ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

I can do all that with my HMZ I use trackir so when I move my head I look round the cockpit if anything I can do it in high res everything is crisp and readable. I was using the HMZ with a gyro mouse velcroed to it to play fps horrors like outlast and its absolutely amazing, If I thought a DK2 was better I would sell my HMZ for £600 on ebay and buy a DK2 and still have £300 change, perhaps you should try the HMZ before jumping to conclusions about how I use it :)

You are so naive I think I will just leave you believing what you believe. One day you will get to experience one and will understand.

And for your information I have experienced a Sony HMZ.

Do you really think if the two technologies were even remotely similar that Sony would be putting millions into research and development of their very own Project Morpheus?

I found this quote from someone who reviewed them both...

"The Oculus uses lenses to bend light in order to create a 3D image that your brain perceives the same way you perceive the desk/computer in front of you, it also uses head tracking software to simulate the movements of your head, it has a 110* field of view which simulates your IRL FOV. The HMZ is NOT a virtual reality device, it is a TV screen you can wear on your head, when you put it on it's like looking at a large TV screen 15 feet in front of you, it doesn't have headtracking, it doesn't have lenses that bend light into a 3D image, the two aren't comparable other than that they are both HMDs. Comparing the two is a logical fallacy as they both perform vastly different functions. "

and also..

I play on the DK1 and even with the low res, personally, I think it's still much better than playing on my 1920x1080 monitor.

Once you have played it in a rift, there's no going back. It's better in a DK2 and will be even better once the Consumer version gets released.

Okay so I've been in the Rift now for over a week and am finally getting my VR legs after some tuning to get the tracking lag down to a min. Basically this meant switching ED graphics quality to min for everything and following some advice on other tweaks but at least I can now spend more than 20mins in ED without getting cyber sick.

I left off from trading, dumped the Lakon and bought myself a shiny new Viper figering I had enough to drop on insurance even if I made nothing at it. No point grinding creds at this stange anyway what with a reset looming an all. Combat in ED is a whole new ball game with the Rift and something it feels like I'm having to learn all over again. Hardly any PvP as yet but I am finally getting to the point where I can once again hold my own against the NPCs which is encouraging.

I am however having problems with the Galaxy map. While the VR experiance of this is nothing short of stunning I don't seem to be able to either hover over stars with the mouse to get the system info popup or click on them to set them as a target for the Nav. How are my fellow cybernauts achiving this function?

Well they aren't just remotely similar they just are similar, only the HMZ has a better image quality, yes yes I get it about the lenses I tried a DK1, essentially what you are getting is quite similar once you add head tracking with a HMZ I bought the HMZ because I preferred it to the DK1 I had tried both before purchase, but that isn't really what my initial point was which is wearing something on your face intended to block out the real world every time you play a game is a right royal pain in the behind. Something no amount of research and development is gonna change for a long time I suspect.

DK2 user here. ED is jaw dropping in VR and yea the text is a bit hard to read but I have no doubt CV1 will be IT. Playing on a 2D just doesn't convey the scale of the universe in VR you will NEVER get that from any 2d format. Having said that if you dont already have a DK2 I would say just wait for the consumer version where the res will be much better and other things.

Once you have the dk2 there is no going back.
It actually seems pointless to play with a monitor now.

Do you guys think I should get a DK2

Imho: Yes, get a Rift. If your funds can stretch to it go for a DK2 now and upgrade when the commercial release comes out. I have multiple large high res monitors but can't get the thing off my head. In your specific situation what with the low res TV and restricted space a Rift can only add to the experience. Yeah you need breaks for a smoke or to drink some tea but don't let that deter you. Can't think of anything better than sitting on the couch with the in-laws while they watch some mind numbing game show and I blast away at pirates, Yarrr!

Added myself, as mine arrived this afternoon. Took an hour from unboxing to running in ED - no problems so far other than some slightly aggressive CA, I'll look into that over the weekend but it looks like something that's easy to fix in the SDK, so perhaps we'll see some improvements when FD get around to updating their implementation.

Low latency is holding (over 75fps) with a single Titan Black (SLI disabled), though I've not had time to go anywhere especially demanding yet, just a couple stations and some light combat.

Very surprised I'm not feeling queezy though - the demo world scene made me feel quite ill. Think I'll avoid walking around demos for a while.

It's very, very nice, I can't stop myself from just standing up and looking around (need to make a camera trigger app for remote screenshot'n), but I already want a 4k version. :)

Just adding my order to the bottom of the list. Suspect I have a bit of a wait ahead of me :)

On the plus side the bulk of the orders were early on. Also the delivery batches appear to be getting a bit bigger - so hopefully not too long :)

Anyone knows how to reset the elite graphics configuration from outside the game? Any config file or registry?

When I start ED now it comes up as a huge window but stays white and nothing happens. This happen after I disconnected the Rift.

I am however having problems with the Galaxy map. While the VR experiance of this is nothing short of stunning I don't seem to be able to either hover over stars with the mouse to get the system info popup or click on them to set them as a target for the Nav. How are my fellow cybernauts achiving this function?

There's a bug with the rift at the moment that means that any time you enter the galaxy map after the first time in, the selection plane is parallel with your view vector. If you tilt the map down slightly you should see that there's a little selector cross right in the middle of the plane. It's that that selects stuff.

From each system there is a vertical stem that stops at the selection plane. move the selector around until you are over the top/bottom of the stem (it should have little circle showing you where it is) then wait a moment and the system data should appear. Hitting whatever button you have mapped to UI select after that should set it as your hyperspace target.

I'm digging that all up from memory so some of it might be a little bit not right. ;)

I definitely wont ever play a flight/space or racing sim on a regular screen again. Hardly played ED in premium, beta, now that I have the DK2, I play nothing else but ED and DCS.

The longest session I did so far lasted 10 hours, only taking the rift off when I had to go to the bathroom, not because of discomfort.

I slip it on and off in 1-2 seconds, there is only one cable (I play with speakers), I don't feel a significant heat buildup and don't sweat underneath it. Whilst there's room for improvement (that's why it's called a prototype), my nvidia 3dvision surround setup (triple 24") will never see use in a sim again.

Skimming through this thread, I found some odd statements: People claim they can't use the keyboard when wearing it, which I don't quite understand - do you guys actually look at the keyboard whilst typing? I look at the screen when I type, so I don't need to see the keyboard when wearing the rift either.

I have a pretty good spatial awareness at my workspace, I can even pour in a glass, drink, find, light and smoke my cigars or eat when wearing the rift. Moreover, I can peek out of it when I lean my head back (probably because I have a rather large, aquiline nose).

Lastly, I think it's odd that some people call it expensive - most people I've shown it to found the price to be very reasonable - of course it's in the eye of the beholder, but except for my mouse and mic, it's the cheapest peripheral I have connected to my computer.

Just because you can use Oculus for 10 hours doesn't mean you SHOULD use Oculus for 10 hours. Agreed, I think its a great system (haven't personally tried it), but to think that there is no eye strain or no ill-effect from having your eyes focus at close range for extended periods of time without stopping is ludicrous. The fact of the matter is, yes, Oculus is more immersive, but monitors will continue to be superior for extended gameplay for a majority of people.
