ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Something completely different but yet within the topic of the tread.

With the rift we can actually be what we're not. We can be a rocket and guide ourselves in our enemy. We can have our eyes placed on the wingtips , landinggear or take over the body of a robot and repair our hull from the outside of our ship.
I hope Frontier recognise these possibilities and try to keep the lead in development.

re:eek:verclock
My i7 4770K never goes over 50% and it isn't that much faster than yours, so while it won't hurt to try boosting your CPU I won't get my hopes too high.

I've stopped playing (until Beta 2) but I couldn't get much better than medium (with accepting horrible judder when the FPS drops in stations)

Best result for me was after changing my monitor res to 1280x1024@75 from 1440p@60, 2nd best was to remove Vsync and use frame limiting (Dxtory) to 75FPS

From memory my last DK2 settings was Medium with Shadow and Ambient off, and MLAAx2

For reference
i7 4770K, Z87-Pro, 16GB Kingston 1600 C9 DD3, 2xPalit GTX770 4GB, 2xSSD

So I was running a couple of tests with my GTX770 system. (hd screen @75hz)
Overclocking the CPU did not bring anything. CPU load is around 30-40%

Flying in the extraction site in LP98:

Using normal HD resultion and Monitor
High: 82-85FPS
low:155-120 FPS
High with med shadows: 95-100 fps

Rift on low settings:
Flying and looking (mostly horizontal) 65-72 fps..Judder
Now that I found strange when looking down on my body and 1/4-1/3 of the outside view was visible it droped to 38fps

Flying waste disposal mission No.1
Rift low settings: constant 75fps

@King5ton
Yep, let's see what will come up during next Beta

Maybe worth putting your location on the list as well,

IE UK, SWE, US etc so people can get an idea on what areas are being shipped at roughly what times.

Rift on low settings:
Flying and looking (mostly horizontal) 65-72 fps..Judder
Now that I found strange when looking down on my body and 1/4-1/3 of the outside view was visible it droped to 38fps

I've noticed a drop in performance when looking down at the pilot body.

could be a really complex mesh.

Going by numerous posts your gonna need a beefy GPU to get the best out of the Rift, an ATI R9 280/290 or NVidia 780/790 are pretty much needed. crossfire/sli also recommended.

Had a go at the downsampling today but the Nvidia control panel tell me the Rift wont support the custom resolution when I set it to 2560x1440.

Any suggestions on what I might be doing wrong.

Like posted earlier I am having performance issues with my GTX770. So a R9 280x won't do unless Elite is having better performance with AMD cards.

http://www.trustedreviews.com/opinions/amd-radeon-r9-280x-vs-nvidia-geforce-gtx-770-which-is-fastest

I'm getting a higher mark with my GTX770 than the R9 280X

crossfire/sli recommended? where did you read that? I have been following fairly closely and last I heard SLI/CF were absolutely NOT recommended due to the increased lag they add into the mix, which is not visible on a screen but can ruin VR.
Maybe it has since been updated?

Hi,

can you point me to a software or configuration that would allow me to view the rift input on the monitor (in addition to sending it to rift)? Or just point me to a place where this has been discussed. I'm sure this can be done.

Thanks!

crossfire/sli recommended? where did you read that? I have been following fairly closely and last I heard SLI/CF were absolutely NOT recommended due to the increased lag they add into the mix, which is not visible on a screen but can ruin VR.
Maybe it has since been updated?

I agree , crossfire in this case does not help, i have an AMD HD 7970 and I can say that is fine for ED, maybe this is the minimum i would recommend right now for ED+DK2 , probably you can get some like I did second hand at very affordable prices from harcore gamers / bitcoin miners

I'm running two GeForce GTX 570's in SLI, and two weeks ago these replaced my previous SLI'd GTX 460's.

Running SLI 570 - or 460 - as opposed to to solo cards gave a FPS boost of around 60%. While there's room for optimisation, SLI does work happily! :)

Meanwhile, my DK2 arrived Friday and my rig just about runs ED via the Rift on low settings, with occassional FPS stutters.

The SLI'd 570's smash 1080P @ 60fps @ high settings on a normal screen, so I'm looking forward to Nvidia, OculusVR & Frontier working together to bring us performance boosts!
