ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

As per your edit. There are 3 processes that the tool will stop. All 3 *must* be disabled for tracking to occur.

While there are some chromatic (and colour) bleeding, they are fairly minor and playable. The distortion/skewing that you describe is usually caused by ED not being set in OR mode in the 3D graphic options in the game.

OK, I might try and get him to use this tool and see if that helps. We did try three settings in graphics, side-by-side, Oculus headphone, Oculus speaker with no change to the rendered view.

Is there anything that must be done in Elite to get it to use dk2 head tracking (rotational) inside the cockpit or does it just work automatically. As I mentioned above, when going into the controls when wearing the dk2 all it had were the basic keyboard & mouse type options.

Thanks for your quick reply.

Yep, everything but explicitly '7. Install Bilagos app and execute'. Instead I just killed the two process that have often been mentioned and I think are killed by that app? I'll search for the app now though and see if it does anything else.

Stopping them is not good enough because they just start right back up again. The whole point of the Bilagos app was that it prevents them re-starting.

Anyway... you don't need that app anymore. The latest 0.4.1 runtime SDK from oculus provides its own fix. So.. make sure to download the newest 0.4.1 version from the Oculus website. Once downloaded open the Oculus Configuration Utility and goto Tools on the menu and select Advanced - here you will see a Pause Service option. This should solve all your E D tracking problems.

Thanks for the info. Have to see if I can persuade him to update to 0.4.1.

Downloaded this myself but cannot see the pause option! Anyway I'll wait for full ED integration.

The pause option in part of the top menu in one of the sub menus... but until FD uses the new SDK it will not fix SSE4.1 for us. I was reading Oculus has ED as one of there demos at the trade show, maybe there is a new SDK build already?

This is exactly what I do.
Works like a charm. Not had a single issue.
Just measured the distance...45cm from my head to the sensor.
Sensor is on my monitor and I'm sat at my desk like when I do normal work.

I don't care what was said in a random video, all I know is that it works on my setup without a single issue from day 1.

I have it on my monitor, with my hotas and no issues at all... sometimes when you lean in too far it does the stop.

It works great

I also have it on my monitor somewhere between 45 and 60 cm from my face.
When I set full speed my body shifts forward. That's really a strange experience.

While I'm not trying to discredit any of you guys, what I saw in that video was pretty different.

Maybe they hadn't set it up right in some way.

I will wait until I see actual videos of people using OR at the kind of distances we are talking about, then I will consider one in the future.

I have a small room with little space for adapting, so it needs to just work out of box where I am sat.

My camera is sitting on my monitor. I can reach out with my arm and grab it without moving from my chair. E D works perfectly as do all other head tracking programs. I don't understand why you are so sceptical?

Again, direct video evidence.

They might not have it set up right, but that camera is a metre away and they are still getting out of range warnings....

Somebody post a video of it being used at 45cm with absolutely no issues tracking and I will be happy.

What the?..they're clearly doing it wrong. It must be set up arseways.

Ive not had a single issue and Im stuffed right into a small corner of my sittingroom.

A bit late to the game as I only just ordered on the 10th August but cant wait to play this game and a few driving/flight sims on my DK2. Roll on September time for me (hopefully!) :)

Edit:
Finally able to re-test at my friends, using Bilagos app and everything worked perfectly. The weird skewing was gone, rotational and positional head-tracking was fine. I would imagine updating to 0.4.1 of the sdk and stopping the relevant services would have the same effect. Looks like my initial test failed as I didn't realise you had to stop the config.exe too.

Original Post
Out of interest I tried setting the graphics in ED to use Oculus setting (and side-by-side) on my normal monitor (no dk2 attached) and the result was exactly the same as I observed using the dk2 with the weird skewing issue.

I've recorded and uploaded a video from the first combat mission here

I would really appreciate if someone with a dk2 could take a quick look and confirm that this is NOT what they see when using the dk2.

Further more if any kind soul would like to maybe test using the dk2 without using Bilagos app or pausing the services using the new 0.4.1 sdk and tell me if the results are the same as those I recorded. If it doesn't produce the same results, perhaps someone might have an idea as to why this is happening?

I would really love to get to the bottom of this issue before I go back to my friends, since as I mentioned he's not too keen on messing around with his dk2 now he has it set up for his main game.

A few notes.
I've increased the brightness in post-production to make the asteroids more visible, so visually this does not represent the quality of ED. At the end of the first segment is a second segment where I set the graphics to normal for comparison.

As you can see it exhibits some weird skewing behaviour on everything rendered outside of the cockpit. You can see the effects on the asteroid field as it appears to compress/elongate as you roll the ship. You can also see it if you focus on the large asteroid in view at the edge of the screen. When it is on the left or right of the cockpit it is very long (vertically), when is on the top it becomes squash vertically.

I take it that when you get that skewing, your head tracking is also not working? That skewing effect is the exact same thing I experienced when I first launched ED with the DK2. This was prior to me knowing that I needed to shut down the service processes in the background. After doing that, and relaunching the game - the skewing was resolved and headtracking / leaning worked great.

I can't confirm at the moment if the pausing in the new 0.4.1 config tool works as I haven't used it. I've just been shutting down the services manually.

Well in that video they had it on a tripod about a metre away and the guy was getting out of range warnings when looking up.

They also specifically say in the video you can't just put it on a monitor as it will be too close if your at your desk and not sat back.

Based on that, it won't work for me.

They're wrong. Mine has been on top of my monitor since the day I received it two weeks ago and it works fine.

You are looking at direct video evidence of someone getting out of range with their camera sitting about three inches above their desk and pointing to it as evidence that it won't work when it is set on top of a monitor.

This is ridiculous. Of course we can't post video. We're all lying to you.

To what purpose other than putting ED in discretion?
If you're a fan you would send a ticket including your hardware and settings used.
And you wouldn't name it like that for the public find but send the link in the ticket.
This is a Beta.

So basically you have seen one video where they have set it up badly (the camera seems to be on the desk and pointing at his navel) and choose to take that as the norm rather than multiple people on here telling you it works fine....

Your choice I guess. ;)

Are SlackR's instructions still relevant? I was wondering if the latest sdk has fixed those "end-task" issues?

Got an email off Oculus today saying the Rift will be delivered on Monday  Will the new sdk be shipped with it or is it something I need to download from somewhere?

Why not? There's no NDA. Elite isnt the holy grail for everyone. Posting this kind of videos on tube makes ppl learn what to expect when buying OR and i believe that was the reason NoiseCrime uploded it.
