my point.

Well do we know how much its played? Is it financially successful? For a niche game in a recently dead genre its doing fine. And since it is the first it is a benchmark for others. NMS was judged by ED, so will SC and so on.

Sadly, all that most internet forums prove is that the level of rationality in such discussions has deteriorated from the days of BBSs and usenet in about the same proportion that computer game capabilities have increased.

Open world space dowhateveryoulikeulators.

Name a space game and I'll poke holes in it with my either my old or new elite yardstick depending on the age of the game.

Indeed...Lets take your criteria....

For an online video game it has't made that much money... I wont even ask you to look at SC to compare...lol

There isn't THAT many people playing it...it's a niche game which is kind of self explanatory...

I agree these forum and others are full of opinions and you know what they say....everyone has one.

We can all justify anything in all kinds of ways but sadly one the the most recurring opinions is that while ED has lots of potential it not living up to it...at least not yet.

Guess we shall have to wait and see.

Please... The only thing it simulates well is boredom of space salaryman ;)
Well, and star classes are accurate I guess.

Its a space game. "sim" - not so much.

P.S. Also I wish people finally realise that "please stop arguing and just leave" posts are not working.

Yeah, could be even more sim for me. As I said: take it or leave it. I take it. Works fine for me. :)

And that my commanders is what we have. 2 games. 1 'for daddy-casual home from work let me relax trading/exploring', and 2 'for bored with Eve mechanics, so I'll go hang out at the CG and bust some daddy-casual player's noses'

Either FDev are blind to this, or they know and are happy with it.

Wow, that's exactly what ED is in a single sentence. Perfectly described. If there was a 3rd option, "no kill mode" I'd pay handsomely for the experience, and I expect so would many others.

Well, CIG has made a lot of money, but all of it is going on creating a company(ies) from scratch, so essentially its making zero gains. Plus it can only keep people interested by selling more future content thats not even been made yet, which is on very shaky ground ethics wise.

Financially FD have done the opposite and made ED on a tight budget not really knowing if it would be popular. It is an old school game, but then ED is old school. For a niche game its doing fine, FD are doing fine- new builing, new IP work, good financial results and share price, outside investments. It will never get to Fortnite or WoT but then I don't think that was its intention.

So the 23,141 reviews on Steam that collectively give ED a 6/10 or "meh", are pretty much in agreement with the forum?

Like Steam reviews are the most reliable metric? Either you have the "after 600 hours I'm fed up" or those who have the attention span of a gnat and give up at having more than 6 buttons to push.

ED is niche. Its never going to cater to what everyone wants- you play it and have fun or you don't. Elite was the same, nearly all Elite style games suffer from similar problems.

Back when Braben and Bell were pitching the original Elite to software companies, most of them didn't understand it and wanted three lives and a high score like every other game at the time. Elite II-III was very much a matter of taste, but I happened to love it's scale and ambition and the fact that there was nothing else quite like it until E: D (and it wasn't created by a team of developers either. Braben did most of the work on his own)

If you want a freeform space game with a story and scripted missions then I heartily recommend Independence War 2. It's essentially GTA in space with a flight model not too dissimilar to E: D. Available from gog.com

No it wasn't. Home computers had been around since 1977 and by 1993 video games had made huge strides in terms of graphics and gameplay. It wasn't the beginnings of anything, far from it.

In 1993 (25 years ago), not everyone had a computer

In any case, nothing comparable with today

It was the beginning of consumer computing (even if the home computers existed for years),

and the vast majority of people did not have a computer at home.

And in addition, as said Cmdr RidingTheFlow, it was quite a ride patching before widespread Internet

You guys keeping pulling out the niche card. Trouble is, a tiny niche audience cannot support multi year development of a massive online game. I Elite wants to survive, it CANT BE niche.
