ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Bloody thing started playing up this evening.
Desktop set to monitor but all my icons dissapear over to the rift, but the damn thing wont turn on. Light on camera is on, but the rift display wont come on.

It's on according to the config utility, but if I boot up the config demo it stil doesn't turn the headset display on and the light on top of headset stays orange.

Check all the cables, maybe your hdmi cable has been unplugged.
Turn PC on and off again.

He thinks 4k is needed for the Oculus Rift.

Yeah that makes sense. I'm holding out on buying a new video card until the CV1 is on the way. I got a larger PSU for upgrading potential (800w). Gonna hold off on buying a card until the last second as I'm sure the CV1 will be a bit hard on the GPU. I can't wait :D

*Edit: Maybe the GTX Titan Z will be more affordable by then... it's spec'd for 5k

Titan Z is dual-GPU, which is not good for OR as far as I know.

Not switched back to direct to rift by mistake?

Checked all those things, unplugged, re plugged, rebooted pc, re ran config tool. Just suddenly moved all my icons off the monitor, though left start bar there and refused to start up.

At one point I did get elite to turn it on, but after a short while it turned off again. :(

Here is another Inteview of David Braben where he talks about the Oculus Rift and some other supported peripherals.

The site is german but the video is in english.

4k is needed. But it's a few years off yet. There is no cable available that can render 4k at over 60Hz. It's a cable bandwidth issue. Until that's solved and graphics cards are available with the connector we won't see a 4k rift.

My dk2 was turning off from day 1. I diagnosed a faulty cable. Contacted support but didn't get anywhere. I ended up taping the cables to the head band and have to be extra careful taking it on and off. My problem is where the hdmi and usb split before they enter the rift. Might be worth checking by GENTLY moving the cable and see if it powers up.

Everything works well on DK2 for me ...until I click on the galactic map button.
It shows the galactic map ...but then when I try to do anything it drops me back to Windows.
The game is still there and I can reopen the window and everything is fine .... as long as I don't try to do anything on the galactic map!? Weird.

One little thing, some people forget that you HAVE to update the firmware on the rift, have you installed the 2.11 version?

Pretty much my experiance with it. If we can get the resolution up, and allows for custom lense width (that should reduce eye strain) we should be A-for away.

What's you IPD if I may ask?

You may ask, but I don't know how to answer it. Is that something an optician will tell you?

I get my eyes checked every 2 years as I work with computers all day... right now I don't need glasses. Due another check in about 6 months I think.

Was nice meeting you today... Glad you enjoyed it! Just got back after a LONG day of demoing at Fantasticon... Loads of fun, but time for bed! :p

It was good to meet you too! All the people at Fantasticon did a tireless & superb job - top marks. :)

IPD Inter papillary distance. - The distance between the center of your pupils. Very important to enable proper stereo vision when looking at 2 images like in the rift. - Average is about 65mm, and if not set properly in configurations can lead to unfocused vision in the rift and can cause headaches and induce nausea.

You can self measure it there:

Works quite well.

Displayport 1.2 can cope with 4K at 75Hz although it is on the cusp of its capacity. 1.3 is due in Q4 and that is meant to be able to cope with 32Gbits/s so 4K@100Hz (developed for 4K 3D & 8K).

Man, I can not get my DK2 to be clear in ED. Maybe my IPD is just too wide for the lenses (70mm) but it's frikken annoying. My game session are limited to 30-45 minutes before I quite with a raging headache.

I'm going to wait till Frontier patch ED up to use SDK 4, but I that doesn't fix it, (and I doubt it will), my rift is going on Ebay.

Yeah, I was thinking just this. However, Lucky Palmer says the holy grail will be 4k@120Hz.

TBH, by the time GPUs can render that on complex games, Displayport 2 will be out which will no doubt have some crazy stats.

Then people will want the HMD to be wireless..... it never stops :D

It's exciting, but we have to remember we are right at the start here. Things will improve massively over what we have now. It's like the 3DFX/Voodoo 1 days all over again!

Just used that link above to measure my IPD (I do wonder if that site is there to get people's CVVs from their credit cards :D).

I came up with an IPD of 56mm. Quite a difference from your 70. Am I going to have problems from having a small IPD (if 56 is small?!?).
