ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

I've ordered 2 970s, the Strix ones from Asus - My DK2 arrives imminently.

What I want to know, is there a guide to setting up this with dk2, the SLI etc?
Does the 970s in sli make any difference to the rift from a single (my current) 780 card?

I'm scared that when it turns up I'm going to have hours of fumbling around with wrong settings or something. A decent explanation of what the difference is and indeed a guide for quick set up would be awesome :)

Well seems like luck if it works well or not! I was off line for quiet a while because of SSE4.1. Works like a dream now.

Its might be interesting for you to try the 780 first allow a little time for the shock and jubilation. Full system backup. Then one 970 card. Backup. Then SLI.?

Let me get this right - the screen res is 1920x1080 right? Because that's what AMD CCC reports as the display device, at 120Hz. But my desktop settings, and the reported resolution in-game, are 948x1080 - and the 2nd display comes our in portrait mode (so the screen displays as if it's rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise). Tried other orientations but they don't display right in-game.

Am I running this right or am I only getting half-resolution?

Its fixed in the setup of the game at 1920x1080 75hz (extended mode). What version of CCC are you using. I think your oversample maybe to blame.
If you like I can go into my graphics/app but that gives very strange settings but I assure you mine is OKish.

Did you get the IPD to work yet?

BOOM! Sorted it! Ah TFFT, I *thought* it was looking rather lacklustre!!!!

Got it up to the right res now - looks like windows had duplicated it with my 2nd screen (I have 3 monitors, but one is driven from my HDMI port so I had to disconnect that to connect the OR).... I suspect it had picked up some old HDMI settings or something, and had basically replicated the lower config onto both screens - so I was only getting half the res.

Killed all the other screens to avoid any confusion and we're now up to proper resolution.

THAT'S better. Yes, I can read the text now! Phew!

(Getting a bit of blur/jitter on the far-away asteroids in the training mission though - maybe graphics card isn't up to it, I dunno :( R9 280X though, would have hoped it was....)

edit: Yes, sorted IPD, the mouse range fixed itself at the same time.

Glad that's sorted.
I've just upgraded to 7970 for the rift! (same card) I believe the asteroids will be a killer for most lowerish end cards.
Anyhow enjoy. :D

Downloading now. Wanted a good horror game in the rift and this seems perfect. Not sure how long I will be able to cope though!!!
Brace yourself... I managed to play about 20 minutes with the rift, then I had to stop, it's REALLY intense.

I SO wish Dead Space had rift integration now...

Mine is scheduled to arrive on Monday, July 24th order here. I'm very much looking forward to play the game in a different way, especially the sense of scale should be impressive.

PS: I will never ever play a horror game in the rift, I can't even play them on a monitor. :D

I can relate. ;)

Funny thing, though: AI has the same performance with and without the rift for me using the same settings and even higher resolution... I was expecting to have performance loss (as I have with ED), but there was none.

can you save at any point or is it checkpointed?

srry i know its ot for this thread but i am hovering over the buy button.

Checkpointed, but there are quite a few of those around... yea, the game is pretty old school in some regards, and can be hard/unfair at times, but it's still quite the experience, especially for an Alien/scifie/horror fan... creeping along the corridors of the station, jumping at every sound from the air-ducts, all the good stuff. ;)

Same here but had to stop due to the onset of motion sickness. It will get better over time though. I get no motion sickness with cockpit based games but FPS just feels odd.

Hey folks - saw a few more posts of people buying 2xGTX 970s.. just curious if anyone has run GTX 970 in SLI, run DSR/super sampling, and gotten it to work? If I try a rez above 1920x1080 elite gets very unstable quickly..

Thanks :)

yeah, it looks superb!.

am a bit miffed at the content which has clearly been held back so they can do a season pass however...... this is one of the reasons why i initially held off, thinking i would wait for a complete version. DLC after 3 weeks is a joke!.

if I did crumble and buy the game along with the season pass, does the nostromo dlc come with it? thanks

Dunno, I preordered the Nostromo edition and I got the "Crew Expandable" and "Last Survivor" DLCs right now... are they worth it? Well, they are for me (playing the old crew and seeing the ship first hand is great). I agree though, they"season pass" stupidity got out of hand lately... es far as further DLC goes, I actually hope for some Alien³ scenarios... it's possible. ;)

Make sure you use the advanced settings in the DK2 config tool to set your IPD correctly, it makes a difference.

