I had this problem yesterday. I wanted to trade in my viper back in for a hauler. The only way I could resolve it was to self destroy my viper and take the standard sidewinder, loosing about 50k cr in the process and build back up from there. This is a bug that needs urgent looking into because having to loose such a big amount of cash, not to mention the time accumilating it, to swap back to a lower class of ship via self-destruct is a big nono.

Yeah ticketed this in 2.03 and got the "we know about it" thing.
I found that I could trade up from a Viper to a Cobra no worries, but not down from a Viper to eagle/sidewinder/hauler.
Huge mistake as the Viper is so crap now WRT jump rage I was stuck in a small subset of systems grinding away on 2-3K missions to the same 5 or 6 stations before I could get a cobra and get back to the real systems!
