Any news about a DirectToRift mode for ED yet? I see a lot of unity demos popping out with direct support as for instance OceanRift. Would like to see some performance comparisons between direct and extended, heared the direct mode is so much smoother..
Hope it'll be implemented in ED when my dk2 finally arrives this month!

There are issues with the change over to the new SDK... frontier are in contact with oculus at the moment...

great news, work in progress and no pending:p
i guess the significant downside of an own engine is that you have to figure it out all by yourself..

The good thing here is that Frontier are not just supporting Oculus as a sales tactic or to help a minority of users out - they're actually enthusiasts of the technology themselves and want to see it working properly in-game. :)

... And nobody does it better! ;)

HUUUUGE Cabin :D

So I just traded up from Hauler to Cobra Mk3 to a Lakon Type 6 today.

The Lakon makes money hand over fist, it's great. I'm making 72k in a 1 hop round trip (about 10 minutes or less per round trip).

I took some screenshots for you all to see how huge the cabin is.

If you're using Windows Photo Viewer,

1. Open the picture and make a small window on your primary desktop
2. drag the window into the DK2 (off to the right for me)
3. In the DK2 align the window top/pointer in one of the eyes and then double click to maximise (might be a keyboard shortcut for this)
4. When maximised, hit Control+Alt+0 to get actual fullscreen.

This should give you the game view I had when snapping it. The cabin feels about 20 feet over your head and you have viewing ports in all angles pointing forward. It's like sitting in a bubble.

Anyway, just posted up a few pics for those who haven't gotten into anything with a big cabin yet :) Enjoy!

Edit:
I just tried to do this with one of the downloaded files and it doesn't do step 4 for some reason, so you don't really get the actual game view. If anyone knows why I can do this with my original files but the uploads don't do it, please post. I'd like to see someones view of an Anaconda.

You tell lies........burn the witch.........
Just a little question why did you leave it so late to order?

I've spent a number of hours pootling around in beta with the DK2, so I thought I'd share my impressions here. Obviously direct mode isn't working yet, so there's some fiddling about needed to get it going, often takes a lot of retrying before it does but I'm frankly surprised and happy it's working at all. The black bleeding and chromatic aberration are very noticeable; there seems to be colour depth issues for me (looks lower than 32 bit, but could be something else); there's known issues with shadows etc. not rendering correctly; also have not managed to get low persistence working in Elite: Dangerous (works a treat in some of the SDK4 demos), I'm sure it will with direct mode (as long as my hardware can keep up, of course). All that stuff should improve with updates from Oculus and FD, so the major visual issue then becomes the resolution, which can make smaller distant objects hard or even impossible to make out currently - thankfully all text is very readable, at least with a little help from positional tracking.

Now, having gotten all that out of the way, let me say that despite all these issues I am flabbergastingly gobsmacked at how truly incredible this is. Apart from the config utility demo scene, Elite: Dangerous was my first proper VR experience (that's probably going to colour my experience more positively), but whilst I've been very impressed with various other demos I've seen since, nothing else comes close. Elite: Dangerous is also the most comfortable VR experience I've had, played for a few hours straight with no discomfort, whereas most other things I've tried have left me a little "off" at best (or in the case of the Cyber Space demo, ripping the Rift off my face at the speed of NOPE). I'm getting more used to the general experience the more I use the DK2 (as I had hoped), but it's great that I can use Elite: Dangerous to convince my brain to accept this weird new thing I'm doing to it.

Head tracking generally just works flawlessly, the only issues being going outside of the bounds or facing away from the camera which is obviously just a limitation of the current hardware. Simply looking around such a detailed cockpit is entertaining in itself, and being able to look around during combat and select targets by looking feels completely natural.

The stations close-up are probably the most crap-in-pants amazing thing to look at currently. The part of my brain that knows we're not really in space and this is just a game often goes quiet when approaching a station, although it pipes up again when seeing the ridiculous antics of some of the AI ships, I'm sure that will improve but it's entertaining either way.

