ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

...and voice attack...

Voice Attack rocks and I will use it as a backup to the HOTAS, but my PC's in a through-room and we have a pet cockatiel (a small parrot). All of which means that sometimes I can't make too much noise, and sometimes it's too noisy for Voice Attack.

My kids think it's bad enough that I play games. When they see me with a Rift strapped to my face and randomly shouting 'target ahead...power weapons' they will think I've finally lost it.

Not that I will care.

Don't worry too much, if your kids are anything like mine they'll just back away slowly and close the door behind them before calling for the men in white coats again...

You have all controls available on a joypad/joystick and the ship menus.
You have all controls available on a joypad/joystick and voice attack.

When playing on the pad before and after I bought voice attack I did not need to use the keyboard.

Different strokes for different folks. Expensive kit is not required and if it was then FD would have failed at their job.
Absolutely - totally agree.

Tried a gamepad and sure it's workable, but for me I just couldn't get the control I wanted.

Do you have a Joypad?
I use the xbox pad even though I've got a joystick.

If not you do not have to buy an expensive Hotas stick.
You can buy a cheaper stick and it will work just fine.
e.g. Blackwidow
Logitech Extreme 3D

Voice attack would complement either a joypad/cheaper joystick + Rift.
I do have a Xbox pad... I'll give that a try. At the moment I'm trying to get a cheap x45 on eBay. But I'll look at the two you suggested.

Thanks

RiftUp conversion

So my HD upgrade finally arrived today...
Took a while to get things assembled and configured but boy was it worth it!
ED in High Res through the rift is pretty special!
Bring on the DK2!!!

Did anybody got a shipment confirmation yet? I'm just curious..

Not that I've seen so far. I had a look at the google docs tracker linked off the Oculus forum this morning and everyone was still showing as pending. If someone's got a shipping confirmation they're not talking about it.

I asked oculus about my order two days ago, just received this answer from their support:

Hi Jones,

Thank you for reaching out to us!

I've checked on your order on the system and everything is fine.

Though I can't provide you with an estimated time frame in which to expect your order, I can tell you that we are working hard to make sure we ship out as many devices as quickly as possible.

You can check on the status of your order at our website:

I'm keen to get the CV1 version of OR, but I'm finding all this devkit impatience a bit distasteful. The kit is for developers to help them create content, and every one of the people on here who have ordered a devkit with no intention of writing software is taking that opportunity away from a developer.

In your impatience to get the latest VR fix, you're helping delay the adoption of VR.

The OR is clearly amazing and exciting and if this was CV1 I'd be in there too pressing F5 every 5 mins on the order tracking page, but right now I can't help but feel loads of devs will be put off by the difficulty of getting test gear because a bunch of players got there first.

Geez, chill, it's really not a big deal! They've already sent (and are continuing to send) kits to priority developers. "Lesser" people who were genuinely interested in developing had the same opportunity to buy as the general public. Don't take it so seriously man! :p

From a recent video interview the CV1 will essentially be the DK2 in all but name.

The CV2 will be where the next big jump will come (apparently) and the journos reviewing it, when asked if they would recommend it as it exists now in DK2 form, said not right now.

Not trying to put a dampner on people who have ordered it, Im sure it will still be an incredible experience, just mentioning this for anyone expecting it to be polished to heck, or anyone waiting for CV1 to be any different.

If every kit was going to a developer working on a game, then even if only half the games get made, the Oculus Rift would herald the greatest renaissance ever in PC gaming.

It's not just for developers , testers play a key part also and oculus welcome feedback.

I've done a bit a both with the unity engine and feedback on the use of the product it all contributes. ED still wow's me with this unit, If I owned oculus I would be looking at doing a deal with FD as their launch title the two combined takes gaming to the next level.
