"The later you find out that your DK2 is shipping the shorter the length of time between finding out it's coming and you actually have it in your hands. Try and think of it that way ;) "

Response I got was
"How exactly does that work? If it's going to take a week (hopefully less) to ship, then why would it be shorter to find out later rather than sooner?"

Wasn't really sure how to answer that one.
How does time work? :)

Hope all you DK2 people get your orders soon! Mid July I heard from a chap at work thats got one ordered but ya never know i guess.

Make sure to post impressions!

Nothing concrete yet so take any dates with a pinch of salt.
Oculus use the same "Soon" as FD does (maybe they share it).

So this is now a race to see who's the first to get their DK2.

The winner gets... the envy of everyone without one.
Fixed that for you.

Slightly shonky but here's a video showing what it looks like to look through the lens of a DK2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxOA_qFfW3M

Be aware though that it kinda looks better in the video than it will on your head. If you've seen similar videos of a DK1 and tried a DK1 you'll know what I mean.

It's 6.07am in Oculus part of the world... I wouldn't bother for a few hours. Theres coffee and bagels and stuff to happen before they start thinking of an update to the waiting world.

Don't know if you've seen this?

Somewhat depressing in its example.. but I DONT CARE, WE WANTS IT, PRECIOUS :)

Yep, posted it in this thread I think.
It's not a 100% representation though just a mock up.
The DK2 will not look like the 1080p low persistence setting, it will look different.
DK2 has a pentile subpixel arrangement which means it has a different SDE layout and there are less red and blue subpixels than a standard RGB display that the simulator is attempting to replicate.

The simulator also does not take into consideration the distance you are viewing it and/or the resolution of the monitor you are viewing it on.

Until you strap a DK2 on your head you won't know for sure what it will look like with 100% certainty.

This isn't a very good example at all. I have a DK1 and if it looked like that, I wouldn't be able to use it! :D

I made this video earlier of what Elite looks like through the DK1 lenses:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNFWS4NHMuw

Do you not think that the video looks slightly better than it does when you're wearing it?
Hard to make out the screen door effect and individual pixels on the video and you can see them plain as day with the headset on (well you could when I tried it).

The video looks better in some ways, and worse in others.

The video doesn't really show the screen door effect that's true, but to be honest in Elite you don't notice it very much. Most of the time you are in space, and space is the same colour as the black lines of the screen door, so it is more or less imperceptible.

Also the colours and lighting inside the station seem go a long way to hiding the screen door effect, though you can still see it. In contrast, in a flight sim against a bright sky the screen door is very noticeable.

But yes, on the YouTube video you can't see the screen door effect at all.

But it does give a very good representation of the resolution.

The colours are obviously much better in the Rift itself.

DK2 colours and contrast should be much better than the DK1 too. I've got a PSvita with an AMOLED screen and the colours and contrast are lovely compared to any LCD I've had which always looked a bit washed out and pale.

My favour demo on the DK1 was Titans of space, only played with it for a week and didn't really adjust anything so my impressions were based on that. Might have been better with some tweaking (like running it at higher rez and downscaling).

You are tempting me to go order a DK2 lol :D

Well wait till they're in people hands and they're raving about them, you'll be envious.
If you've got a DK1 you know that the rift is the next big thing.
Always said if they brought out a higher rez version I'd buy ASAP after trying DK1. Low persistence, 75hz refresh rate (game looks smoother), faster pixel switching times and 6D positional tracking are just awesome extra's for me ;)

Best thing is, is that if you order it now you only have to wait till August, I've been waiting since March! :)

Impressive stuff isn't it!

I'm mainly waiting to see if the DK2 will allow the user to read text in Elite, if so - it's likely I will buy it.

I'm currently using my DK1 to develop with, so if the CV1 is over a year away I will need a DK2 anyway. But the added bonus of being able to fully play and trade in Elite and be able to read text, would likely be the tipping point to make me order one sooner. :D

Even when the text is not readable perfectly with DK2, I think the positional tracking will help a big deal. Just move closer to the trading menus to make the text bigger and hopefully readable.