I should also mention that my immersion has been helped by my X-55 and Subpac, both purchases that are certainly not cheap but I'm very happy with. Throttle and stick movements appear perfectly synced to the in-game avatar, button presses aren't for obvious reasons. I would like an option to disable the idle hand animations (as nice as they are) though, because they freak me out and are a little immersion breaking in VR.

Also in terms of performance, Ctrl+F doesn't (appear to) do anything in Oculus mode so not sure exactly how many frames per second I'm getting, but apart from the obvious lack of low persistence it felt silky smooth most of the time. Specs are in signature, I have all graphics settings on the highest with FXAA, reducing them doesn't get me any closer to low persistence so can't wait for more updates on that front.

I'm convinced VR is here to stay, just how widely accepted it'll be will I think depend on the price and the amount of ing around required to get it working, but if it remains somewhat niche at first that's really not a bad thing. Elite: Dangerous will be one of, if not THE killer app for Oculus when CV1 releases. I'm not sure I'm entirely ready for that day.

TL;DR - Oculus and Frontier know what they're doing, Elite: Dangerous in VR will blow minds and cripple wallets, the future is here it's just a little blurry at the moment.

Fellow chummers, I have been playing E:D on the dk2 silky smooth (as long as it's above 75 fps) for a few days now, but now I see a bit of look up/down only pitch judder always present in the game, even at the menus.

This effect does not appear in other demos and I did not change any settings. Did anyone else get an effect like this, despite being able to look left right pan on the other axis judder free?

found a useful tip to measure your IPD. look in a mirror with your left eye open looking at your left pupil in the mirror mark the centre of the pupil. close left eye, and do the same with your right eye. Measure the distance.

I now know to set mine to 67 -68mm IPD

The config tool isn't bad either - that said the current runtime is very much tuned to 66-67mm in terms of IPD. I have had some luck when setting my IPD to that point in terms of reducing chromatic aberration rgegardless of eye strain caused by difference in IPD

Struggling with the galaxy map

Has anyone figured a way to select a destination in the galaxy map? The 3D aspect looks great in the rift but I can't set a destination :S

I have the same problem (just been moaning on reddit about it. So you are not alone , but I have no help for you

Bit off topic but: You just need enough money to get a new ship. All ship trades effectively use the value of your current ship offset against the other ships in shipyard.

Look in station services at the bottom of the menu you'll see Shipyard.

In there you have a list of ships and prices (no stats yet available, use internet to read up pre purchasing).

When you own an expensive ship the cheaper ships trade down and give you the difference back as balance.

ALWAYS have insurance (think 15% of ship price) before getting reckless.

If you're doing Aulin > i Bootes (which is what i'm doing since the start) your trade run for the exact same things, just increasing quantities goes from 2k per run, to 12k per run to 25k per run to my now 75-80k per run. Just selling the same things over and over. Makes me laugh i'm effectively buying a viper per round trip run.

Its difficult I can't get mouse to work in that mode. I find dcs is the same after crashing my plane.... Menus do not respond so can't restart .,. But I digress.

In ED if you know the name of the system you want to select try searching for the name in the search box. This selects it.

Yes this is how I've been doing it. Move arround the star map with mouse. Then type in the name of the system you are interested in. Its a bit of a naus but it functions

I tried that and hit enter... It takes me to it on the map, but doesn't select it as a destination :( now I have a good few million in the bank I'm broadening my horizons, but the map is next to useless in the rift unfortunately.

I've been using the map with a controller and I've not had any issues with the map at all. Right analog stick rotates view, left analog stick moves the 2D cursor around the plane.

I wonder if you can't map moving the cursor to keys on the keyboard or somesuch rather than using a mouse?

Well, when I say I've not had any issues that's a bit of a lie - it is juddery as hell because I get such low framerates in it, and as such generally unpleasant to use, but that's about it :p

But how do you select a target?