Helped me a bit.

eeermmm yyerr .. I fiddled in here to, not sure what I,m doing.

1. in E D I set the rift quality slider to far right, that helped a lot.
2 cut the bloom.
3 played with the Anti A settings, again not sure which setting is best.BUT completely OFF is NOT good.( like playing with 486 graphics.)
4 turned off blur
??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
In the rift advanced setting. I tried the slider 'thingy' fully left and right, Did not 'seem' to do anything?

I used this YOU TUBE VIDEO to set up .

I can play, nice and smoothy, if I squint ....still everything is blurry ????

I won't write anymore as do not want to hijack this thread. However, been playing it for about two hours tonight. Been creeping about and really taking my time. Not even seen the alien yet. I am very impressed. If you like the movie and want a change from ED for a while then its a no brainer. It is very intense and incredibly atmospheric. Second only to ED as far as games for the rift as far as I am concerned.

The slider in the rift "advanced setting" has to match the setting of the eye relief setting on the physical HMD. You can change that with the dials on the side of the DK2 using a coin or screwdriver.

First set the eye relief all the way out to measure your IPD, then after the IPD is set you can tweak the eye relief but make sure the slider setting always matches it.

Hope that made sense.

I posted my experiences so far a little while back in the thread. Maybe you missed it so I'll re-post them here.

I finally got my 970 SLI running with the rift tonight! (And thanks to some advice from the awesome denizens of this thread)

It's just absolutely amazing. I'm running full everything with no judder anywhere. SLI is still not fully supported though (the main issue being you have to force AFR2 in the Nvidia Control Panel (and for some reason forcing via inspector didn't work for me).

Also, gas giants come out stripey which looks very weird and a bit crap. Other than that though the game scales remarkably well (I was having to run medium settings with rift quality down a few notches without SLI)

Checking MSI Afterburner on the main screen my cards weren't even being pushed to 50% so I might even try some supersampling! Basically I'm over the moon. SLI was a bit of pain for me to get working but the experience now is the best on Rift IMO.

I've now set up supersampling as well.

For rift users you really have to try it. I'm downsccaling from 2560x1440. The image quality is VASTLY improved.
It's like the difference from taking the Oculus Quality slider from 1/2 to full (or like adding another few notches to the slider)

I am managing to run it fine (max settings) out in space but it juddered in the station. Turning off AO smoothed it out in stations and I don't miss it much so I'll probably leave it off.

If you are running a DK2 then I would 100% recommend trying supersampling even if it means turning your other settings down quite a bit. Everything is sharper, feels more 'real' and the difference for text and menus is night and day.

I used the techniques outlined in this reddit thread:
http://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDanger...upersampling_the_rift_dk2_2560x1440_in_elite/

Since then I have tooled around a bit and got some advice from the forums. Turning Environment Detail down to low gets rid of the banding artifacts on the planets.

I can basically run everything full with AO and AA turned off supersampling at 2560x1440. I get a solid 75fps anywhere but stations... I do get judder in the stations and it's quite irritating. But even turning down the graphics options further doesn't seem to help much. The only way to get rid of it is to loose the supersampling. But the supersampling looks so good that it's hard to go back.

I'm holding out great hope that FD will implement proper SLI support in Beta 3.

But even more so looking forward to Nvidias VR Direct technology. That will render each eye on a specific GPU which means we'll basically be rendering 1280x1440 on each individual 970. Performance 'should' be screaming at that res even with everything turned up. Here's hoping they release it soon!

So, I've got a GTX 780 and I'm wondering if future versions of the game will have me running the rift smoother that it is, or if I simply need to update my card. I mean a 780 is great great great for everything EXCEPT ED in the Rift.

Update? or wait for tuning?

Wait. Additional optimizations will be achieved, prices for GPU's will drop soon are a couple good reasons to wait. Better to see what you'll need in the end than to guess now ;)
