ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Aw, thats not the answer I wanted to hear ;)

Thanks for the info though, interesting you are running an i5 and not having problems. I'll have to check out my motherboard and PSU ina bit more depth and make sure I could support something like a 780ti.

Personally I'd wait a bit before spending quite a bit of money on a 780ti. Afaik we don't really know which cards will support the announced VR enhancements like SLI. If that turns out to be only supported in the new 900 series then that would make those a better buy for someone with a rift. If they've said the enhancements will include the 780ti then ignore me.

I've always been a bit dubious about SLI and Crossfire. But if those manufacturers are talking directly to Oculus and if you are really into a game like Elite, where the manufacturer is clearly joining in as well, then it might be worth considering in this sort of decision.

I'm really disappointed about exactly that:eek: i hope they work on it behind the curtains..

Personally I'm not unhappy about that. If there was a perfect storm of new 900 series GPU arriving, Beta 2 with ASP explorer AND if the DK2 support was even better then I might be in trouble. I might forget to eat or something.

its funny you should say that. For the most part I get better performance in demos in extended mode over direct when both are supported.

Not sure what they have put together... Just asked him how the fix was coming along?

He just said it should be done for Beta 2 :)

On a side note, I'm stuck back in Saudi now with my Dk2 and a 780m powered laptop... Things were functioning but not at a solid 75 hz. Then I downloaded the new NVIDEA driver and adjusted the VR setting to 1... Things seem much smoother now with less latency. Maybe I'm imagining it, but I swear it looks and feels better! Man do I miss my desktop though!

I can think of worse places to be stuck in (so long as you are in a nice hotel ;) ) I will check out new drivers, thanks..... I have not updated in a month or so at least.

holy hell.... I bought a half price Cobra yesterday**

**I thought I had already posted this but maybe not

the feeling of size in the rift was blooming amazing. I got exactly the same feeling looking over to the passenger seat as I do in euro truck sim

so so cool.....

it did kill my framerate even more so compared to the sidewinder however.

Slackr I tried the new nvidia drivers with ED last night, Frame rate definitely seems a lot better in most stations. Only one I found where it noticeably struggles is wyrd.

Not that I've been to all 55 systems . . . :)

I will probably go with one gtx980 for now, and closely follow the development of VR Direct + DK2 + SLI in Elite. As of now there are too many unknown variables for me to justify diving in with a SLI setup :) - and I bet there will be quite a few posts on this forum as well as the different subreddits with people trying out the new stuff. There's always room for a second GPU later on.

The new Asus X99 + i7 5930K might help as well?

Hey SlackR - what is this VR setting in the new drivers? And it works for the old (ish) GPU in your laptop?

I haven't installed my 970 yet, but the setting appears below the vsync option in the 3D settings in nVidia control panel. It's labelled 'VR max prerendered frames'. Setting it to a higher value will usually give you a more solid framerate, but it will add latency to processing. So it's a balancing act, ideally you only want to use 1 frame for quickest response, but using higher numbers will give you a more consistent 75hz / fps.

Aha, thanks very much! I might upgrade my driver. I was holding off as people were reporting lower frame rates with newer drivers (I think I'm 2 versions behind)

I went from playing on low settings with SLI 670s to high settings with SLI 970s in Rift E: D

I'm quite happy with that.
