ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcFQ5sQIwRs

I cant remember exactly where they say it, but Im pretty sure its in this video.

At the back end, near 20 mins in, is where they don't recommend it necessarily for gamers to go out and buy, more of an enthusiasts thing right now (they say they will get one so...)

I've watched that previously. Nowhere do they say that CV1 will be like DK2 AFAIR. As I said, everything I have seen/read coming out of Oculus themselves says that CV1 will be better than DK2 in every way.

Both parts are just after the 20 minute mark. All the big things that will change, will 'probably' come with later versions of the CV, not CV1.

Its worth noting that ^^ was the opinion of the two journos that this would be the case, rather than anything officially announced.

Palmer Luckey says - "The first consumer version will be a lot better than DK2 [the current developer kit] - a lot better. There’s a lot of unannounced things we can’t talk about, but it’s going to be a lot smaller, a lot lighter, cheaper, wider field of view, higher resolution and higher framerate. DK2 wasn’t designed to be the thinnest or lightest thing we could make, or the cheapest for that matter: it was meant to be something we could get out quickly, that did all the functions we needed it to, very reliably. But it is a developer tool. We reused a lot of the same parts for DK2 that we used for DK1, because that allowed us to move a lot faster. But for the consumer version we’re making every piece from the ground up. There isn’t a single piece from DK1 or DK2 that will go into it, so we’re able to design it from the beginning to be a perfectly integrated, minimal piece of hardware."

CV2 will, of course, be even better but it's obvious CV1 is no rebadged DK2.

I'm keen to get the CV1 version of OR, but I'm finding all this devkit impatience a bit distasteful. The kit is for developers to help them create content, and every one of the people on here who have ordered a devkit with no intention of writing software is taking that opportunity away from a developer.

In your impatience to get the latest VR fix, you're helping delay the adoption of VR.

The OR is clearly amazing and exciting and if this was CV1 I'd be in there too pressing F5 every 5 mins on the order tracking page, but right now I can't help but feel loads of devs will be put off by the difficulty of getting test gear because a bunch of players got there first.

You assume none of us are developers. I've been developing for almost 20 years. I bet you've seen some of my work and just didn't know it. :p

There will be more than enough DK2's to go around, just as there were with DK1's. No one is going without. :D

So what Palmer is saying is that we shouldn't waste our money on something that will be superseded within a few months.

I don't have a computer that can render 4K stereoscopic images at 100Hz. I'll have to upgrade just to cope with the DK2.

And I'm betting myself the price of a VR headset that the CV1 going to take a while before it's available to buy,

I think Oculus were just trying to avoid the inevitable backlash of a certain type of buyer who would freak out if CV1 came out a short while after they bought a DK2.

The CV1 wont be 4k though, 1440 maybe. The good news is that Carmack at Oculus has come up with some interesting 'timewarping' tech that'll boost framerates for everyone.

This video explains it well.

And better graphics cards are also due before the end of the year at hopefully not stupid prices.

Got to say, if CV1 is delayed well into next year I'll have to scratch up the cash for a DK2.

Few months -> a year, who knows! They've repeatedly said not to buy DK2 if you're not a developer but that's just because it's not a consumer product yet, not that it cannot deliver great results... hell, even DK1 was amazing! People want VR and DK2 is the best money can buy so is it a waste, even if CV1 comes out in 6 months? That's just down to each individual's wallet and priorities. :)

I for one would have KS's DK1 if it was HD but at the time ED needed cash.
We may not be developers but its nice to look back. Thing like building the first true sound card for the Beeb etc. And help ED into the VR world.

CV1 in a few months? No chance. They'll still be fulfilling dk2 backorders. And with cv1 not sharing any components, I can't see it coming for at least 9 months, and probably more.

For those interested in res specs... I just kitted out my DK1 with the riftUp HD screen...
We are in for a treat when those DK2s start rolling out !!!
Imagine a universe where writing is actually legible!
:D

Some people say the RiftUp screen is better than DK2 screen. I've heard a few people say that some of the text in Elite still won't be readable even with a DK2.

Hopefully not true! :(

Well, even if you can't read it from afar.. the DK2 will allow you to **reach forwards from your chair to look closer at the text**! :D

The RiftUp screen is not a pentile matrix display (like the DK2), so colour accuracy might be better and things may look a touch sharper, but there won't be much in it. S some people claim that pentile screens bother them, but I've yet to notice a difference, but the Rift will have our eyes closer to screens than we are used to so that could come into play. Time will tell.

Where the RiftUp screen loses out to the DK2 is refresh rate, and possibly blacks.

So long as Elite supports this! They don't have to. But I'm hoping they will allow this to a small extent to help HUD legibility. I don't think there has been an official FD announcement on whether this will happen or not, but I wrote earlier in this thread that allowing the positional tracking would be a panacea to Rift low res problems.

I'm hoping that in future updates of the game you'll be able to see the pilots through the cockpit window, and you'll be able to see them lean forwards to peer at their displays. :)

I'd like that too - and to work with VR gloves so that I can, erm, give various hand signals to those people who have just rammed me :D

HOTAS and the rift should be enough to capture and show most avatar movements. Add a Leap Motion or Kinect for 'hands off' gestures....:)
