ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

I'm not too bothered about the timescale and more the extra import costs. Can I ask if when you played your pre-order you had to pay extra for import tax, in addition to shipping? And if so did they end up charging you the extra tax when it came to taking payment?

I payed $55 for shipping and although there is no import tax in Ireland for consumer electronics they are still subject to VAT which unfortunately is quite high around here (23%). So the total cost of the rift with shipping and tax was $499

Value Added Tax. I think in the US it is just called sales tax.

except VAT applies to everything straight across the board. People have been trying to get a VAT tax here and do away with the IRS for years. Means pretty much everyone pays the same tax on the same item no matter who you are and the rates are the same everywhere (if i understand that part correctly) Personally i would prefer it.

I think tomorrow some commanders might be happy with what I found. Video is loading :D

Let's see who can guess, the winner will have the possibility to stay 1week on the bright side of the Moon with a nice view on the sea:p:D

Ok maybe someone already knows about it. :)

Goodnight:D

No but I'm guessing working direct mode ?

Is there a huge difference between OR and Google Cardboard? I never tried OR just VR color cross google :)

Cool username and avatar. +1

Yes, there is a massive difference between the two. One is made out of plastic, the other is cardboard... :p

No... seriously...

The OR connects to your PC and is a full 3D virtual environment for games designed to take advantage of it. It works particularly well with E: D.

Cardboard is just a bit of fun from Google that uses a regular smart phone, and runs software on your phone. I don't think you can play E: D on Cardboard, or any PC game, unless you have some kind of screen broadcast technology (and even if you do, I suspect the latency would be too much to use comfortably).

If anyone can advise on this I'd appreciate it.
I have the DK2 and a fairly robust PC with liquid cooled i5 4590k, 8GB RAM, M.2 onboard SSD, SLi compatible motherboard & PSU and an Asus Nvidia GTX 650ti card running a single 32" 1920x1080p screen at 60z on DVI to HDMI on the card and the DK2 is on the HDMI connection on the card.

I've got *some* funds and I'm looking at improving the graphics specification. The options aren't amazingly vast so I'm looking at 2, maybe 3 options.

1) Scan eBay and other sources for a Asus GTX 650ti and go SLI - (About £50-£75)
2) Buy a GTX750ti (about £100-£125)
3) Stay as it is and buy a better card next year around March (about £200)

Given that there will always be a "better" card along in the future, realistically what do you reckon would be the best way forward given the December release of E : D?

Not sure if 650ti in SLI will be able to give you solid 75 FPS on Rift... Sure, you can tinker with graphical settings and lower things down a bit (lot)...
Having quite a nice CPU, I'd suggest you to get 970 GTX. This is incredible GPU in terms of performance per $! And it's highly future proof purchase as well!
I have 970 GTX in SLI, and event single GPU (Asus Strix) is able to give SOLID 75 FPS on maxed out Elite: Dangerous (well, don't recall, but maybe shadows was on MEDIUM).

What the game needs is for the GUI to have a VR mode where the text size/fonts etc are chosen for VR readability. Of course the problem is really the resolution of the OR as even 1080p is far too low when your eyes are mere mm from the screen. You can make out every single pixel. I'm hoping the consumer version will support a much higher resolution (4K or greater).

Does anyone have a definitive list of the settings to apply in both the OR config as well as ED graphic options that gives the optimal clarity in the GUI readouts/menus and smoothness of motion?

The problem then will be cramming so much onto such a small screen; it'll get even worse. Its the problem that we're having with 4k monitors already - anything smaller than a 27inch monitor makes it pretty much unusable as everything is so small. But I agree about being able to see all the pixels - thats its only major downfall at the moment.

I just had my first 3.9 DK2 session and it seemed pretty smooth, all settings on high, bit of judder around Aulin Enterprise, everything else seemed good, got my first 3.9 kill when some nasty pirate interdicted me! :) I'm still super sampling to 2560x1440 on the DK2 at the moment a la the below guide.

What specs you manage to super sample for 75+ fps on high settings? I mean it seems you would need a lot to manage that when ppl told me my GTX770 is gonna need to run Low settings to ensure 75+ fps. with 1080p ofc

Old-ish quad core AMD cpu, 4GB ram, GTX970... I doubt I'm getting 75fps at all times but it's pretty awesome!

I'm asking because there are ppl with GTX 780 and Titan and have to have everything on LOW to have smooth experience. :D

My system:

Intel Core I7-3770K OC 4.2ghz
Intel® High Performance Liquid Cooling
MSI Z77A-GD65
Crucial DDR3 BallistiX 16GB
Kingston HyperX SSD,
MSI GTX 980 Twin Frozr

Runs pretty smooth I think. Please note that I havent had that much time in ED yet as my DK2 arrived last night. But, as a first impression I`d say it runs pretty good. Im running ED with shadows off but the rest of the graphics settings are selected as on or high. Thought I would test out different graphics settings tonight but I cant get out of the Rift. Im only 2 hours into running ED with the DK2 and its impossible to get out of it ! :D
