ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

So long as Elite supports this! They don't have to. But I'm hoping they will allow this to a small extent to help HUD legibility. I don't think there has been an official FD announcement on whether this will happen or not, but I wrote earlier in this thread that allowing the positional tracking would be a panacea to Rift low res problems.

David Braben himself has said he is a big fan of playing ED on the Rift, as has Michael. You can bet a months salary that ED will support motion tracking.

All being well its only a week, whilst they work on the new SDK and it won't affect the 2nd half of the batch.

I won't lie I am a bit disappointed but its a dev kit, no biggie :)

These things happen

Loving the rift is one thing, but they will only add tracking if it makes sense in the game. There is another thread in this forum discussing whether the pilot being able to move when seated was a good thing or not. I think the consensus was it wasn't. But I don't think FD have commented . we will just have to wait and see! I hope they allow some movement towards the instruments. I'm hopeful given you can zoom on the instruments right now.

Hmm, still cant see them missing that trick. They already give OR users special privileges with regard to the pilot's head movement caused by inertia. They'll make motion tracking work Im sure of it.

I havent read that thread tho. Im curious as to why people think it would be a bad thing to have the pilot move.

However personally I'd rather you didnt have to lean into your controls to read it properly!

Cofirmed by David Braben that DK2 will support positional tracking (you will be able to lean and move around your cockpits).

RPS: Will you be tracking the depth motion tracking aspect of the Rift DK2?

David Braben: We support that. If it’s on your Oculus Rift, we support it. We support DK1, we support Oculus HD and we support DK2. It’s actually quite nice, you can see some things around the cockpits, you can look out and lean around, particularly on the Type IX, you can actually see down to the weapons.

I think this was mentioned on here a while ago, but I thought it was worth bringing up again...

Virtual Ride to Space

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1592839372/virtual-ride-to-space-vr2space

"A weather balloon will carry 12 HD video cameras up to a 30km altitude to create a virtual ride to space viewable with the Oculus Rift."

Kickstarter ends in a few days.

Go on people bung a few pound at this, such a great idea and I'm sure it will be a great Rift experience. (can you tell I backed already and really want this to happen?)

Yep - legibility without leaning is is really what the game should hopefully have with the DK2. There's nothing they can do with the DK1. Hopefully they will tweak if there is the odd thing which isn't legible with a DK2. Leaning, whilst a solution, does put you at a disadvantage.

I recently upgraded my DK1 to the RitftUp screen which is basically the same res as a DK2... I can honestly say you will have no worries reading the screens :)

You're not the first to say that, and I find that very encouraging

Can't wait for the DK2 to arrive, but I reckon I'm at least 6-8 weeks away having ordered at the end of June (with an August ship date at the time)

Changing the cockpit colours to green when that is available till help with reading text on the DK2.
This is due to the pentile screen and the way humans see colours.

With positional tracking you can always move closer to the text to read it better.

Indeed. I can't wait for this:
