ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Is there any way to map control of the Galaxy and system map navigation and selection to the joystick controls? What are people generally doing with their set ups to use these maps?

Since the latest update the game stutters really badly for me, it looks like the game is loosing tracking and constantly flickers to the paler colouring and back. V4.00 seemed fine and I was impressed with how smooth the game play in stations was. V4.04 - completely unplayable for me, screen constantly juttering in stations and even space.

Anyone noticed this or have a work around?

Mine too. Stuttering not so much but, the random visual glitches yes.

My rift is setup to be the second screen (on the right) are you saying this is the reason for judder? I have my pc connected to my 60hrz tv led. I could get the pc and elite up and running then pull my hdmi lead out so no connection to tv or would turning it off just be as good? (I have tried turning it off but still judder) also what is aero is this only on windows 7?

My specs are z97-k asus. I5 4690k 3.9 turbo, r9 290 tri x oc, windows 8.1 SSD, 8 gig Ram and using catalyst 14.7.

Space and outposts are butter smooth but stations close by have slight judder and inside us just terrible. Asteroids are awful in training and solo/online. I could play in rocky asteroids all day long before the update. Having graphic settings on low or high does not make much difference. ( judder is worse)

Sorry for the questions but this post could help people out :)

Thanks Rob! I ran MSI Afterburner with my setup and one of my cards was not being used at all. SLI does not seem to be implemented (as standard) in Beta 2 after all.

Some googling led me to forcing AFR 2 in Nvidia Inspector and seeing if that worked. It doesn't seem to play nicely with the rift and one card was still not being used, overall performance was worse.

Still, Rob, your settings seem pretty nice for a single 970. Do you really get no judder even in stations? I'm going to give them a shot now. So far I was just switching between the chunky presets... (Maybe I'll try disabling SLI altogether as well...) EDIT - Just tried your settings, also disabled SLI altogether but it had no effect. No way I can run your settings on a single 970 judder free on a station landing pad. Out in space it's a different story ofc. Maybe its my CPU or something else...

If Aldric (or anyone) can let me know how they got SLI working with the DK2, I'd be most appreciative!

Not sure if you have tried this, i copied and pasted from the Elite forum :Hello, Commanders.

We're hard at work getting the Beta as stable as possible. Thanks to your continued bug reports and posts we are already looking into and resolving several issues.

We've decided to include a setup guide for running Elite: Dangerous with SLI. Please follow the steps below:

1.- Open nVidia Control Panel
2.- Go to “3D Settings” > “Configure SLI, Surround, PhysX”
3.- Make sure the option “Maximise 3D performance” is selected (“SLI Enabled” should appear below the panel “SLI Configuration”)
4.- Go to “3D Settings” > “Manage 3D Settings”
5.- There are two options now:

· The quickest way is to enable SLI for ED is to go to the “Global Settings” tab, then find the feature “SLI rendering mode” and make sure its value is “Force alternate frame rendering 2”. This SLI mode will then be enforced for more programs than only ED, so in some cases the next option would be more suitable.

· If changing a global setting isn’t viable or a more fine-grained alternative is preferred, go to “Program Settings”. Find ED in the dropdown list (under a program to customise). If ED isn’t listed, then press the “Add” button and select the executable in the dialog. Once ED is selected, then find the feature “SLI rendering mode” and make sure its value is set to “Force alternate frame rendering 2” (by default it will get the value from the corresponding global setting).

There you have it. Once you have ensured you have SLI fully and correctly enabled be sure to let us know of any issues you find via the Orerve Support Ticket System.

In my case i opted to do this : If changing a global setting isn’t viable or a more fine-grained alternative is preferred, go to “Program Settings”. I think you have to choose the (EliteDangerous32.exe) and NOT the (EliteDangerous launcher) when you get the "Dropdown list)

With reference to stuttering in stations etc, i get this sometimes too, but i think that could be more to do with the server rather than my cards/sli.

My CPU is an i5 4690K currently not overclocked running at 3.5GHZ @idle and 3.9GHZ @load, it is on a custom watercooling loop but since buying the CPU i havent needed to Overclock it at all.

Windows Aero is the graphic shiny stuff on your OS, but as said here before its not needed to turn off, i just tested it ;-)

Just be sure to turn BLUR off in the graphic settings.

I did not overclock my CPU or GPU but my preformance is almost constant 75fps, besides the aestroid belts.

I read somewere you could change the stereomode in the graphics XML file in the user/appdata frontier and then grapics folder to 4 instead of 3, but mine was already 4, and i guess yours is too, just check it.

i5 4690
Asus sabertooth mkii
Corsair 8GB Ram
SSD
2xR9 290 (in elite i disabled Crossfire)

Cheers

First to control the galaxy map, you can edit everything from the OPTIONS/CONTROL page, they are all at the bottom.Plus you can use e key(so also VA) to call the galaxy map without the need of looking left.

For Navigation:
Left Joystick: X & Y axis for moving the cursor to the systems, two top buttons for zoom in / out, hat switch for the galaxy levels up/down.
Right Joystick: X & Y axis for Yaw and Pitch(not using roll), two top buttons for selecting the folders in the menu, Hat switch for menu navigation, one button for selection.

