ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

I must admit I have not tried turning off vsync. I read somewhere on oculus site one of the "rules" of VR is always use vsync.

but if it works it works, so next time I am in ED I will check it out. thanks :)

I must admit to believing it needed to be on as well. I'll have a go at switching it off.

Setting the exe priority to high is a new one on me also so I'll give that a go as well.

I got it working.. you don't need Bilago's tool. Just press "Pause service" under Oculus config Advanced.

The culprit was a webcam service. Unplugged webcam, works now. :)

Before bilago softwares, with the task manager you had to disable OVRservice and WSCRPT , but after you have to reactivate them and it was more easy restarting the PC.

With the Bilago service, that is not working now you can toggle the servise.
With The Bilago launcher it deactivate and reactivate the service automatically when you open or close the ED Launcher;)

Not promoting developers, but one click actions that work is better to know them:D

I'm using a GTX 660Ti with a four-year-old i7 chip and, while I haven't checked my fps, the image is pretty smooth once I turn off vsyinc in the NVidia panel, disable Aero on Win 7, disable AA, and set the .exe priority to high. The rest of my graphic settings are on High. Not perfect, mind you, but almost no juddering and I can look across the cockpit quickly while in station with minimal lag. I find it very playable.

In fact, I can't understand why anyone would want to play ED on a flat monitor at all. Even at this stage, with my fairly dated set-up, ED in VR is frankly astonishing.

I disabled Vsync for mistake and I will keep it like this, also with the rift DK2 I think AA is useless.
AA was designed for rectangular pixels to smooth edges, but with Amoled pentile structure that are having e more exagon shape, the panel already creates it's own AA. I disabled it for performance and the letters have perfect shapes, no hard edge steps

Well, my solution is much simpler :D Just press "Pause", play the game.
Don't have a webcam connected etc.

I've voice chatted with Bilago in Riftmax Theater, about how awesome Riftmax was.. and appreciated his tool. Donated some money to Riftmax devs as well. :)

For most games and demos, the new utility is definitely going to be useful.

Btw, if you haven't tried Riftmax, you should!

On topic, Elite Dangerous!
I think most graphics settings are not very impressive. What I really find important for immersion is the shadows. When you fly past a sun, and see the shadows change inside your cockpit, that is awesome.. I couldn't care less about the textures and other things. Also, the sun looks a bit boring without bloom it seems.

Has there been any hint from Frontier as to when they will support DK2 Direct Mode? Extended Mode doesn't work on my machine and I'd love to play some ED on the rift.

I don't mean to double post or be a pain but could someone please give me some hints on how to use the galaxy map with the DK2 ? My mouse pointer seems to be stuck in a box that ends just slightly to the right of the options box and I can't do anything with the map other than look at the pretty stars (even the directions keys don't work).

Could someone help explain how to close the Wscrip.exe? I can find the oculus service in task manager, but cant find Wscrip.exe listed anywhere.

Thanks

with the new oculus update you can simply pause servicies in configuration utility:

oculus configuration utility>tools>advanced

I take it that when you get that skewing, your head tracking is also not working? That skewing effect is the exact same thing I experienced when I first launched ED with the DK2. This was prior to me knowing that I needed to shut down the service processes in the background. After doing that, and relaunching the game - the skewing was resolved and headtracking / leaning worked great.

Thanks, this fixed my issue and I can finally look around my cockpit like never before, reading text isn't that difficult with dk2 although I do need to fix my frame rate, well playable and looks amazing, flat screens suck again!

Bind the inputs from your flight stick to control the galaxy map? That's what I did.

I admit it seems impossible to get working but all I needed to do mine was a little read through this thread.

Direct to rift mode is the way forward but I think dk2 will get easier to setup and more E:D updates roll out.

What I did to get it all working:
1) Set the rift to extended mode (I really dont like this mode) keeping the original monitor as primary and the rift as extended, looking into the rift at this point sees my desktop wall paper with no icons different view for each eye

As long as you dont see your wall paper on its side go to step 2, if you do go to your display properties and change the orientation of the rift (portrate/landscape)

2) Turn off or stop the oculus service, no head tracking and strange screen if left running.

3) load up Elite and set to oculus (headphones or speaker), make sure you have 1080p selected as the resolution, frame rate should be unchangeable now.

Give it a whirl.
If you are trying this and still no joy then check you are not missing anything, if you dont understand a step or how to do something then please ask and I will try to help depending on operating system you have.

If you are convinced it wont work then no biggie Dave and his crew will setup d2r at some point...

I use my throttle's "radar cursor" (analog microstick) to translate in the X and Y axes. Then I click it in like a button to select what I'm pointing at.

I use the throttle's two rotaries (ANT ELEV and MAN RNG) to control elevation (Translate Z) and zoom in/out.

X52 - I use the air brake / flap slider for zooming in/out, Rotaries for (frwd/back - thumb) (left/right - index), 8way switch for vertical, joystick for rotation and yaw.

Works quite nicely.

That works. But X-52 has the lovely thumbstick also. Does Elite Dangerous not recognize it yet? It would be excellent if it could be used for vertical & lateral thrusters. Is the thumbstick on the X-52 analog or digital?
