ED Astrometrics: Maps and Visualizations

Is this new? I don't remember seeing a Starfleet command logo on the map, at least not so distinctly. Maybe I just missed it before. (EDIT: I actually had seen it many times before, and just had a brain-fart).

Here it is again, with the sector names:

I've never used this, how does it get my exploration data?
Is there a program to d-load?
The edsm site is, um, not very intuitive in this regards.
Thx.
*Edit*
Have to use EDD?

There are several ways to get EDSM data and/or your own exploration data. The easiest thing to do is just set up an account on EDSM and run EDDiscovery, and link them using an API key from your EDSM account.

If you want all of the EDSM data, there are nightly dumps, and APIs that can be used (and write your own programs to access these). The maps I've been sharing here come from my ED Astrometrics website. I wrote my own programs to pull the EDSM nightly dumps and generate those maps.

However, EDD also incorporates EDSM data, and you can view that in its 3D map, for instance.

Everyone here has probably already seen it, but I figured I'd mention that Obsidian Ant gave a small shout-out to ED Astrometrics, via mentioning CMDR Malibu's Fuel Rat logo project:

I use the hat map a lot for planning my exploration route. Current trip is taking a trip to core a little right of the main line to the core. The heat map is great, I also love how people try and draw pictures on it :p

Very cool!

Apologies if it's already been asked and answered elsewhere, but what are those circular artifacts scattered hither and yon?

Yeah, I wondered about those. Somebody has been doing some very methodical and focused bits of exploration, either that or they've been drawing tiny crop-circles.

So ... does anyone fancy flying back over the Fuel Rat logo route a few hundred times so it shows up a bit more prominently?

These?

Those are permit locked regions, where people have explored around the edges. Frontier added a bunch of those scattered around the galaxy for potential future content.

Sucks that console players don't have access to our travel log files. You'd think it wouldn't be that hard for FDev to create a Download option in game for us to export them via USB... =/

I made some tweaks to the Google Maps system. Mainly, I made a custom averaging algorithm so that the zoom-outs don't look like they're fading to black so much. The low-traffic areas remain visible at all zoom scales. Basically, I'm assigning weight-factors when averaging pixels, making black worth only about 1/4 as much as a pixel that has some other color.