But this is my personal setup, Is better you just keep trying different setting by updating the OPTION/CONTROL page until you find yourself comfortable;)

Juniper just opened a thread about it here - didn't post my detailed config, as I think it's rather pointless to just copy it and it's still WIP.

Hi folks. Just registered an account after lurking here for months because I wanted to share how I got rid of all my stuttering and "white-out (when screen turns light due to loss of position tracking)" issues.

This won't necessarily work for everyone especially those with dated hardware. I'm running a 4790k with a 780ti and could not stand how badly the game performed in the rift. Tried all the suggestions here to no avail but then remembered a trick I used way back to get battlefield 4 running smoothly.

What's the trick? Adjusting the system core parking settings. I'm not expert on this but it has to do with how the OS handles the availability of the cores. Long story short, the utility provided in the link below will allow you to set the cores to never be parked.

I tested this by turning it on and off and have confirmed that this will resolve the stuttering. I'm running at max settings with blur and AA turned ON and shadows on best quality and there is almost zero stutter except inside stations where it happens sporadically. Could not believe this old trick would make such a huge difference.

I have no idea what the long term consequences are by setting the cores at 100% availability so proceed at your own risk. I'm finally enjoying the hell out of E:D and hope you guys get the most out of it also with this method.

Good luck!

Oh here's the link to the utility: http://coderbag.com/programming-c/cpu-core-parking-manager

I tested this and it solved the gamma flashes (when screen turns light due to loss of position tracking) completely for me. However, it looks like low persistence is gone and there's more judder.

It suggest that the loss of positional tracking is somehow CPU related. Like there are CPU spikes with interfere with the tracking. I never had any problems in version 1.6.x.

It's also possible to stop CPU parking through a Windows Power Scheme. I made a Power Scheme specifically for Elite Dangerous. Your run the following commands:

set ElitePowerScheme=A1234567-1234-1234-1234-F00000111AAA
powercfg -DUPLICATESCHEME SCHEME_MAX %ElitePowerScheme%
powercfg -CHANGENAME %ElitePowerScheme% "Elite Dangerous Power Scheme"
powercfg -SETACVALUEINDEX %ElitePowerScheme% sub_processor 0cc5b647-c1df-4637-891a-dec35c318583 100
powercfg -SETACTIVE %ElitePowerScheme%

This create a new Elite Dangerous Power Scheme with core parking disabled.

Also on Android device is possible, but making everything unstable.
After searching you also find this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulm-PeZxi0Y
And I ask myself, why should i do this?

You should be not having any issue with your RIG, is it not that you might be having some internal issues?
I know that in some places in space you can get in to the Gamma tracking issue, but that is a Game issue, because in other places it does't happen.

here you have to choose: Parking enabled, No Gamma-flash with judder due to low fps and system uselessly at 100%.
Parking Disabled, Gamma-flash in some points, no judder and decent fps and system regulating how it should be.

I noticed that if you have a strong source of light behind you pointing to the camera it cna couse the gamma flash. I have a veranda behind me and in sunny days it happens that it also flashes, but at night not problems always if you don't go in certain places in the space system.

Hi PIM1, my setup is very similar to yours except that I have an r9 280X. I've found everywhere runs fairly smooth mostly with the graphics dialed down all the way as far as it can go (graphics end up looking terrible but the experience is still awesome). This leads me to believe that the performance would be better with a better graphics card (and maybe an i7 with parked cores?) and isn't related to the "monitor" the rift is attached to or anything like that.

If you experiment and find a way to get good performance with medium or higher graphics settings let me know and I'll do the same.

Thanks.

Cheers amenconi. Been on again for a couple of hours but my performance seems to be getting worse. I managed to get fraps running and it showed i was getting 60-65 around stations or the orbital spaceports with huge planet in background. Very dissapointed with what i get on low settings. I even had the rift slider down 2-3 rungs down.

Vr has really messed me up as i cant play regular games anymore just doesnt feel anygood and all the playtime i get is just fiddling about. Tired so off to bed :-( will let u know if things improve.

What fps you getting and what graphic settings ? ( i took lens off and from time to time it showed fraps fps counter)

Hi

I am playing ED on the OR/DK2 since several weeks - and this game is truly made for VR. I dont know if this was already mentioned, but what we need for an even better integration is an free drag-and-drop-solution of some UI-windows, especially the Coms-UI and the UI of the galaxymap - it should be possible to drag them into the middle of the screen, to make them bigger or smaller, like on an smartphone, for better reading. All the informations of the systems in the galaxymap are for example shown far to the left. Also it would be great to freely move the station-boards, to get the informations of the Galnet in the middle of the field of fiew. By the way, later it would be great, if an anchorwoman would represent the news, like on tv.

Furthermore it would be great to have an virtual keyboard for writing messages to other players, by klicking the alphabet with the mouse. So there would be no need anymore to leave the OR. My question: Are there any plans into that direction?
Thanks!

Just wanna say this made a huge difference for me as well!
R9-280X and i5 4570
Interesting, I thought I read in a few places that parking cores was only relevent for i7s.

I'll have to give it a shot on my i5 then, thanks.

Edit: It does seem to have helped, after setting it to 95% I then tried upping the graphics settings some and I still get no judder.
