:D That's a very decent offer natte, and very generous of you. :) I'm an alpha myself, so it's not appropriate for me, but I'm sure there are many who would love to take you up on that offer, and things they want to check.

I have a very poor internet connection at the moment, so streaming video is out (I checked your link, and I think I picked up the idea), it will probably cause me grief in the MP, but I've sold myself it's because my ship is old and flaky, and so it's going to misbehave.

sorry, back on topic ish

As the game progresses through build stuff going to crop up, it's an open buy-in so there may be people with access issues etc.

a sticky of general principles or behaviours to adopt, ( sry if I missed them on forum), somewhere obvious... could save the mods a lot of work

I really hope people take you up on the offer natte, it will help get wider opinions in the mix. :)

Servers

Sorry if this has been addressed before or if this is the wrong forum section to ask this.

I was wondering how they would handle servers for online gameplay. A popular space trading game I am currently playing does everything on one server, which makes it unique, and in my opinion, this is a great trait. I really hate how some games are spread out over 50+ servers.

Has there been any info on this?

P.S. Single player version = bleh

There has already been threads about it. We know there will be a server to manage the galaxy, and for the interactions between the players, it will be P2P. But we do not have many details and many commanders here, would like to have a presentation of Frontier

The mulitplayer game is going to be based on "one" server. You do have the option of playing solo, but you won't see any of the other players or the "new stuff" that has been affected because of them.

Each instance is set to be handled by the players (computers) themselves, in essence whoever has the "best connection" will run the instance and when they leave, they hand it over to the next best etc. Each independent (player) server updates the main one as to what is going on and it all fits together with internety magic.

Your welcome too Kemo. Sorry for the late reply but my kitchen flooded! A naughty washing machine being the culprit. I think the Thargoids have been at it.

Anyways, that was what I had in mind when leaving the thread here in the general area. Now to your problem. Ashley is the person to drop a PM to as he looks after the permissions to the different forum sections. He was snowed under with emails and PMs over Christmas and New Years. So he had a bit of a back log to get through. He is getting there now however. Here is a link to his profile. Same advice applies to you bdh326 if you don't have access to the Alpha forum yet, send Ashley a PM. :)
Thank you for the information - I don't have access to the forum hence why I've posted here - joined the alpha (no upgrade) prior to Xmas.

EVE can only do what it does because it has point & click combat, time dilation, and a subscription to pay for hefty server infrastructure. That's not technically possible for a game where you have direct control of your ship and guns, so Frontier aren't even trying to emulate it. In fact, none of the upcoming space-shooters are going to, so EVE will retain its niche for now. By necessity, Elite will be heavily instanced.

However, if you're playing in the 'all' group, the instancing will be managed by a single server. You don't have to make sure you're on the same server as all your friends to meet up. It remains to be seen how well the instancing system works, especially for people with poor connections. It might be that people in the UK and Australia struggle to meet up, or have choppy gameplay when they do, because the latency will be so high.

We wait and see on that one, with multiplayer combat being released for alpha testing at the end of the month. I know there are people in spread across Europe, US, Australia and even the Middle East, so we should be able to test a few combinations.

Message sent to Ashley -many thanks for the info. I thought it was strange that there is hardly any discussion of the alpha in any of these posts - now I know why DOH!

It will be very interesting to see what happens as my DSL connection is not top of the range..lol

Yes I live out in the wilderness with sheep and farmers that say AYE LAD alot and wear mole skin trousers with big green farmers wellies ..lol

There will be one "meta server", which will get you world updates and will do a matchmaking with other players. After doing matchmaking, you will be landed in P2P dynamic instance, where you or other players will be 'elected' to calculate NPC movements.

So yeah, it will be one big universe for multiplayer.

Thanks very much for the link and info. I've been wondering why I couldn't get in. No access to the Alpha forums yet either. Sent a message so hopefully back up and running soon.

@Geraldine - You called a Thargoid repair man didn't you? There was a thread in a google group a while back discussing how their ships worked or something like that

> It requires a deal of great balance though, or else you'll get the effect of
}> something resembling an over-loaded washing machine. This is one of
}> my theorys on anti-gravity propulsion.

I suspect the Thargoid was looking to repair a ship and instead found an actual washing machine.

All I know is that when it goes into a fast spin cycle, the whole machine definitely displays anti-gravity tendencies as it tries to take off, shaking the kitchen to bits in the process. So, you might be onto something there: reversed engineered Thargoid tech!

Glad your up and running again Drogue. :)

Has anyone noticed that Yorkshire seems to be the location of quite a few members here? We need a poll on this it seems unproportionally large.

It's mainly Cattle 'round here and the lad's say "arrgh" a lot :),so am also hoping my overhead cable is up to the task in "all group" play

+1 For Yorkshire ;)

My understanding of EVE is that it does in fact instance parts of the game, albeit it is seamless as you still get the "local" etc. Each Station, moon, PVE mission etc is an instance, though anyone can join an instance (no limit).

I could be wrong but that was how it was explained to me years ago (when I played EVE).
